Trinity/Whitgift 2021 entry

I have found the previous threads for Trinity/Whitgift entry really helpful, and I don’t think there is a 2021 yet. My son will be trying for 10+, and for a sports scholarship. He is bright, and pleased to be back training for his sports, but he gets really stressed in exam situations and works slowly. He is only trying Trinity this year because he is not at all sure he wants to leave his primary school, but if he managed to get a scholarship I think he might decide to go.

I was hoping the activity on the exam day might help motivate him, but we got the email saying it wouldn’t be happening because of Covid. Can I ask if anyone had more success at 11+ than 10+? Do they ever offer academic and sports scholarships? I am assuming that we will more have the issue of him getting stressed in the exam, and not passing, than standing a chance of a scholarship, but just thinking of best possible scenario Wink. Thanks!

If anyone has received an email about a wait list would you mind posting here? We haven’t received anything so I can safely assume that’s not good news I think as the emails seem to have been sent earlier in the morning. But given our post seems to arrive quite late in the day I’m not sure my nerves can take this! If waitlist emails have already been received then I will just try and forget about it as that must mean we have no place at all.

SuiGeneris · 12/02/2021 09:06

@Zoomez congratulations! Similar thoughts here about the safety of Croydon, it is the only concern about both Trinity and Whitgift.

For the rest, we have been very fortunate and have offers from both. Other news today does not matter as much anymore!

Onvacation · 12/02/2021 09:08

@Longingfornormality I don’t want to give you false hope but we nevertheless received our interview email from Trinity. I called and they sent it again. It may be worth a call to them if you haven’t got an email.

Sorry! Not nevertheless!?!! just never!

Your email may have gotten lost is my point!

@Onvacation thanks - do you mean offer email or interview email? We’ve never had an issue with emails from Trinity before and honestly would rather get the bad news over email than over the phone so I think we have definitely not received an offer. But still holding out a tiny ray of hope for the wait list.

hopefulone1 · 12/02/2021 09:11

Is anyone still waiting for a email from w? 🤞

Onvacation · 12/02/2021 09:18

@Longingfornormality it was our interview email that didn’t arrive. We have had the other stuff since, although nothing on the portal since the info about the exam. I just wanted to say there is a possibility that something went funny with the emails - not least since they aren’t sending them to the primary email address (me) but rather are sending them to the secondary one (DH).

We got the waitlist letter. Better than nothing I guess!

Onvacation · 12/02/2021 09:35

@Longingfornormality glad it arrived, even if it wasn’t what you were hoping for. Fingers crossed.

Still waiting for whitgift email here too😬

notabirthday · 12/02/2021 09:44

We got a reserve list email - considering we only decided to apply at the last minute after some frantic number crunching and the only IESB prep DS did was the 5 day free trial with Atom that's not bad I suppose.

notabirthday · 12/02/2021 09:44

That's for Trinity btw, we didn't apply to Whitgift.

NamBo · 12/02/2021 09:47

We received an offer 😅

Good luck everyone and well done to those that got in.

hopefulone1 · 12/02/2021 09:49

Nambo - was that for t or w (congratulations)

CraigMurray12 · 12/02/2021 10:33

@Zoomez

We got yes email for whitgift.

Good luck everyone!

Well done! We got a yes too:) does anyone know what the governor’s bursary referred to on our letter means? It says he didn’t get one. Is this the same as the John whitgift bursary foundation bursary? A little bit confused. I will ring them next week to clarify but thought I’d ask here first as I’m sure they are getting lots of calls!
Joyofthree · 12/02/2021 10:40

It’s a no for T, not even a waiting list but yes for W. My son will be gutted! 😔

Zoomez · 12/02/2021 10:42

@SuiGeneris glad it is not just me!

We feel Whitgift is an incredible opportunity, every dealing with the school has been superb but yes the crime is a concern especially given recent events and throw a long journey into the mix then it just seems challenging. Anyone at Whitgift who can share any insight into personal safety?

I have also been at the receiving end of some unprovoked and nasty crime so that is really playing on our mind.

Also our son has done well with every school whether state grammars (where the journey would not be as arduous) or W and the other private.

Our son found the email because it popped up during a zoom and he is so happy!

Good luck everyone!

Been lurking on here for a while...does anyone know the range of academic scholarships usually available at Dulwich and Trinity? I remember seeing a list of lots of schools and their % ranges?

Mumof2SW12 · 12/02/2021 11:46

I am not going to pretend to have read all 17 pages of this group. But my DS is in year 8 at W. He takes the bus to and from school. Partly because we are a bit of a walk to the station (and the coach stop is mins away) so he likes the convenience and we bypass the safety concerns that others cite re Croydon (or phone muggings around Clapham junction and Wandsworth station). Having said that, many boys get the train and travel together. I understand that teachers also travel on the same routes in and that provides a further layer of safety. Hope that helps and happy to talk privately to anyone who needs more, if I can help.

Zoomez · 12/02/2021 12:08

Thanks so much Mumof2 does your son love the school? It just seems like it is too good to be true in some ways?

I may take you up on a chat once we get our head around everything here!

Florelai · 12/02/2021 12:14

PMd you @Zoomez

Seeline · 12/02/2021 12:26

I had a DD at T and now a DD. I can honestly say that safety isn't an issue for us. I assume people are referring to the recent stabbings - these aren't in the areas of either school. Croydon gets a bad name, but 'Croydon' is used to cover a wide area. Sometimes, things are mentioned as Croydon and it's not even in the right Borough!

Goingcrazy101 · 12/02/2021 13:11

Hello I also have an older DS at Trinity - the news from Croydon is always so scary but in all the time he’s been there (nearly 4 years) we’ve never had a single incident - the boys usually travel in groups of friends. The school takes all incidents (very few involving the boys) and their safety extremely seriously / they’ve had talks on keeping safe. Tbh the journey from East Croydon to the school is generally fine as the local bus is stuffed with Trinity boys. I hope that helps

Mumof2SW12 · 12/02/2021 13:42

Happy to be PMed. But yes @Zoomez DS is happy there. I really rate the head and the head of lower school pastoral care. Teachers have all seemed dedicated. With laptops online schooling worked and improved 2nd time round (showing they are receptive to feedback). And DS loves the sport and feels a sense of pride being part of the school.

AveEldon · 12/02/2021 13:45

I have an older DS at W and touch wood we have not had any issues re safety.
Wandsworth Common and other local areas closer to home have been more problematic.
However the long journey and the early starts in the dark mornings aren't great.
