Anyone up for a GCSE handholding thread?

DS2 has his GCSEs in June. He had mocks in November and more (why??) next month.
He needs to get 5 6s to stay at his current school (IB, not overly keen) or to transfer to another local 6th form.
He said he’s going to start revising this week......
Think his school will be helping him devise a revision timetable this week. I’ve bought him flashcards, he just needs to knuckle down now.......

Did anyone’s dc do AQA RS this morning? Dd said she ran out of time and had to leave 2 questions unanswered.

Ds did but he's in school between exams so I won't know anything until he's home

Good luck to everyone for this week. DD starts tomorrow with Biology. The state of her room is shocking. I periodically help her sort through it when I can’t stand it anymore but I have given up now as it only lasts for a day or two before going back to carnage. I just don’t understand how anyone has the headspace to work in such clutter and chaos. DP says I need to leave her to it as she has her own system. It’s not rubbish or clothes but piles of paper and books in no seeming order. Piles of sheet music too with music for different instruments and pieces/piano parts mixed together. I have resorted to leaving a recycling bag, a rubbish bag and a book bag pinned up outside her room and I will at least ask her to recycle/bin material as the subjects get ticked off and put any revision books her younger brother can make use of into the book bag.

Roll on June 16th.

megletthesecond · 15/05/2023 15:01

bend DS did but he's not home yet. He actually had an RE lesson this afternoon so they can revise for the next one. He sure isn't doing much at home.

TripleDaisySummer · 15/05/2023 15:06

DS room is a mess piles of paper and books for each subject it's partly him and partly way they seem to teach - all booklets and lots of loose paper and the revision stuff also seems very verbose.

He does some on-line but I do try and get him to work at the clear kitchen table downstairs. He'll have completed three subject by end of next two weeks so can pass book on to younger sibling immediately which should help clear some space.

Yes, yes, absolutely. The paper 😱. The structure of some of the revision material and the seeming lack of a system does my head in.

DuckyLuck · 15/05/2023 15:30

DS had RE this morning, Citizenship this afternoon and then stayed for additional revision after school - not seen him yet so no idea how he got on.

This is EXACTLY as DS2’s is.
I can’t stand it but will lay off until the end of exams.

He also starts tomorrow with Biology......

On Bbc Breakfast today they said that “allowances” will be made for this year’s cohort due to the pandemic. Didn’t say what exactly other than formulae being provided and no new vocab in MFL exams. Or is that it?

Ds said his RE paper was easier than his mock. Although for the question what do Christians do to celebrate Easter he said eat a roast dinner 🤔

He had a scare halfway through the exam when he had to start the second paper. Due to SN he uses a laptop and he was told to make a 2nd document and the laptop deleted everything he had done! Luckily the IT had everything backed up and it was saving all the time. Phew!

BonjourCrisette · 15/05/2023 16:01

DD's room was a tip until the other day when I forced her to clear up. Luckily she has taken to revising on a laptop as most of the school resources are online so the paper is minimal but the cups, plates, bowls, forks, clean clothes and dirty washing were doing my head in!

SilverGlitterBaubles · 15/05/2023 16:01

Well this is technically true 😂

Circleoffifths · 15/05/2023 16:03

I love the roast dinner response ❤️🥰

megletthesecond · 15/05/2023 16:07

DS answered "worship God". He decided answering "eat chocolate" would have been bad.
The poor examiners.....

Yep. It all seems so disorganised!!

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 15/05/2023 16:14

DD1 declared RS not too bad, although it was Islam for her class so no roast dinner dilemma Grin.

I'm off work today, so have cleaned her room. Normally that's her responsibility but I'm giving her an easy life now - she can pay me back in chores when the exams are over. Didn't touch the desk though as I wouldn't have a clue how to put the seemingly random bits of paper back in the right order.

We had 'eat a celebratory meal' and 'pray'. Covering all bases...

SilverGlitterBaubles · 15/05/2023 16:47

Agreed re the piles paper. They seem to have vast amounts of information sheets, worksheets, mini booklets, key word sheets and so many resources some of which I am sure has taken teachers a lot of work to put together. That's on top of all the online resources they have, it's almost overload. I am wondering if it would be more straightforward for them to have an actual textbook. Unless you are super organised it is impossible to keep up with it all.

filchards · 15/05/2023 17:01

My son's room, bag, head is such a mess too. Uses a laptop and most things are online but it's all so unclear and disordered. No text books which is my bugbear. I bought loads of revision guides and cards but he's barely opened them.

Had his first exam this afternoon - Italian. He dropped to Foundation level and he doesn't need it for anything so doesn't care. Which is a shame but it was quite good for the first exam to be something low stakes and in the afternoon so he had a leisurely start. Meant he had chance to be clear about where to go / where to leave his bag etc as school are hopeless at clarifying the practical details.

Biology tomorrow. Doesn't care about that either but I think he's done a bit of revision!

Exactly the same here. DS took AQA and ran out of time, not answering 2 questions. He said you basically have to do a mark a minute to do it in time.

My understanding is that examiners will be "slightly more lenient" with grade boundaries, space out papers from same subject more to allow additional time for revision, not test unfamilar vocabulary in MFL exams and also provide formulae in maths and physics

mumonthehill · 15/05/2023 17:22

Ds revising for biology tomorrow, he seems quite calm now they have started. Elder ds sat his last final at uni today, I actually feel quite emotional that we have got at least one through a degree!!!

Thanks @StandUpForYourRights hopefully they’ve done ok on the questions they did answer. Dd is doing Christianity and Judiasm, is it one paper on each does anyone know?
