Trinity/Whitgift 2019 thread

Is there a thread yet for parents with kids doing entrance exams in Jan? It's been so helpful looking through previous years threads and now we're going through it I'd love a hand-hold and any advice on what to expect!

I don't think you receive any feedback - I guess it would mean a lot of administration for the schools.

turboturtle · 02/01/2019 08:55

HNY everyone.
enterparentone - Trinity & Whitgift gave feedback to a family we know who were unsuccessful. Whitgift wasn't detailed but they gave them an idea of their ranking and and which paper they did better with. I think Trinity gave a bit more information. Obviously both schools prioritise the successful applicants so the feedback came after interviews and scholarship assessments.
Best of luck to your DS

Thank you! That's really good to hear. Application fee worth something at least(!)

More concerned about english too. Vocab seems to have become limited, need to do more on poetry. He reads a lot but ..

Thank you enterparentone. I'm really nervous and it's not me sitting it!

PeekaPeeka · 03/01/2019 20:26

Very good luck to all the boys sitting exams tomorrow!

My DS1 is helping out - I'll tell him to be extra nice to the candidates in his group.

Re: English: DS2 had a very average English score, I think, in the 10+, but aced the maths & VR and ended up with a 20% scholarship. So don't lose hope!!

Bondiboo74 · 04/01/2019 15:18

So how did your boys get on? I have no clue at all. He said there were four very hard questions at the end of the maths paper that flummoxed him.

calpop · 04/01/2019 15:24

Does anyone know how many maths questions there were at Trinity 11+ today?

enterparentone · 04/01/2019 15:34

I read that they usually put some extra hard "scholarship" questions at the end for maths.

We're awaiting 10+ tomorrow. What was it like at drop off today? Should we arrive very early?

Well done 11+ parents and boys - it's done now, you all made it through! WineCake

drop off was fine tbh, busy but plenty of spaces.

I assumed that 10+ was today as boys had different coloured cards.

DS came out smiling and finished everything in good time - he rushes everything so this is not necessarily a good thing.

I'll ask him about the maths questions.

He said he wrote about someone needing help but will give no more than this.

I was very impressed by organisation and friendliness this morning. We were there quite early but they get everyone processed so quickly that parking wasn't an issue.

Good luck for 10+ tomorrow!

PeekaPeeka · 04/01/2019 19:02

Yes, that's correct, the last few maths questions are always more difficult and are the "scholarship" questions, so don't worry so much about your DS finding them hard.

I think the boys had different coloured cards today because the exams were slightly staggered, in 3 groups, because of the numbers sitting (this is usual T practice, it's not indicative of an unusually large number of candidates).

I dropped off DS1 to help at 9am and it was fine - far less busy than a normal pick-up time. Tomorrow should be fine too, as the numbers doing 10+ and 13+ are generally lower than for the 11+.

Good luck to all sitting tomorrow! DS2 is helping out - it's really weird to think that just a year ago he was a nervous candidate, and tomorrow he'll be a confident j-bug helping out!

I'd just remember that there will be late sitters for these papers, due to illness etc, so it's best not to say too much about content.

My DS sat 11+ on Friday as well. He did tell us about that particular hard Maths question and we think it is a scholarship question. Apparently, he remember the question, so we help him work out the answer at home. It was an Algebra question with 2 variables. Pretty hard for 10-11 years old.

Well, the result will be next week. So, good luck everyone.

Motheroftw0 · 07/01/2019 13:25

Dear all,
Anybody heard from Trinity yet? I recall them making calls the monday following the test saturday for scholarship interviews last year. My DS has sat for 11 plus this year, really hoping he gets an academic scholarship interview. So just trying to understand if anyone has heard from them already, btw I havent!

plasterdisaster · 07/01/2019 14:35

We are still waiting too.

PeekaPeeka · 07/01/2019 14:39

I've just checked back through my emails, and we got a call & follow-up email about DS2's scholarship interview on the Thursday after the exams.

So there's still plenty of time.

Motheroftw0 · 07/01/2019 14:45

Ohh that's a relief, thanks for your response

enterparentone · 07/01/2019 14:48

Haven't heard anything yet and haven't heard that anyone else has either. Good luck everyone! 🤞

When would the deadline be to accept the offer if the candidate receives one? Just wondering if the parents are given a chance to make their decision until they know their child's offer on national offer day March 1st?
