Is there a thread yet for parents with kids doing entrance exams in Jan? It's been so helpful looking through previous years threads and now we're going through it I'd love a hand-hold and any advice on what to expect!

Thanks Jige. It would certainly help a great deal. Smile

enterparentone · 01/02/2019 16:15

Do Trinity do bonding trips too? Anyone know rough cost and when?

If your DS is at T or W, where have you sent your DD? Anyone with one or more DC Indy but others state (grammar or comp)?

I have a feeing that Trinity go somewhere in East Anglia.
Where do the Whitgift Year 7s go? I had thought that Lake Garda was their trip.

Chandellina - your comments sound so like our interview that I think we must have met the same member of staff!

Chelsea3 · 01/02/2019 17:20

T have a residential trip also but I'm not sure where and cost. They mentioned it during the tours.

SoupDragon · 01/02/2019 17:24

T may go to their outward bound center in the Brecon Beacons.

SoupDragon · 01/02/2019 17:29

Yes, the Junior year go to the Brecon Becons. As do 2nd form. I couldn't see what first form do by scanning the school diary.

SoupDragon · 01/02/2019 17:34

The junior form trip appears to be free, as is the one for second form.

nogoingbacktothefuture · 01/02/2019 17:35

T First Form have a Watersports Activity half day and it was something like £25

Both JBug and Second Form Brecon Beacons trips are free

SoupDragon · 01/02/2019 17:35

DSs did a half day water sports trip in first form. I wonder if they still do that.

enterparentone · 01/02/2019 18:09

Thanks for the info! Brecon Beacons may not be Lake Garda Grin but good they have trips - and for free! 👍👍👍

@Chelsea3 - W have second hand uniform sales which are very reasonable for shirts/blazers etc.

@enterparentone - I have a DS at W and a DD at a semi selective state school

gambaspilpil · 01/02/2019 20:23

I was disappointed that the lake Garda trip was now just for the year 6. When my eldest went to W he went to the lake Garda trip in year 7. We still have the masks he picked up from Venice!

gambaspilpil · 01/02/2019 20:26

To be warned with uniforms etc my DS has already lost his track suit top, boot bag, pencil case, water bottle .... it was named too. So would go for the second hand sale if you make it and stock up! Wherever your DS end up I am sure it will be similar....in my DD school someone even lost their shoes!

SoupDragon · 02/02/2019 09:25

T has a pretty good Lost Property system - run by volunteer parents who thus have a vested interest in it! Named items that are found and handed in are reunited with their owner by emailing the pupil and then, after they've not responded, emailing the parent. Parents and pupils can also go and look for stuff at set times. It is by no means fool proof but we have got back many things.

bananabun · 04/02/2019 21:06

Hi everyone! Just joined recently and saw this thread and thoroughly enjoyed reading all of your comments. I know I'm a bit late to the party but can anyone tell me if their DS has been interviewed by the headmaster at W? I was told that it could mean you are being considered for an academic scholarship. Is this true or just hearsay? We only got to see Mr B unfortunately!

Yey22 · 04/02/2019 21:39

W ran three academic scholarship days, my understanding is it will be from those days that they pick the academic scholars.

Chelsea3 · 04/02/2019 22:59

Anyone else having panic attacks about receiving 'thank you but no thank you' offer letter. I have been thinking about the offers coming from W. My understanding is that 90 letters will be sent, but only 60 places. I fully get that not everyone may accept the offer and possibly choose elsewhere. What happens if the offers accepted exceed the spaces.

bananabun · 04/02/2019 23:11

Thanks Yey22! So if I understood it correctly, selected boys would have been invited for a further assessment in order to be considered for academic scholarships, and it has nothing to do with who interviewed them?

Yey22 · 05/02/2019 06:37

The boys had an academic morning (different lessons) rather than interview. The parents met with either the head or first master I think x

Yey22 · 05/02/2019 06:39

My understanding is there is about 150 places for W, they will over offer given they expect to be some movement x

Jige · 05/02/2019 07:15

Yey22 are you talking about 11+ places? There will not be 150 places, you’ve got to take into consideration the 10+ boys they already have (60ish) that will be moving into Y7 so roughly only 120 places.
Yes they do over offer knowing that some will take up grammar school or it won’t be the only school they’ve sat for. But you’ve got to remember, they’ve been doing this for years, and if more should accept then decline offer, they will simply just add on an extra class.

Yey22 · 05/02/2019 07:38

Sorry, I must of misunderstood in the talk I attended W said there would be an approx additional 120-150 places at 11+ and Trinity 70-80 x

walkingtheplank · 05/02/2019 10:04

DS and I talked yesterday about how he would like to receive the news next Friday - talking about all the possible possibilities - especially if he has no offer - it's going to be awful if I have to deliver that piece of news.

The academic scholarship assessment at W rather raised his hopes of an offer.

10 days to go - almost single figures.

plasterdisaster · 05/02/2019 10:48

There was no academic assessment for 10+ only interview.

mrsnobble · 05/02/2019 17:07

The days are long here too. Especially when DS friends have heard from other schools. Can anyone say how many bursaries and scholarships are given at 10+ please? We are Trinity. Very thankful to have found the most useful information on this forum.
