English GCSE remark : expert objective advice needed!!

Ok, I have been batting this round on a few threads and need to preface this by saying I am an English teacher... but it isn't helping me at all!

DS got a 5 in Lang and a 6 In Lit. Both below (rather generous ) target grades of 7.
We d found out he was 5 UMS marks into 5 in Lang and therefore needs 8 marks (I think) to get a 6. Not normal remark territory and I'd be terrified of him being downgraded.

However, I have now found out his breakdown and it is bizarre:

Language paper 1

1.4/4
2.4/8
3.3/8
4.12/20
5.8/24 + 6/16

Language paper 2

1.4/4
2.5/8
3.5/12
4.6/16
5.18/24 + 11/16 (this is amazing compared to paper 1!)

The last wording is not mine but the HOD.

The discrepancy between P1 and P2 is marked and the section Bs are the real oddity given that they aren't very different tasks. I have checked and he did paragraph. You also need to know his spelling is highly proficient. He has that teenage predilection for commas and probably didn't use much punctuation other than full stops and commas. His handwriting is hard to read sometimes but he does tend to write quite lengthy answers and was (before the exams) quite confident in jumping through the hoops of each question.

I would be interested to hear from fellow English teachers who have no emotional investment in this what they might advise? I'd like Paper 1 looked at - but once seen it can't be remarked.

I know a 5 is 'good enough' but he is a better student than that. In one of his lit papers he missed an 8 by one mark!

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Piggy so very sorry to hear that your DS's outcome was unchanged...

GRRRRRR

SadHmmAngry all rolled into one.

Monkey2001 · 05/10/2017 12:05

Oh no Piggy, I really thought you were due some good news. I think we are all now highly cynical that AQA is protecting itself from a reputational crisis and having to get all papers remarked due to their appalling accuracy.

Thanks for starting this little support network.

mabelchiltern · 05/10/2017 12:08

Sorry to hear that Piggy. You did all you could and it was worth a try. Thanks for bringing us all together. Flowers

Notanothergiraffe · 05/10/2017 12:23

Sorry to see that Piggy Cake Flowers

Whilst it is probably of little consolation to you right now, I am very grateful you started this thread as without it I would not have got DS's exam remarked. Sincere thanks from me.

Oh bugger, so sorry to hear that.

Cafeconleche · 05/10/2017 13:24

Oh piggy - absolutely gutted for you Flowers Wine. 'You woz robbed' doesn't even come close! And I second all the AQA conspiracy theories. I have no faith in the system but, thanks to you, feel fully prepared for A Levels should there be any marking debacles in 2 years' time (though I fervently hope it's all plain sailing, obviously!) Thank you again starting this thread and for easing the collective stress and trauma of the past few weeks - I can't quite believe the GCSE results came out 6 weeks ago today Confused. Onwards and upwards for all our DCs - and their amazing parents - aren't they lucky to have us Grin

RedHelenB · 05/10/2017 16:28

That s a shame Piggy but tbf when they remark they do it from scratch without looking at previous marks. Still.waiting for both English but certainly not counting on the marks going up ( as long as they font go down!)

EllieFredrickson · 05/10/2017 19:45

Oh Piggy! Thanks for starting the thread. It's been great to have the support and rant about AQA English marking with others affected.

Piggywaspushed · 05/10/2017 21:33

Thanks all. Onwards and upwards.

This has been a nice thread.

Sorry that it hasn't been a positive review result for others either. Sad

We now have dd's reviewed script back, both answers were marked which was her main worry, but not sure I understand how the marking works. There are more red letters in the margin and green ticks(is the review in green?) than marks allocated and the final comment on second q from reviewer was "Agreed. Within tolerance." But no actual grade unlike first q.

RedHelenB · 08/10/2017 08:42

Eng lit back still.1 mark off an 8. But her friend went from a 7 to a 9. WJEC board.

thesunwillout · 10/10/2017 11:51

hi I just wanted to share that my dd got re marked, and she was awarded 2 more marks to take her up to a grade 7.
She'd got a good 8 on paper one, and was one mark away from a grade 7 on paper two.

So, although it was a risk it paid off for us.

thesunwillout · 10/10/2017 11:51

also it was AQA.

JufusMum · 10/10/2017 12:32

I'm so cross with DD's English teacher. She took Lit early and got a 5, but she was 6 marks off a 6. Teacher advised against remark, but now I am hearing about a LOT of remarks going up by 10-15 marks. Feel cheated :(
School has financial problems so no doubt they didn't want to pay for a remark :(

thesunwillout · 10/10/2017 12:38

hi, I paid for the remark, not sure if I'll get a refund.
I'm not sure I would have done a remark if it was more than 1-4 marks, as in some cases they can go down.
My dd was a yr early too, it makes you wonder.

LIZS · 10/10/2017 12:42

Jufus I think you'll find majority of remarks are paid for by parents. Schools only tend to do it where they feel there has been a significant number of lower grades than expected in one subject. No guarantee it would have gone up though. You should be more cross that your dc was forced to sit it early with little prospect of achieving a very good grade, seems a pointless exercise all round.

JufusMum · 10/10/2017 13:46

LIZS I am furious she was forced to sit a year early, only 40% of the cohort passed. I will not allow DD to resit as I don't want her to go through that stress again, effectively meaning the Year 10 stress was for nothing!

mabelchiltern · 13/10/2017 08:54

We're getting our re mark results today!

Monkey2001 · 13/10/2017 09:15

We're getting our re mark results today!

Not a superstitious school then!
