Thanks for the suggestion of tassomai by the way. Just signed DS up and he really likes it. Has done 18 tests already last night. :)

ShanghaiDiva · 01/04/2016 07:46

for anyone whose child is studying a mfl , the memrise site www.memrise.com is good for learning vocabulary and there are lots of different courses aimed at gcse and a level. You can also create your own vocab lists of words you struggle with. Ds used for both German and Mandarin and I use if for HSK Mandarin exams. The basic option is free and there is a premium option you can pay for. I use the basic option and it's great for learning vocabulary :)

Tassomai is good for recalling information, rather than learning it. It tests you, rather than teaches you.

DD is struggling with non calc maths papers. Are they meant to know how many kilometres in a mile?

needastrongone · 01/04/2016 14:54

I'll ask DS Exit, he will know. They've been doing a lot of past papers already and AD Maths revision in class.

needastrongone · 01/04/2016 14:54

It's 2.2 isn't it?

Think km to mile calculation was in older syllabus (so older past papers). Not come across it in past papers from the last couple of years. Think 1km = 5/8 Mile.
Not sure what the max min turning points are Dream? or the problem solving sets? maybe i know it by another name or the look (or it's a completely different syllabus). DS doing a non-calc paper as we speak.
Having finished marking his last module science tests (paper 2's), i'm happy he's got a good foundation now, just needs to consolidate and learn how to answer the questions. Simple & precise seems to be what is required - no waffle!

ExitPursuedByABear · 01/04/2016 15:16

I know what the calculation is Grin We have a haulage company.

I just wondered if they were expected to know, rather than be given the formula. On another question the formula for converting farenheit to centigrade was given.

flatmouse · 01/04/2016 15:19

Sorry Exit :) LOL i just asked DS and he said both were in the one he just finished - June 2014? he said (and i've not yet looked) the farenheit one kind of told you in the question but the M to KM didn't so i guess he'd best learn that. And ignore what i said about older papers as i was obviously wrong :)

ExitPursuedByABear · 01/04/2016 15:23

That's the paper she has just done. Maths does not come easily to her, despite being on target for an A grade. She wailed loudly 'What is the point of Maths'

Dreamgirls - to find turning points is your dd using completing the square? or is it in calculus?

Grin We don't own a haulage company, good job ha!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/04/2016 16:14

ok, so differentiating. Which bit is tricky for her?

For those struggling with maths, some of them may find yay math quite good. The methods are those used in the states which sometimes don't always coincide with our methods, but there is a lot of decent content presented in a very watchable way.

Ds is doing the questions he got wrong in the maths igcse - there were quite a few! But none of it made sense to me!

He says that tassomai is teaching him physics as well as testing him, but he has reordered his forgotten cgp revision book - at his own cost!

sign up to tes and she will find some extra questions here

All she needs to do is differentiate the equation and set that new equation to equal 0. Solve for x, shove x in the original equation and solve for y.
