I've read through lots of chat re 2019 but can't see a 2020 10/11+ 2020 thread. How are your DS's getting on?

OP posts:
Delices · 15/01/2020 14:32

No letter re sports for us so think today is d day as no scholarship means no pass - they send no letters apparently at end of month. Luckily we live near an outstanding boys school but am a bit gutted all the same 😐

Delices · 15/01/2020 14:32

Have scholarship at RR but no news re exam for a while

Enpot2007 · 15/01/2020 14:52

@Delices - that’s not necessarily correct. It might mean your son is not being considered for the sports scholarship solely. They assess a lot of boys but not everyone who applies for a scholarship gets invited to an assessment. I know one boy who was not considered for a sports scholarship and offered a place. He’s also in the football squad. Don’t rule it out yet. Hope this makes sense. Hope I’ve understood you correctly too. Apologies if I haven’t.

PiedImperial · 15/01/2020 14:52

Chalky, I think 11+ sports assessments are on Monday, and 10+ are on Tuesday (according to the T school diary).

Delices · 15/01/2020 14:56

Thanks enpot2007 - just called W and apparently more sports assessment letters sent out today - it’s agonising this 🤨

Enpot2007 · 15/01/2020 15:00

@Adaryn - Whitgift usually have more than one day for sports assessment. So they may well be able to move it. We did it last year as it clashed with another sports assessment elsewhere and they were fine with it. If you’ve been invited they will want to see you and understand you will have other interviews too. Hope your son enjoys the day.

Enpot2007 · 15/01/2020 15:12

@Delices I feel your pain. We did this a year ago. It’s hard because you’ve done all you can and you’re having to wait while others hear. No words can describe it. Just hang on in there. Fingers crossed for you all!

Delices · 15/01/2020 15:26

Thanks so much enpot2007 I work with children with cancer - so trying to keep this all in a bit of perspective 🙂

eagle92 · 15/01/2020 15:45

@Delices - did you hear from RR today? I thought we were only going to hear from them next on 13 Feb?

Delices · 15/01/2020 16:43

No eagle 92 sorry to confuse we heard before Christmas that we have a scholarship with RR but you’re right it’s feb 13th re exam and offers

salsybol · 15/01/2020 17:46

My DS had an interview with W today but i haven't received any letter for academic assessment. Does that mean he is not being considered for the scholarship. This process is all very stressful!!
I must say the staff at W are great and they have a way of putting both parent and child at ease

EccaMoldcan · 15/01/2020 18:00

Does anyone have any tips on what the boys should take to the W sports assessment (10+) on Monday? My DS is being assessed on rugby (never played), hockey (never played) and football. Will he be OK with a footy kit (Arsenal!), skins or sweatshirt, shinpads, footy boots, trainers and a now-to-be-purchased gum shield??

Enpot2007 · 15/01/2020 20:51

@salsybol if you’re being considered for an academic scholarship you will be notified. Whitgift has a calendar online that lists when interviews and other events across school will take place if that helps. You can also ask the school too.
@EccaMoldcan wear whatever he feels comfortable with. But your list seems great. My son came in a tracksuit and T-shirt. They will provide hockey sticks unless you have one. Do bring a gum shield and a water bottle. They will do warm ups, play fun games, be split into teams, tested on agility, speed, jumping etc. It’s like a big training session according to my son. Smile Most of all tell him to have fun, because that’s what they’ll tell all the boys and want to see. Good luck!

salsybol · 15/01/2020 21:10

@ Enpot2007. It seems there is not scholarship for us but i will check with the school. Thank you!

Anno7 · 15/01/2020 21:23

@ EccaMoldcan, we are in exactly the same position! He’s never played rugby or hockey before so at least two of them will be in the same boat! I’m sure they’ll have a great time- definitely beats a day at school!

Walkingtheplank · 15/01/2020 21:59

@anno7 We heard about the W sports assessment before being asked for academic assessment/interview which was towards the end of January. Wise owls here comforted me that the sports assessment meant he'd done well enough in the exam.

Also think the T sports assessment and recall was before the interview but they notified us earlier so less stress.

Anno7 · 15/01/2020 22:16

Thank you @walkingtheplank so helpful having everyone on here through all this stress!

turboturtle · 16/01/2020 01:32

Well done to all of those of have received interviews so far.
It's really hard to try and make sense of all this and we can only go by previous years' post, word of mouth and so on.
I can't tell you that if you get an interview on a certain day with a certain person that means an offer, scholarship potential etc, but all I can say is hold on.
To echo @Yey22's point, we went through this a few years ago with our DS who managed to get get offers from both W & T, but had varying results in the papers. Late in interview with T, but early with W.
Much stronger in W with English than maths paper, but was the reverse at T.
Not academic scholarship material but enough to receive offers at both (and others).
We know of a boy who received an academic scholarship at RR , was offered a place at W, but did not even get an interview at T.
There are gifted boys who will get academic scholarships at all the schools they sat for, and others that just muddle through.
The headteachers know that some of the obviously gifted boys may probably go to the nearby grammar schools which is why they over offer.
Some families who had their hearts set on grammars do change their mind and end up choosing choosing W or T .
Nothing is certain until that day before half term when the result are received.
@rakushka04, remember that some boys who haven't got a hope in hell, still sit the exams at both T & W, as their local outstanding state/academy/grammar schools may be so oversubscribed, and their parents wanted a back-up option, so it is probable that some rejection letters may have already gone out. (Not casting dispersions on non-prep junior schools)
As for the boys in my DS's year, they come from a mixture of backgrounds, (state/prep). The boys who have sports scholarships come from a variety of sports (cricket, football, rugby, swimming fencing hockey).
Those with music scholarships and awards, play a variety of different instruments (Three 'John Whitgift' schools concerts at Fairfield hall was excellent btw)
Just hang on in their ladies... xxx

Yey22 · 16/01/2020 07:59

There are so many children to get through it takes time, it’s so stressful, I remember It well. As I said before all the boys I know seem happy at the schools they are now at.

Re academic scholarship, whitgift have specific scholarship days, where as Trinity may indicate the potential for scholarship in the parent interview.

My son loved sport scholarship days at W and T, the schools want the children to feel at ease. They are looking for potential as well as those boys that excel already. He particularly loved the pancakes after his swim assessment Smile.

Fingers crossed for everyone x

Delices · 16/01/2020 08:21

I spoke to a lovely lady in admissions yesterday who said ‘no’ letters are sent at end of January for W - so it’s just a waiting game.

eagle92 · 16/01/2020 09:39

@Delices thank you for this! Did she mention if invitations for interviews were still being sent out?

eagle92 · 16/01/2020 09:56

I wonder if I should just give up hope on hearing positive new from W now...

Delices · 16/01/2020 09:58

Yes eagle92 still sending out as nearly 600 being interviewed - she said

Adaryn · 16/01/2020 09:58

We were told by W admissions yesterday that there are still lots of interview invites to go out. We only know DS has one cos he had a sports assessment letter.

eagle92 · 16/01/2020 10:05

@Adaryn - thank you, this is very reassuring! So won't lose hope just yet then...
