Trinity/Whitgift 2021 entry

I have found the previous threads for Trinity/Whitgift entry really helpful, and I don’t think there is a 2021 yet. My son will be trying for 10+, and for a sports scholarship. He is bright, and pleased to be back training for his sports, but he gets really stressed in exam situations and works slowly. He is only trying Trinity this year because he is not at all sure he wants to leave his primary school, but if he managed to get a scholarship I think he might decide to go.

I was hoping the activity on the exam day might help motivate him, but we got the email saying it wouldn’t be happening because of Covid. Can I ask if anyone had more success at 11+ than 10+? Do they ever offer academic and sports scholarships? I am assuming that we will more have the issue of him getting stressed in the exam, and not passing, than standing a chance of a scholarship, but just thinking of best possible scenario Wink. Thanks!

@divebomber I was wondering about dulwich (we had planned to apply but didn’t at the last minute)... remember thinking the jan exam plan went against what many of the other schools were (sensibly, as we now know) planning. What a shitstorm eh. Good luck.

No clue how the online interviews will work... I mean, at one school, there was to be 20 mins x 2 with two sep subject teachers. Can they really do this on line?! Ug. Expect we will hear more this week...

We are waiting to hear about the 10+. I guess the in-person exam can't go ahead. I have no idea what they are going to do.

FYI, Trinity emailed announcing they will be in contact next week.. don’t call us well call you etc.

Onvacation · 05/01/2021 13:25

They also emailed about the 10+, saying exam still on Saturday. They are moving towards online, and will contact us on Thursday. They also said there would be changes to the interview and sports scholarship process. Feels a bit like pot-luck now. Not their fault, but such a shame. My son has already said he thinks he would have done much better had it been in school than he thinks he will be able to do at home.

The thing with the sports changes if for one school we have to send in videos.

Firstly - my child has been self isolating and all sport was cancelled.

Secondly - I know he will run quickly against someone but doubt he will go out just by himself.

So we are going to have to go to a wet field and video him.

This is after a 3 hour online exam.

Yes dulwich what a total nightmare.

stormyspring · 05/01/2021 23:14

I wonder what Whitgift will do re sports scholarships? Anyone know yet?

EnolanotAlone · 06/01/2021 06:26

@ohyestier5 Dulwich is in shambles, the boys must be devastated. No idea how they can create a comparable exam format fie half the boys.

Administration teams are still trying to figure this out, I wondered if they will hold off awarding sports scholarships til they can fully assess.. Which school has asked for a video?

@EnolanotAlone could you please share what is Dulwich's alternative plan?

@ohyestier5 hang in there, probably your DS will welcome the activity even after such a long session.

Sending positive vibes to you and all DCs, having to deal with all this changes on top of what is normally an already very stressful time.

EnolanotAlone · 06/01/2021 09:11

@2morasmum currently in a holding pattern with Dulwich I would expect a plan B sometime this week. The admissions team are incredibly lovely, but honestly, must be pulling their hair out.

Whitgift have started inviting for interviews. Has anyone been invited for an academic scholarship interview? Apparently this will be a more drawn out zoom interview...

Jumpalicious · 06/01/2021 09:17

Ps that “apparently” info comes from an email they sent today.

Jumpalicious · 06/01/2021 09:18

Sorry, I’m not being clear! This is what the email says. Quoting:

Academic Scholarships

Due to the current lockdown restrictions, we will not be holding an Academic Scholarship day this year. We will be offering an extended interview programme to those boys who are being considered for and Academic Scholarship, which we hope will be inspiring and motivating.

AveEldon · 06/01/2021 09:37

The previous scholarship day was also a sales exercise - showing the boys and parents how great the school was

Jumpalicious · 06/01/2021 10:00

@AveEldon that’s interesting! Who knows how it will work this year. I wonder what proportion of boys to places they are interviewing.

@ave Do you know: How long are (non scholarship) interviews normally? How many minutes per boy? Again, may all be different since zooming, I’m just trying to get a sense of things, so thank you for any help!

stormyspring · 06/01/2021 10:30

Yes Whitgift academic scholarships will be part of an extended interview.

Whitgift sorts assessments cancelled for in person. They will revert to looking at application and references.

Music and sport online.

I am ok with it, what can they do? At least they have communicated expectations.

Dulwich sounds like a nightmare.

Mummy195 · 06/01/2021 14:37

In previous years, parents who were applying at Whitgift / Trinity, were also applying to Hampton, KCS Wimbledon, SPJ, Dulwich, Emanuel and other schools. When my DC were applying at Trinity this was the format the interviews took - only this time it's Emanuel in lockdown. Bring your own item to discuss for a show and tell , as well as mental maths. So I thought it appropriate to post on here.

Mummy195 · 06/01/2021 14:43

I should add that the interviews were done after exam pass.

The questions were varied. Mostly it's about expanding on what they like, what they have been learning at current school etc.

Longingfornormality · 07/01/2021 14:56

Anyone have any idea what Dulwich might do?! I’m nervously waiting to hear but can’t take it much longer. Having had to make DS do work over Christmas I just can’t justify making him do any extra prep for an exam that might not take place... just hope we find out soon. Anyone have any inside info?

Onvacation · 07/01/2021 15:32

Can't help with Dulwich, but I'm with you on the waiting nervously. I'm waiting for Trinity 10+. They said on Tuesday we would hear by Thursday at the latest, with the exam still planned to go ahead on 9th. I can understand it is a total nightmare for them. Hoping they get in touch soon.

Longingfornormality · 07/01/2021 17:01

I hope they let us know soon! My concern is that they will invite us to something at very short notice with no time to psychologically prepare. Good luck!

Onvacation · 07/01/2021 17:14

We got the email. Only English and Maths. I feel stressed already because instructions are complicated and i just hope nothing goes wrong!

Of days to send out invites though!
