Trinity/Whitgift 2021 entry

I have found the previous threads for Trinity/Whitgift entry really helpful, and I don’t think there is a 2021 yet. My son will be trying for 10+, and for a sports scholarship. He is bright, and pleased to be back training for his sports, but he gets really stressed in exam situations and works slowly. He is only trying Trinity this year because he is not at all sure he wants to leave his primary school, but if he managed to get a scholarship I think he might decide to go.

I was hoping the activity on the exam day might help motivate him, but we got the email saying it wouldn’t be happening because of Covid. Can I ask if anyone had more success at 11+ than 10+? Do they ever offer academic and sports scholarships? I am assuming that we will more have the issue of him getting stressed in the exam, and not passing, than standing a chance of a scholarship, but just thinking of best possible scenario Wink. Thanks!

Pleased that things went well for those of you whose DS interviewed today! Another hurdle over for this senior school race, I never thought it would be this stressful.

Hopefully we'll hear something this week about an interview but I'll start prepping him for questions now - he needs to remember all the things he used to do and enjoy before everything got closed down!

Croydon46 · 16/01/2021 17:15

I assume most of the interview chat is for 11plus.

Has anyone had 10plus interview with Whitgift yet?

nicolam77 · 16/01/2021 19:29

Just wanted to thank everyone for all the helpful and encouraging comments on here!

Out of interest, does anyone know how many boys sat the Whitgift 10+ this year?

JustJuice187 · 16/01/2021 20:06

@GrammarHopeful out of interest did your son sit Tiffin as well? Just wondering I’m intrigued that he didn’t get Wilson.

I won’t comment further on CATs - I know the subjects are the same - DS2 scored around 130s in early yr4 which is considered high - his ISEB scores were higher which I think as noted earlier is what Atom says about the score being different.

Reading this brings back so many memories.

My son is now year 8 at Trinity. Please be reassured re interviews that he was one of the first to hear for one school and one of the last for another and got offered scholarship at both.

He was put at ease at both schools for the interviews and the assessment days but I am aware it will feel very different on line.

All my sons friends even if they didn’t get their first choice school are very happy in the school they went too.

Good luck

GrammarHopeful · 16/01/2021 21:15

@JustJuice187, yes, he did, but didn't get past Stage 1. It was his first (same as for most others, I know), and he had a bad time (got stuck on Maths somewhere and didn't finish all problems—I am pretty sure that an automatic disqualification).

He passed Kent Test, but as he didn't get extra time, the results weren't very high (high 370s, pass rate is 332, but super-selectives we eyed need 400+).

SET he immediately thought went well, when I met him outisde the school doors, hence he qualified for Wallington Grammar and then through Stage 2 for Sutton Grammar. He missed Wilson's cut-off by less than 10 points (I am aware, once again, there are lots of boys who did).

We don't have CAT scores, as he is in a primary who doesn't do them. I do have two sets of IQ tests from different years (when he was six and then at 10 yo), and the both place him in the 95-6th percentile for composite IQ (high 120s). His Atom ISEB pre-tests scores (with practice for a month) were high 120s for English, ~130 on VR/NVR and 136-142 (max) for Maths.

I just wondered if anyone knew when we would be expected to hear about music scholarships for trinity and whitgift? For whitgift we had to do a recording which we submitted last year and we only just had our interviews so I’m probably being neurotics Feeling a bit nervous! Do you get a no thanks straight away if you didn’t really wow at the interview or do they let you have a go at showing off your instrument/s first before issuing either a rejection or a place? I would be so gutted if my son didn’t get a chance to sing/play for them!

hopefulone1 · 17/01/2021 09:32

I have not heard anything with regards to music from both trinity and whitgift - hopefully we find out next week either way

CraigMurray12 · 17/01/2021 10:17

I hope so! Fingers crossed for us all

1980sMum · 17/01/2021 11:56

@JustJuice187 Interesting. May I ask how you managed to get the ISEB scores?

Resmi · 17/01/2021 15:06

Hi , is anyone still waiting to hear from Whitgift regarding invitation letter for interview? This is year 7 2021 entry . If you haven’t got that , have you received no interview letter .

EnolanotAlone · 17/01/2021 15:07

Does anyone have any idea how T sports scholarships will work, the email sounds vague ? One way Zoom link with tests?

Jumpalicious · 17/01/2021 15:23

@Resmi worth noting that in the past W only send out no emails right at the end of the month, and they keep inviting to interviews throughout the month too. Of course, it might all be different this year...

Jumpalicious · 17/01/2021 15:24

I mean they only send out “No” emails at end of month (just to be clear!)

SoupDragon · 17/01/2021 15:25

Reading this brings back so many memories.

Me too :) my second (and last!) Trinity Boy is now in his second year at Uni.

I remember these days well!

Resmi · 17/01/2021 15:28

@Jumpalicious I have contacted W admission team on Friday and they said they will let me know by end of next week . So it won’t be good news isn’t it ? As they send no emails by end of the month .

GinT · 17/01/2021 16:25

Hi, I am new to this forum. Yes my son had his interview for Whitgift 10+ yesterday morning. We also applied for music scholarship, but haven't received any online audition invite yet.

Onvacation · 17/01/2021 16:34

One of our issues is that we haven’t actually managed to do a tour of Trinity. We had hoped that the exam day, and then hopefully interview day and sports scholarship day would give some more direct experience. I wonder if they will be able to give in-person tours before they expect people to accept offers? (May as well dream about getting offered a place this weekend since by Monday all hope may be dashed!)

@GrammarHopeful thanks for answering my very nosey question. My DS was the opposite- did much better at Tiffin (go figure!) - although he found Stage 2 hard whereas some of his friends came out skipping saying it was easy.

@1980sMum - I asked for CAT scores - data protection and all that you are entitled to all your kids records

@Onvacation - yes that must be annoying not to be able to see the school - the only tour does give a good flavour although I don’t personally see why they couldn’t arrange small tours - subject to suitable safety stuff being in place

Sorry to those who still haven’t heard from W - must be so frustrating

Onvacation · 17/01/2021 17:01

@JustJuice187 the online tour looked great but I missed being able to talk to the boys and the teachers. We did get that online too but it isn’t the same as walking round. Although, saying that, for my daughter we didn’t go for the school we liked best on open day. Although partly because it was further away.

Just received an email in regards to Whitgift music scholarship, saying that all applications are still being reviewed, and if considered the audition will start from 25th Jan.

Daydreamer85 · 17/01/2021 19:01

Thank you to everyone who has been posting, it has really helped being kept in the loop of events. So sorry for those who did not get an interview at either T or W or who are still waiting to hear, it is such a difficult year for all our DS's.
Could I possibly ask, without offending anyone, has anyone heard back about academic scholarships from either school ? These schools just are not accessible without the added scholarship.
I fully appreciate that many may not want to divulge this on the main chat page, but feel to DM me please with any info or insights.
Again I really hope everyones DS gets a place where they will be happy.

Jumpalicious · 17/01/2021 19:44

@resmi two weeks left in jan, so the fact that they will be in touch end of next week means still time for possible good news. However everything is different this year, compared to previous years, perhaps also the way they organise interviews! What other schools is your son considering? Are there other options you like if W doesn’t come through?

Resmi · 17/01/2021 19:47

@Jumpalicious My Ds is qualified for Wallington boys . We were hoping for either Trinity or Whitgift. But unfortunately it is not good news from Trinity. We don’t have much options at the moment .

Jumpalicious · 17/01/2021 19:51

@resmi - WB is supposed to be an excellent school. Good luck with Whitgift!!
