For OCR it was Pride & Prejudice and Animal Farm this morning. Macbeth and poetry next week.

I am a bit confused why some of you have done Shakespeare today. My DD has done An inspector call and Dr Jekyll...
Macbeth is in paper 2.

Why?

Is it a different exam board? Aqa is Shakespeare and 19th century novel today and paper 2 modern texts and poetry. Your DD must be doing a different exam board

JessyCarr · 13/05/2024 15:55

@Thisisreallyweird that looks like it might be under OCR board.

Thisisreallyweird · 13/05/2024 16:02

Thanks everyone! All clear!yes, OCR.

Ok here goes.

Macbeth: How is lady macbeth presented as a strong character
Merchant OV: How is shylock presented as isolated character
Christmas Carol: How does dickens present scrooges lessons about life
Romeo & Juliet: How is Juliet's difficulties in life presented
Jekyll and Hyde: how does steveson create an atmosphere of fear and danger

Oh thank god for that. We were literally going over quotes detailing Lady Macbeth's character, her desire for power, her ruthless side and scenes that show she's not as tough as she presents last night.

Also went over quotes about Hyde and how Stevenson chooses to describe him, amoral, barbaric etc.

Can only hope she remembered them!

omnishambles · 13/05/2024 16:04

OK so the message home is that Macbeth was a gift and P&P was horrible.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 13/05/2024 16:06

@DramaLlamaBangBang thanks! You are right. Grin

DramaLlamaBangBang · 13/05/2024 16:07

Ds said he thinks it went pretty well and his timings were good, but he forgot to take his phone out of his blazer and got really stressed out, thinking he was going to be excluded, but thank God he put his hand up and got a teacher to take it off him! He's a bit of a one for not getting in trouble at school and would usually rather stick his head in the sand than risk being told off.

friskybivalves · 13/05/2024 16:07

We had vague messages that P&P was 'about marriage' Confused so really I am none the wiser. I mean how general can you get?

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 13/05/2024 16:09

Oh bless him it's so easily done though. Sometimes despite all their prep they have moments in that big hall where they just go full on Rabbit in Headlights

For my O level in 1982 I had to write about whether I thought the Bennet's marriage was successful plus one other marriage but I forget which.

Eek. That's really good her noticed and handed it in. My son is so absence minded I ban him from taking his into school. Someones child on here a few years abo got banned from all exams as it fell out his pocket.

Bellini12 · 13/05/2024 16:18

So on the face of it the AQA Lady Macbeth question sounds good. However my DD has said that she would have smashed it if it was a theme question and she ‘barely revised’ Lady M as that was on last year’s paper so didn’t think it would come up again. I think she’s going to learn the hard way that you must revise everything!
Then she didn’t manage to finish her Classics paper and said the questions weren’t plain sailing so altogether today hasn’t been a good day and she’s pretty down.
All we want is for her to reach her predicted grades and be happy with her efforts, but that’s why I hate exams as they are so hit and miss and not always a reflection on their abilities.

Gazelda · 13/05/2024 16:40

DH has told DD that it doesn't help to dwell on exams after she's sat them so he won't ask her how it went, with the expectation that I won't either.

On the one hand, I agree with his theory. However I'm itching to ask her about it, to gauge her feelings and stress levels. I can't help her in the exam, so I'd like to be able to be a listening ear before/after. I'd certainly appreciate a debrief after sitting an exam.

I'm at work so won't see her til later. I think i'll loiter around her bedroom in the hope she'll spill the beans!

English Lit AQA today.
French papers 1 and 3 tomorrow morning, Business paper 1 tomorrow afternoon.

Yes my son did gcses last year and I think it was how Lady Macbeths personality evolved through the play or something like that.

Please nobody let their children make the mistake my son did on one of his Eng Lit papers last year. It was the first time since covid last year they did unseen poetry. For some reason he flipped through paper thinking he had done everything and missed the 40 mark unseen poetry question 🫣🫣 which is a quarter of all the marks available for Eng Lit.
He did manage to get a 5 still which we couldn't believe as he thought he had blown it!!

gingercat02 · 13/05/2024 15:23

I'm at work, and there is no chance of any communication from DS, so I'm on tenterhooks until about 5pm

It was OK. I think that might the stock answer for the next 5 weeks 😠
I'm hoping Lady M will be OK as they have done a lot of essay plans on her. J&H I have no idea!

GU24Mum · 13/05/2024 17:00

Apparently English Lit was OK though the high-risk strategy of planning out one essay which he was sure would be the one did not quite work but apparently he used it anyway!

TinfoilTangerine · 13/05/2024 17:08

DS (AQA Macbeth and Jekyll and Hyde) thought Macbeth question was ok but not what he was hoping for - wanted a theme but didn't like Jekyll and Hyde. Think he was ok with the wider question but didn't think extract was helpful. He is usually good at English - 8/9, but feels will have to do lot better in paper 2 to get that. Focus now on history. Is an A Level choice and DS favourite subject so wants to do well.

MonkeyTennis34 · 13/05/2024 17:10

AQA for DD.
She thinks it went well, better for n Christmas Carol than Much Ado.

The Much Ado question was about deception.
DD said her teacher had predicted this but DD thought it would be about something else 🤦🏼‍♀️

felissamy · 13/05/2024 17:25

Macbeth was Ok, though not the theme he really wanted, as he wanted to talk about minor characters. J&H horrible. Didn't have enough to get teeth into and wished it had allowed him to think about character which is what he was really into. So a bit ho hum, after so much revision.

We are in the same position. DD1 loves English lit and always done well- predicted a 9 and was really confident going in. Hated both questions and extracts (Romeo and Juliet and Christmas Carol). Not like her to be negative but onwards and upwards, no time to dwell.

BestsellingWine · 13/05/2024 17:41

I love how many thought it was “ok” - Ds thought it was “alright”!

😵
He is to take it in because his bus pass is on it ( I'm dropping him off but can't collect) I'll make sure he remembers to put everything in his bag in the morning.

Stylinson · 13/05/2024 17:45

My daughter had R&J and J&H. Has been in tears about R&J. She showed me the passage and it’s a really tough one to get much quality discussion from! Seems so much harder than the R&J questions from the last few years.

j&H was ok. But she’s now torturing herself by thinking of other things she could have said.

Feel quite upset for her. She didn’t do that well in her mocks - due to a complete lack of work over the last year - but has really been putting the effort in. She was quite confident about this one.

it’s so relentless

DD goes in with phone for the journey and then hands it in at reception as she goes through - is that not possible?
