I thought I would start this tradition once again while we all wait? DS only sat Trinity...

Thanks Trashpack.
Nice to see some sunshine. I will have to wait there as wont have time to come home and go back. Wonder if they would let me watch? from a distance of course.

Inneedofwine · 30/01/2013 11:39

Inneedofwine - Have been told that at T if parents have a separate interview with Mr B, the HM then in line for Scholarship, or they are thinking about it. If in the general room where HM mingles then not an academic scholarship but obviously this would not rule out Sports/Music etc.

GETASHLEY Well we haven't been told we'll be meeting the HM so guess that rules us out Sad

Inneedofwine · 30/01/2013 11:42

Oh and good luck goldfish and burntoutdad. Hope it goes well for your DSs

GETASHLEY · 30/01/2013 11:44

Inneedofwine. Neither did we! But two ultra brights from DS school were seen by Mr Timm ( admissions reg) and at the same time HM had a chat with parents. Good luck to you and your DS and then it's the long wait until the 15th!!!

Inneedofwine · 30/01/2013 12:12

Thanks GETASHLEY. I'll just be glad when Thursday's out of the way now. And then as you say, the longest two weeks ever. Well at least we're only at the 10+ stage and can give it a go next year if no scholarships are forthcoming (as that's the only way we'll manage it). Though I can't imagine going through this process at 11+ where it's a lot more final. Definitely have no hair or fingernails left by the middle of Feb.

EyesWideClosed · 30/01/2013 15:05

Just discovered this thread. Whitgift/Trinity are certainly popular options! Obviously the two schools have a very generous bursary/scholarship allowance. I see that 43% of all pupils are on some form of fee remission. Does anyone know where your ds has to be placed in order to secure a substantial bursary (assuming you qualify of course)? My ds has just been interviewed for 10+ entry at both W and T.

Marni23 · 30/01/2013 17:57

Have decided to break cover and try to clear up some of the scholarship interview confusion. I was told while at T (DS didn't sit W so can't help there) that DS was a 'strong candidate' for a scholarship, but that there could be no guarantees/confirmation until the results come out.

I wasn't told that DS was having a scholarship interview in the original phone call, just got the usual 'you'll be here for around 30 minutes' and 'HM will be available to chat to'.

After DS was taken off for his interview though, HM came into the room where I was waiting and took me off for a chat in his office. It was during this conversation that he told me DS had done very well in the exam and was being considered for a scholarship.

Hope that's useful and good luck to everyone with interviews still to come.

Inneedofwine · 30/01/2013 18:09

Welcome to the thread EyesWideClosed although I can't help with your bursary question.

Thanks very much for that info Marni23 and congratulations to you and your DS - you must be very proud of him! Were you 10+ or 11+?

Marni23 · 30/01/2013 18:15

We're 11+. Thanks for the congrats but the fat lady most definitely hasn't sung where scholarships are concerned! Wasn't going to post about it, but it's the sort of info I'd have wanted to know...

Inneedofwine · 30/01/2013 18:22

Well fingers crossed - hope you get good news Smile.

Somelikeithott · 30/01/2013 18:26

Thanks Marni for being so open.

burntoutdad · 30/01/2013 18:32

All over now! DS didn't appear too enthusiastic after sports recall so not sure how he did. Apparently there were about 10 boys at 11+ and 5 at 10+ so has been narrowed down considerably, although some boys at the initial day would obviously be tested for different sports.
At the end the coach came over told us he would make recommendations to the Head and that we would hear whether the school will make an offer for a place in Feb. That was it, done and dusted!

burntoutdad · 30/01/2013 18:34

Also had heard through the rumour mill that there was less money available to give away this year for scholarships etc (perhaps due to build of accom?) so they are considering carefully!!

EyesWideClosed · 30/01/2013 20:56

Well done to your ds Marni. Was his interview with Mr Timms? After two very different interviews for my ds at W and T, I have come to the conclusion that you just have to be prepared for the unexpected. At one, my ds wasn't ask one bit of info about himself and at the other it was all about him!

burntoutdad · 30/01/2013 21:08

EyesWideClosed - which one was which?

Kylep · 30/01/2013 21:11

Well done to your ds marni, fingers crossed for u burnt out dad over thinking about interviews ANC so on is doing my head in so let's see what the postie brings :-) and burntoutdad makes sense that they will be cutting at W let's hope not for most of us

Somelikeithott · 30/01/2013 21:49

Burntout, so did you get to watch? I'm not surprised, your DS must have been exhausted. I remember after DS's initial assessment, when we picked him up he was just grumpy all the way home. Then after a nice hotmail and about 3 lots of pudding 😯, he then suddenly came alive and talked about the sports he'd done, unsolicited. He is not one to give out lots of feedback anyway ( well apart from sports).

burntoutdad · 30/01/2013 22:04

hott - no didnt get to watch, we all sat in café area in sports hall. but to be honest im now not expecting too much in terms of scholarships 5 -10 % seems the norm anyway. Don't think in line for any academic scholarship to top it up. even though it may seem that something is better than nothing we would have to consider that, that would mean DS HAS to turn up for any game/training they ask him too, even at weekends. Not so if you don't take scholarship.

burntoutdad · 30/01/2013 22:08

kylep - don't know if cuts affect bursaries as these are from a different 'pot'. I think it may be only scholarships. did wonder that if only 5 boys in yr got recall to football do they give scholarship to just one or share it out in rank and take results etc into account??

burntoutdad · 30/01/2013 22:09

anyone have answer to nothingyummymum question re importance of VR test?

Somelikeithott · 30/01/2013 22:42

Burntout, that was meant to read hot meal, not hotmail. And a shock face after 3 puddings, ( not sure what happened there). Yes, I know someone who has a sports scholarship in another school and what you say is so true. Although he has a 25% one.

I assume VR will carry as much weight as the other subjects. I think the creative writing and comprehension add up to one paper.

EyesWideClosed · 30/01/2013 22:50

burntoutdad-talk about himself at W; do anything but at T. Not sure what that means...

Ringstar · 30/01/2013 23:25

Hi I remember how the waiting and yearning felt and this thread is so reminiscent. W seemed so glamorous, and the place we had to be at. The reality of W took some getting used to, so go in with your eyes open. Numbers are high, big school and it can be impersonal (unless your ds is a sports star or musician genius). Best of luck to all though. W really suits some but not all.

EyesWideClosed · 31/01/2013 00:18

Ringstar-Are you saying that your ds is now at W?

Goldfish678mum · 31/01/2013 00:55

Hi there. Interview at T all done and dusted! I know what you mean eyeswideclosed - DS basically did a maths test and briefly talked about his trophy that he brought in! Not what I expected at all! From talking with the other parents there afterwards, seems we all went through the same experience! I did notice that the children waiting for interview today were all at the sports assessment so maybe this has something to do with it!?! Who knows! So glad it's over. Nothing I can do now. Good luck everyone x
