GCSE Summer 2020 Thread 7 : Carry on Corona Cohort, Cruising or Crawling to The Final Countdown

OrangeCinnamon1 · 11/08/2020 17:50

Welcome all to the 7th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort ...or the Corona Cohort as has been termed by @FoolsAssassin.

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in 2010, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay in secondary so any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find.

From now on our DS/DD may go down various paths so we decided not to be exclusionary and stay right here in Secondary Grin

Is that 47% of that head’s school, cherry?
If Scotland is anything to go by, that may not be indicative of downgrades across the board.

Cherryonthetop2019 · 12/08/2020 18:26

47% of all their grades. She said it was
mostly at the top end but a downgrade of 3 x As to to 3 x B’s is enormous. That would possibly be a total of 6 grades drop to one student. It’s worrying. It might be why they have come out with this Mock stuff so late in the day?

neutralintelligence · 12/08/2020 18:53

47% is really bad. I hope the schools have lots of support available next Thursday for the GCSEs.
A statistical model has been applied to real living 16-year olds. it is totally irresponsible and unfair. They didn't sit the exams so the normal moderation of exam results cannot be applied to predicted grades in the same way. It is just another thing that needs to be approached differently in a pandemic.

neutralintelligence · 12/08/2020 18:56

Also is there any word on how appeals will even take place?
I feel so sorry for the A'level pupils tomorrow and really hope that there is good news for them before they open their results about how to fix any disastrous unexpected downgrades.
Taking away 2 marks at the top end is going to be devastating to a high-achieving pupil.

FoolsAssassin · 12/08/2020 19:03

I can only see the headline so no idea what article www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/08/12/40-per-cent-ofa-level-grades-will-downgraded-predicted-results/

Northumberlandlass · 12/08/2020 19:18

This is appalling

stoneysongs · 12/08/2020 20:01

Good news for A level students in Wales - grade is guaranteed not to be lower than their AS grade. If it is, it will be upgraded automatically and new paperwork issued, no need to appeal and the universities will have the AS results anyway. Plus appeals are free as in Scotland.

No word about their strategy for GCSE yet but I think their approach to A levels is a good sign 🤞

neutralintelligence · 12/08/2020 20:03

Schools minister says 40% of results have been downgraded. Was there really grade inflation for 40% of pupils, or is this just a mass downgrading to ensure no-one could possibly get more than they might have got in an exam on a very bad day.
Clearly moderation is not working in a non-exam environment with nothing concrete to actually moderate.
Why was this not picked up until the day before results day?

Northumberlandlass · 12/08/2020 20:04

Wow! Well done Wales. Pressure is on for the government.

neutralintelligence · 12/08/2020 20:08

Singingstones - information about how this will be fixed before the results are disclosed is key to prevent upset. I hope before 8am tomorrow the English education authorities also set out a straight-forward and very fast way to correct a downgraded mark. It has to be resolved before schools go back.
Personally, my DS has 3 sixth form offers that are all conditional and not all that low, so how is he supposed to know where he is going to sixth form if appeals can't be sorted within days or a week or 2 at most.

Northumberlandlass · 12/08/2020 20:10

Hang on, do all students take AS ?

FoolsAssassin · 12/08/2020 20:10

I think they did know but didn’t count on Scotland’s move, hence the late night scrabble to try and mitigate in advance.

GreekOddess · 12/08/2020 20:12

I'm a lurker. Feel sick for next week. Like many others ds is a crammer and only concentrated on his weaker subjects for his mocks.

We are relatively confident that he will get into the 6th form but not at all confident that he will get to study the subjects that he wants. It's the subjects that he is good at that we are worried about. It would be ridiculous for him to stay on and end up studying for the weaker subjects that he doesn't like.

stoneysongs · 12/08/2020 20:21

Completely agree Neutral and that is what I am pleased about really - that Wales seem to have taken into account what this experience is actually going to be like for the poor students. Hopefully at least some A level students can relax a bit now, or start planning their approach to clearing. In reality it may not affect many people - in the announcement they said they would expect the CAGs to be higher than AS grades to reflect the usual natural progression. But it does mean many students won't need to worry about the stories about A* being downgraded to B etc.

Fingers crossed they find a way to look after the GCSE students too.

Northumberlandlass I think England abandoned AS levels? But not sure about that..

FoolsAssassin · 12/08/2020 20:25

I think AS were decoupled from A2 a few years ago in England and that that point most people stopped taking them though some still do as a stand alone qualification. Have a feeling Wales is different.

Northumberlandlass · 12/08/2020 20:35

Thanks @singingstones DS school only offers Further Maths at AS (I think!)

Sorry (hate not being able to edit when I angry type) @FoolsAssassin , yes I was wondering if Wales still had AS system so all students would have results.

stoneysongs · 12/08/2020 20:46

Yes I think just about everyone does AS and then A2 in Wales.

Piggywaspushed · 12/08/2020 20:56

Where do the waiting for ALevel results lot hang out? It feels a bit voyeuristic but I was going to peak at their thread tomorrow and see how things were going for them...

I can't see an obvious lot in Sec Ed or HE.

stoneysongs · 12/08/2020 20:58

See if this works

University 2020 :7: Results tombola, roll up, roll up, pick a prize! www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/3993327-University-2020-7-Results-tombola-roll-up-roll-up-pick-a-prize

sandybayley · 12/08/2020 20:59

@Piggywaspushed - pop over to Higher Education, we're there....

stoneysongs · 12/08/2020 20:59

And there's an oxbridge one (like you I like to have a little look, especially this year..)

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/3993176-Oxbridge-2020-thread-10-the-path-to-the-first-term-just-one-slight-hurdle-to-clear-first

Piggywaspushed · 12/08/2020 21:08

Ah, OK : thanks!

I usually steer clear of Oxbridge threads as they seem to get a little - ermmmm- contentious.

Loving the tombola title.

stoneysongs · 12/08/2020 21:12

It will be interesting to see what the results are like, whether they are generally in line with expectations or not - then we can torture ourselves extrapolating from that information for the next week Confused

sandybayley · 12/08/2020 21:18

@Piggywaspushed - we're all rubbing Ali g nicely on the Oxbridge thread at the moment. But we have had our ups and downs...
