GCSE Summer 2020 Thread 7 : Carry on Corona Cohort, Cruising or Crawling to The Final Countdown

OrangeCinnamon1 · 11/08/2020 17:50

Welcome all to the 7th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort ...or the Corona Cohort as has been termed by @FoolsAssassin.

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in 2010, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay in secondary so any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find.

From now on our DS/DD may go down various paths so we decided not to be exclusionary and stay right here in Secondary Grin

The A level and oxbridge threads are very informative - DS is my first one and I am much better informed having had a look! Our GCSE crowd will be writing personal statements and choosing where to apply this time next year!

stoneysongs · 12/08/2020 21:29

Just been talking to a family member who is a head of humanities and he said that their A level results are similar to a normal year on average "but with some individual howlers" Shock
He reckons he'll be on the phone to universities for most of the day and is hoping they will be able to see through the nonsense.

FoolsAssassin · 12/08/2020 21:29

Good luck to all those waiting for A level results, DD went to Uni in a roundabout way so didn’t have it with her but supported a friend’s dC through it where it went wrong and they ended up in clearing. It was all a bit tricky for a bit but got where wanted and just graduated with a first and starting work at Microsoft soon so all came good.

Piggywaspushed · 12/08/2020 21:30

That's terrifying!!

Shimy · 12/08/2020 21:30

Rubbing “Ali G nicely”, might not be such a bad idea as it stands @sandybayley Wink.

Piggywaspushed · 12/08/2020 21:30

Sorry, that was a reply to singing!

stoneysongs · 12/08/2020 21:36

I know Piggy Confused
It did remind me though that there will be so many teachers doing that, fighting for the futures of these children. (Including you??)
Teachers must be even more invested this year than they are normally and determined to straighten things out.

I have really gone down the results rabbit hole today - luckily working tomorrow so might stop thinking about it for a change!

Piggywaspushed · 12/08/2020 21:58

I think we do feel even more invested, yes!

With my subject I feel a bit despondent that no matter what system, Gav and co invent , coursework is overlooked - and my CAGs properly reflected the NEA .

Northumberlandlass · 12/08/2020 22:03

I’ll be thinking of all DC, parents & teachers waiting for results tomorrow!

RoiseCap · 12/08/2020 22:13

Good luck to anyone with A levels!

I’ve got a very nervous DD1 awaiting A level results and she desperately wants A*AA minimum...

EwwSprouts · 12/08/2020 22:13

Hopping on the roller coaster.

mummabear74 · 12/08/2020 22:16

Just caught up with the thread from last night - so much to take in!

I'm definitely going to be joining the night watch this time next week. DD goes in for results but was allocated the last time slot at 10am so we will no doubt have a good idea of what to expect by the time she goes in.

Good luck for those with A level results tomorrow.

Janie74 · 12/08/2020 22:16

Good luck to all awaiting A-level results in the morning! Keeping everything crossed for the right results for you all.

mummabear74 · 12/08/2020 22:19

@singingstones thanks for those links. DD is our first too and I'm feeling totally out of my depth. I've learnt so much from this thread whilst dipping in and out over the last year.

stoneysongs · 12/08/2020 22:36

Good luck to the teachers on here who are in tomorrow with the Y13s 🤞

HPFA · 12/08/2020 23:41

Don't assume there won't be further changes:

desertcoffeeyoga · 13/08/2020 03:28

Good Luck everyone! Really hope these A level students get some respite after all this chaos . Will be us this time next week .. and then we can all breath out ..

Northumberlandlass · 13/08/2020 06:08

Cherryonthetop2019 · 13/08/2020 06:29

Knew it was too good to be true!!

Piggywaspushed · 13/08/2020 06:37

Well, no... that just says the appeal has to be done through the school, which is what they have always said - it's just some people didn't pick up on that.

My bigger concern is that it is being called an 'appeal' but the give have said the mock is the lowest they can get so I guess the appeal has to be waved through if the mock is higher.

Still lots of questions though! Especially given my understanding is these appeals aren't free and 'valid' mocks is as yet undefined.

FoolsAssassin · 13/08/2020 06:44

We are extremely lucky compared to the A Level people as at least by next Thursday there hopefully will be a little clarity ( or it will have changed again).

Piggywaspushed · 13/08/2020 06:54

Indeed!

My DS has been optimistic all along and thinks he is one of the 'winners' by just being awarded grades he didn't have to do any exams in. He ahs high trust in his teachers and his school.

I do hope his optimism doesn't come crashing round his ears next week!

FoolsAssassin · 13/08/2020 07:01

I have a fair amount of trust in teachers and school, it’s the algorithm that concerns me greatly and the Government response. Really hope your DS’s optimism stays intact.

Cherryonthetop2019 · 13/08/2020 07:06

OFQUAL have also warned that an appeal might affect the whole schools cohort. They haven’t expanded in how but it’s worded as a warning. The whole mock thing is a red herring. I was feeling somewhat relieved having seen it but now not so much.

Piggywaspushed · 13/08/2020 07:14

That'll be to do with rank order. I did hear someone say that yesterday.
