An opportunity for parents of DC applying to private and grammar schools in SW London for entry in year 7 in 2023 to share their journeys.

I'm usually on the Higher Ed board these days. Yesterday, Oxford offers were out - every year 24,000 apply and only 4,000 accepted. That means 20,000 very disappointed young people - year on year - all of which will have worked very hard to get the very top grades. Cambridge offers are in two weeks and it will be exactly the same.

I only mention this because applying somewhere like SPGS or many of the schools in this area, is basically the 11 year-old version of applying to Oxbridge! I think it's such a bubble in this area and it's easy to forget that these are some if the top schools in the entire U.K and unfortunately, year-on-year, the vast majority of very able DC will be disappointed at one or more schools. 1,400 for LU means 1,250 receiving a 'no.' If 900-1000 sit for SPGS or G&L, the reality is the vast majority (800 or so) cannot get offers. This is a brutal process and there nothing like it anywhere else in the U.K.

On SPGS... if they sat round 2, they were in the top half of the cohort that year - all of whom would have been one of the highest academic performers in their respective primaries (or they wouldn't have been applying at all). So they have done very well. You can tell them that they were in the top half and very, very well done.

If it's any consolation, this process does give them more of a certain type of resilience than most DC will have. When they come up against stiff competition later in life (and they will!) - eg. during the UCAS process - they are far less phased by it (unlike students who have never gone through competitive admissions processes / never experienced rejection and have been told they are 'top' etc, etc all through school).

Hang in there. They WILL get a place somewhere and even though this 11 plus process is hideously drawn out, they will have something to celebrate at the end. They can only go to one school snd that's all they need. All the schools are excellent. Always better to have tried and not quite succeeded, then to never have tried at all (god, I sound like my mother now)! But hopefully, you know what I mean.

Lots of common sense here - thank-you so much for sharing / taking the time to post!

I agree and also I believe that everything happens for a reason! Things work out in the end one way or another - we must all look for the positives in any situation, and support our DC!

@HawaiiWake I was about to say the same. Of all the schools we applied to, Emanuel was the one that really took time to find out what the kids were interested in, what their hobbies were etc. They have the academic results from the exams, but more than anything I think they are looking for children who are enthusiastic about other activities (whatever that is - football, drama, eco club, chess - I don’t think it matters), and who really want to come to Emanuel (they asked my DS what clubs at Emanuel he was most interested in - I think perhaps to find out if he’d spent the time looking at the school and actually wanted to come there). My experience since he started there is that they really do encourage the kids with their extra curricular activities.

For lots of people it is their first choice - we know pupils who turned down offers from LU, KCS and Hampton to go there. I can’t recommend the school enough. Good luck to those with interviews.

FriendlyMom · 11/01/2023 13:42

Good luck to everyone’s dd sitting FHSS today!

Daydreamscometrue · 11/01/2023 13:47

Thinking of those with a no from SPGS today. My DD was in the same boat several years ago and we were both disappointed. She's thriving where she is now and we couldn't be happier!

Daydreamscometrue · 11/01/2023 14:04

Still waiting for a our email from Whitgift. Anyone else?

Sunshineseeking123 · 11/01/2023 14:10

Some really wise words above, thank you!
We heard from Whitgift earlier today - we have an interview next week.

Good luck to all those waiting to hear from schools today, or doing interviews/next rounds.

QuiteAJourney · 11/01/2023 14:12

@Sunshineseeking123 congrats for the interview with Whittlgift!

@Daydreamscometrue we are waiting on Whitgift too, their email says the interviews will be between 13 and 25 Jan. If they want us to arrange time off work for both parents for our interview (😑) for next Monday onwards I hope they get their skates on!

Hope you won't mind if I ask, we received Whitgift 11+ this morning and the interview slots are on only for the 13th and 14th, but your available slots in the link provided in the email extend to next week?

Daydreamscometrue · 11/01/2023 14:19

@HeavensToBetsy1 yes it's the same for us with work schedules! Or a rejection. Has anyone had a no yet?

They included a Saturday in our slots. Hope same as yours.

Sunshineseeking123 · 11/01/2023 14:24

When I clicked on the link the only Whitgift interview dates available for us were next week. Nothing this week/this weekend.

HeavensToBetsy1 · 11/01/2023 14:26

@Daydreamscometrue just reminded myself of the wording of the email - "Interview invitations will start to be emailed in batches this week and will continue until 25 January"
So it might be we still have a chance.

Daydreamscometrue · 11/01/2023 14:33

@HeavensToBetsy1 fingers crossed!

Pigeon25 · 11/01/2023 14:49

I was a little suprised by the FHSS interview day today, seemed very casual. Anyway, DD came out happy so I guess that’s a good thing!

WNLastX · 11/01/2023 15:28

Anyone else's DS get an interview from Dulwich College?

We've just got our email, so pleased for him!

Sycamoreheli · 11/01/2023 15:38

Has anyone had a Hampton interview yet?

VickiMent · 11/01/2023 15:40

Do you mean for 11+? We had last week. I think they all happened on Friday and Saturday.

Sycamoreheli · 11/01/2023 15:57

How many did Hampton interview and was it general chit chat or academic?

I think there will be a lot of crossover between Hampton and the schools we have applied to.

They said the interviewed a third of candidates (which they said was 800+). It was two 15 min interviews with elements of English, Maths and Reasoning.
