English GCSE remark : expert objective advice needed!!

Ok, I have been batting this round on a few threads and need to preface this by saying I am an English teacher... but it isn't helping me at all!

DS got a 5 in Lang and a 6 In Lit. Both below (rather generous ) target grades of 7.
We d found out he was 5 UMS marks into 5 in Lang and therefore needs 8 marks (I think) to get a 6. Not normal remark territory and I'd be terrified of him being downgraded.

However, I have now found out his breakdown and it is bizarre:

Language paper 1

1.4/4
2.4/8
3.3/8
4.12/20
5.8/24 + 6/16

Language paper 2

1.4/4
2.5/8
3.5/12
4.6/16
5.18/24 + 11/16 (this is amazing compared to paper 1!)

The last wording is not mine but the HOD.

The discrepancy between P1 and P2 is marked and the section Bs are the real oddity given that they aren't very different tasks. I have checked and he did paragraph. You also need to know his spelling is highly proficient. He has that teenage predilection for commas and probably didn't use much punctuation other than full stops and commas. His handwriting is hard to read sometimes but he does tend to write quite lengthy answers and was (before the exams) quite confident in jumping through the hoops of each question.

I would be interested to hear from fellow English teachers who have no emotional investment in this what they might advise? I'd like Paper 1 looked at - but once seen it can't be remarked.

I know a 5 is 'good enough' but he is a better student than that. In one of his lit papers he missed an 8 by one mark!

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Oh no, Piggy - how many points off a Level 7 was he??? Was it that the marks didn't change at all, or just not enough? GRRRR on your behalf.

Piggywaspushed · 27/09/2017 13:59

I don't know. Just got a terse email saying unfortunately he remains on a grade 6.

Oh piggy Sad Flowers - I've been checking in all morning for news. Gutted for you since your thread has inspired so many to go for remarks - and so many others have been successful.

Piggywaspushed · 27/09/2017 14:04

I am grateful for everyone's kindness and genuinely happy for everyone else. It is what it is .

Really hoping for some great Karmic return for you and your DS for all your support, knowledge and help over the past month or so, Piggy.

RedHelenB · 27/09/2017 16:16

That is a shame Piggy. No news yet for us.

SpiralArchitect · 27/09/2017 16:50

Piggy - just echoing everyone else and saying what a shame. You've been fab on this thread and so helpful and supportive Flowers

Piggywaspushed · 27/09/2017 16:52

I think there must be some job in educational consultancy somewhere for me!!

I am bearing up. Waiting for English Paper 2 now.

Decorhate · 27/09/2017 18:36

Sorry to hear that Piggy. Fingers crossed for the other paper

Monkey2001 · 27/09/2017 19:18

Yes, if you had to choose any one to go up, I am guessing you would choose language, so fingers crossed all round!

Notanothergiraffe · 27/09/2017 19:37

What a shame the lit did not go up piggy, hopefully there will be more joy with the language P2 for your DS.

mabelchiltern · 27/09/2017 19:41

Hello Piggy! Really do keep returning to this thread because of you - you're ace! Gah! It is what it is and we do our best.

Grrr on your behalf.

Monkey2001 · 29/09/2017 09:51

One of my DS's friends got WJEC review back yesterday, down 2 in both papers. He was 4 off a 4, now 8 off, but at least the grade did not go down. He will have to retake it anyway as he got a 3. He is dyslexic, but very bright - top set maths and science in Y8. School did not do a good job in English for any of them - my top set English son who was 5A at the end of Y6 wrote in his exam about how "me and Karl went up the mountain", failed to capitalise the street name in the address in a letter, missed question marks. I think that only a few girls got 9s.

This could have been a fair re-mark, but adds to suspicions that the Boards are trying to make us all believe that the marking of the new English exams was acceptable and boosting their income by being very mean with marks in later remarks.

Monkey2001 · 29/09/2017 10:03

Just called the Exams Office - "Yes, some of the results have come in, I will be working on them over the weekend, but at the moment my focus is on other things." I feel sorry for her being so overloaded, but this is REALLY annoying!!!

Piggywaspushed · 29/09/2017 10:51

ye, that is annoying. I suspect the same thing is going on at my DS's school since she told me he would be told about his remark. (Lit). He hasn't , and if I hadn't contacted her I still wouldn't know!

my focus is on other things

I always think that's something that should not be said out loud to parents!

OP posts:
Notanothergiraffe · 29/09/2017 11:31

my focus is on other things - aghhhhhh

I would be fuming. Surely it wouldn't take too long to just look for your child?

I understand they are under a lot of pressure but still...

Teddygirlonce · 29/09/2017 14:25

Reporting back that DS's Eng. Lang. Level 6 grade didn't change at all - having had the two papers remarked he's gone down two points - GRRRR.

So just waiting for the third lot of bad news (I suspect) for Eng. Lit. Paper 1.

Sighs a the expense and unnecessary stress of it all...Sad.

Cafeconleche · 29/09/2017 15:43

Oh teddygirl - I'm now firmly of the belief that those who asked for reviews late in the day are being penalised for the woeful marking overall and the numerous uplifts of grades of those who put scripts in for review straight after results day. AQA have to make the 'marks can go down' mantra work - and as all English marking is subjective there's no come-back from the students, even if you pay to have the scripts back and still disagree with the grade. Will keep everything crossed for your English Lit paper Wine Flowers
