Thanks @Stoufer - that’s 2023, you said? So you needed 84.5% for a 9 and 72.5% for an 8.

DD needs an 8…

Newlease · 16/05/2024 12:10

AQA higher went good here as well!
tomorrow is going to be real test

DramaLlamaBangBang · 16/05/2024 12:11

DS is doing AQA! so I invigilate a completely different paper! I hope the AQA paper was OK. It's a bit weird if some boards are hard and others easy, but I suppose the grade boundaries would just shift.

MamOfTwo · 16/05/2024 12:14

Don't you think it is unfair that two students of similar ability could get two completely different grades depending on the exam board they have done? Eg hearing Edexcel Maths was hard today and AQA Maths was easy. Employers won't know that though - they will just see one has grade 9 and one has a grade 6 for example. Why are there so many exam boards for the same subject anyway?!

DramaLlamaBangBang · 16/05/2024 12:15

I'm stressed to the max today! Thank God for this thread 😅

I checked last year’s Edexcel maths grade boundaries for the higher paper - out of a total 240 marks (for three papers), you were able to drop / lose around 66 (? From memory) marks and still get an 8. So that’s approx 22 marks per paper that you can lose, and still come out with an 8. Or 2/3 of a paper you can get wrong (if you get everything else in all the other papers correct)!

I know we were looking at 60pc for a 7 here. But it sounds like they might have even lower grade boundaries this year ?

Waspie · 16/05/2024 12:18

Shinyandnew1 · 16/05/2024 11:21

Mine home now and said maths Edexcel was crap-found it really really hard, left loads of questions out and ran out of time!

DS is saying the same thing. He's in a right state - panicking and catastrophising. He's calmed down a little now. I sent him last year's grade boundaries, reminded him that there are two papers to go and told him to go and speak to his maths teacher. He's not taking maths at A Level and needs a 6 minimum for the sixth form he wants to go to.

MamOfTwo · 16/05/2024 12:18

@Countrylife2002 Ah, of course, the grade boundaries will be different for each board. Still find them difficult to get my head around. @DramaLlamaBangBang Knew money would be at the root of it!

StarShipControl · 16/05/2024 12:18

Don't they do 2 papers?

JessyCarr · 16/05/2024 12:19

Three papers.

Pharos · 16/05/2024 12:20

@StarShipControl Ds has 3 maths papers - today was non-calc, next two are calc.

StarShipControl · 16/05/2024 12:21

Oh! I thought it was only 2. A calculator one and a non calculator one. Have I got the wrong board? I'm at work so will need to check the timetable when I get back home.

Yes, 2023 grade boundaries, on the Edexcel website.

Mcvitieschoccybiscuit · 16/05/2024 12:25

OCR was horrific apparently. My DC is a mid achiever in maths and only needs a pass to go on to her A level course but a couple of her friends are 8/9ers and came out crying. I really feel for them it’s awful when it’s “your subject” and its floors you like that. Hopefully the other 2 papers will be a bit kinder on them.

I think the main boards all have three, one without calculator and two with. Both of the calculator ones are after half term.

The only one I know that has two papers is iGCSE, and both of those are calculator ones.

Pharos · 16/05/2024 12:28

@StarShipControl Ds is doing Edexcel Higher, next two are on June 3rd and 10th.

StarShipControl · 16/05/2024 12:30

Thanks. I think I just missed that there were two after half term!
I've been mainly focused on this week and next week. Argh. Good luck to them all.

steppemum · 16/05/2024 12:35

Can I join you please?
Dd is clever, at super selective grammar, but was diagnosed autistic in Dec, and this academic year has been a disaster.
We've pulled her out of French and Eng. Lit, so she has 7 left.
She has to have 5 passes to go to her sixth form college.
One has to be Eng Lang (that's the hardest one)
and she has to have decent grades in the A level choices.

So far - drama was good (that's a pass then, as her practical scores were decent)
Biology was a disaster
Computer Science yesterday was a disaster (that is an A level choice😖 )
Haven't heard from her about maths yet. That should be a grade 8, but needs to be a high pass because it is an A level choice. She was very pessimistic this morning. So that is not looking good.
Chemistry tomorrow, and that is also an A level, and should be agrade 8, but the way things are going, she will be lucky to pass anything.

She is on in school study every day, but does 0 revisions during the week in the evening and very little at weekends.

In the meantime I have turned grey and will need a holiday to recover form exam season.

I'm stressed to the max today! Thank God for this thread 😅

Bless you - I invigilate most years but I'm not this summer but I do think you soak up some of the students stress when you do it ... I wonder if that on top of worrying your youngster is maxing you out on the stress front?! Grin

> passes gin <

Wehaditsogood · 16/05/2024 12:46

@StarShipControl We also only have 2 maths papers.

RachelGreensHair · 16/05/2024 12:53

Haven't heard from DD as usual, she's also straight into RS exam. Her teacher and encouraged her to sit higher Maths as she's in top set although she was adamant she wanted to do foundation. Really hope she's OK and hasn't thrown her off her RS exam.

Thank you for this thread, my family say I talk too much about her exams so is nice to have this space!

GlomOfNit · 16/05/2024 13:10

Jeez, just had a look at Twitter and TSR. LOTS of angry/upset students out there about that H Edexcel Maths paper...

Really hoping this will mean good things for the boundaries.

To be fair im stressing myself out! I only did the invigilation because I have to do one and I thought I'd get some practice in ( and the invigilation training was 5 hours long, so I need to get my times worth!)
