Is there a thread yet for parents with kids doing entrance exams in Jan? It's been so helpful looking through previous years threads and now we're going through it I'd love a hand-hold and any advice on what to expect!

Following as my eldest son sat Trinity 10+ nearly 2 weeks ago. He has been invited to interview but we haven't had a call to say when yet.
Feels like the momentum of the exam has been lost now so nervous about the interview. Are parents interviewed too? We applied for bursary help. Will we find out at the same time as offers are posted? If boys are not given bursaries, could they still be offered normal places or will it just be a no? All this is new to me so very happy to have found this forum! Would you be told at the interview if your son was going to be offered a scholarship? How many scholarships are offered at 10+?

walkingtheplank · 16/01/2019 11:55

We had 11+ Sports invitation from Whitgift this morning, dated yesterday, so I expect HappyMamma that yours will be waiting on your door mat.
We haven't heard about W interview yet though.

Seeline · 16/01/2019 12:26

mrsnobble Sounds strange that you have an interview invite, but no date. They usually do it at the same time. How did you get hte invite - phone, email? I think I would ring to chase.

Firefox1066 · 16/01/2019 13:27

Seeline..what mrsnobble probably means is that she hasn’t received the “thanks but no thanks” letter that T send out within that first week. So her DS has definitely made it through but hasn’t had the call for the actual date yet.

walkingtheplank · 16/01/2019 13:27

I think it's because T emailed to say whether each boy had scored highly enough to be interviewed and that dates/times would arrive in due course - which takes some stress off.

I haven't heard anything from W re interview but DS does have a sports assessment. Not sure I can infer anything from that though.

walkingtheplank · 16/01/2019 13:31

X-post with Firefox!

Firefox1066 · 16/01/2019 13:36

walkingtheplank... if he’s been called to a sports assessment it means he passed the exam.

Seeline · 16/01/2019 14:13

That makes more sense!

walkingtheplank · 16/01/2019 14:33

Firefox, I don't like to take anything for granted - especially after reading that there were 1200 entrants! But hopefully you're correct!

mrsnobble · 16/01/2019 14:43

Yes we had an email to say he'd done well enough to be asked to interview and would get a call within 2 weeks. Too much time for thinking! Thank you. Can anyone else help with other questions?

Firefox1066 · 16/01/2019 15:04

mrsnobble Unless its changed from a couple of years ago:

  1. T don’t “interview” parents. You can ask to see Mr K or any of the admissions staff to get a general idea of how your DS did though
  1. If/when you receive an offer, you’ll receive details of any bursary that may have been awarded.
  1. You can still get an offer (with or without a scholarship) without a bursary.

HTH

Phew W 11+ sports assessment letter received!

Mugglingstrum · 16/01/2019 15:39

Firefox T do “interview” parents. If your son has done well and is being considered for a scholarship you will have a chat with Mr K in his office while DS is being interviewed.

Pickofthepops · 16/01/2019 16:23

If a Whitgift interview letter says 'some questions based on his entrance exam questions ' does that mean he may have been borderline to a pass? Or is that a standard wording?

gambaspilpil · 16/01/2019 16:31

Pickofthepops that’s standard. My DS wasn’t asked specifically about his paper but did get asked some mental maths.

HappyMamma · 16/01/2019 16:44

Phew you made me worry there Pickofthepops as our letter says the same ! Good luck everyone....

Pickofthepops · 16/01/2019 17:48

Phew sorry, tired and overanalysing

Pickofthepops · 16/01/2019 19:10

Does anyone have any experience of sports scholarship process starting from open trials day for rugby or another sport? If so, could you outline steps and any experience? Thanks

turboturtle · 16/01/2019 19:46

PeekaPeeka, my query was more about the amount of the award, and not the scholarship itself.

We were pretty much 100% going to send DS2 to T if any kind offer was made, and they knew it.

I know a few families who already have a DS at T and you're right - They will know that you'll take any offer. One family had an academic scholarship elsewhere but T would not budge on matching the value of the award

plasterdisaster · 16/01/2019 20:15

Yikes! Pickofthepops our letter does not have that standard language you seem to have just to bring something to talk about at the interview

Pickofthepops · 16/01/2019 20:41

Your guess as good as mine re wording. Ds not academic scholarship material so no chance of that. On top of that, his school have not back confirmed they've done the overdue reference yet - the head gone off on sick again and the deputy is overwhelmed! And confusion on sport scholarship side now too, Frazzling all round.

SoupDragon · 16/01/2019 20:58

One family had an academic scholarship elsewhere but T would not budge on matching the value of the award

They certainly used to.

Neveragain2019 · 16/01/2019 22:10

I had a mised call from a 'no caller id' this morning and couldn't resist myself from calling the W admission team. He said that they did not make phone calls and have been sending out 50-60 emails a day. I dared to ask about the result, but he said that I should wait for up to 10 days to 2 weeks!! It is so hard not to think about it!!

gambaspilpil · 16/01/2019 22:38

Neveragain2019 I would have done the same. Each time I have gone through this nightmare I have spent the entire peroid stressed, over thinking everything and trying to work out what it meant if I heard early etc etc..... with W last year we got an email two days after the exam. No idea if that was simply ‘chance’ or if they prioritised boys who had siblings at the school already.... either way it was a good outcome for us but equally others that received interview emails two weeks later got places too....

BlueandPink12 · 16/01/2019 23:54

SpceOpera, could you please shed some light on music scholarship after the event? We are going to apply next year and I am already nervous. Also, which instruments and which grade is your DS at, if you don’t mind me asking. Our music teacher insists that he needs to be at least grade 6 distinction at his principal instrument at 10+ to get an invite.
