How long do you tutor your children for in preparation for the 11+ (grammar / private)? And how much work (hrs) outside of school have they done per week?
DS is in year 5 and we are considering grammar school application.
Many thanks

We did not start until end of May year 5, and dd had a tutor two hours once a week (coming from state school so she needed to cover some things not yet covered in school). She had 3 weeks off no studying during summer. She also did atom learning 3 times a week usually. Closer to the exam she did atom a littler more. But we also saw her mock scores on atom were good, so we knew she was doing the right amount for her.

SamPoodle123 · 19/01/2023 19:11

Thanks everyone, that makes sense. Although, perhaps no so nice for the ones that did not get offers where they want and probably want to talk to the school to find out why! Or if they are waitlisted to find out more! It will be a very stressful day! I assume they probably send in evening!? What time in the past do they normally sent?

Planet3 · 19/01/2023 19:13

When my DC did 11+ 2 years ago, offers were sent on the Friday morning before half term. All comms received by around lunchtime I think.

knopka · 19/01/2023 19:36

We have interview date from Emanuel (remote).
Does anyone know how much they can question a 9 year old? The interview form still asks to list ambitions which can be hard for a young child to answer.

Were Claremont interviews informal? How was the vibe?

I didn't get the name of my DS' interviewer but we was a senior and long-standing member of staff. DS was pretty happy afterwards but his interview did run quite a lot longer than expected and was a bit quirky. Not academic questions as he had elsewhere but another mum posted about answers to questions being probed more than elsewhere and that very much matched the feedback I had from my DS.

VickiMent · 19/01/2023 20:10

@BlueTick sorry just realised you already had interview, answered this thinking it was upcoming.

Daydreamscometrue · 19/01/2023 20:28

@QuiteAJourney thanks for continuing the thread! I was hoping that results would be emailed later in the day on the 10th. I can't face it until I've finished work!

Workhar · 19/01/2023 20:39

@QuiteAJourney thanks for the thread.

Was it Mr Stanley by any chance?

VickiMent · 19/01/2023 21:10

@knopka he thinks it might be Mr Stanley, but I can't 100% confirm.

Firenze12 · 19/01/2023 21:12

Those who have done this before what time do results emails usually come out?

Trickleg · 19/01/2023 21:16

I think Claremont results are earlier than the 9/10th - possibly the week before? Their offer day is 8th Feb

VickiMent · 19/01/2023 21:22

@Trickleg For Claremont

All candidates will receive an outcome letter via email and post during the week commencing 30 January 2023.

So yes the offer day is before most other results...

confu5ed · 19/01/2023 21:22

Two years ago, we definitely found out, for at least 3 schools, by post before email. The post was reliable and so we got the letters that Friday morning and then an email followed around lunchtime or later in the day.

Our experience is that emails are sent late, not long before 5pm but I am hoping the Saturday ones are sent earlier.

Our experience is also that schools communicate on the day they say they will but I have heard that some (Croydon boys schools in particular) communicate before the date and it dribs and drabs making it stressful if DCs hear about offers but are still waiting,

So I better check the post all day until it comes! lol

confu5ed · 19/01/2023 21:34

Just thought I'd check back on emails from a couple of years ago and KGS and G&L offered on the Friday before half term (emails in the morning). PHS and WHS came out the Friday a week before (that was a week earlier than we were expecting from PHS at least) and LEH was two days before them.

Daydreamscometrue · 19/01/2023 21:44

@confu5ed thanks for the information!

Firenze12 · 19/01/2023 21:47

Thanks @confu5ed trying to prepare myself!!

confu5ed · 19/01/2023 21:48

@Daydreamscometrue it was a covid year so things may have been different. But I’m not sure I can cope with them all in one day!

Mamabear12 · 19/01/2023 21:57

Yea, I’m hoping not all in one day either lol. Would be nice if one or two came earlier!

Daydreamscometrue · 19/01/2023 22:01

@confu5ed earlier would be good but I'm sure they'll be on the same day given the dates in the emails.

VickiMent · 19/01/2023 22:04

I think I would prefer them altogether, to get it over with, I am dreading that we get bad news early on and then the waiting will be difficult.

Thanks for continuing this @QuiteAJourney . This is a really useful series of threads. Will this be the one where our kids get hundreds of offers?

Thanks 😊
It may not be on this one... but on the following one for sure. The previous tread had almost 1000 posts in 10 days! Admittedly, we might post less as the rhythm of exams and interviews easies and eventually stops... but hopefully we will all continue to support each other during the wait.
