If we were to marry in Edinburgh...

Hi!
We live abroad and this year for our winter holiday, were thinking of coming to Edinburgh, and we'd like to get married whilst we are there.
All the paperwork can be done online, but as it's just the two of us we wouldn't have any witnesses.
We don't know anyone in Edinburgh- am I being silly in just thinking we will be able to find two passers by at the time? I've read about it being a thing when people elope and manage to find two strangers to act as witnesses - but knowing my luck it wouldn't work!

Anyway, im really looking forward to Christmassy visit to Edinburgh, hopefully I'll find a way around the witness thing - does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks all x

I live in Edinburgh- I’d be delighted to be your witness!

Timeforchangeithink · 15/05/2023 17:04

How exciting - I'm a short train ride away too nearer the time!

In Scotland you can ask the registrar and they will find local witnesses for you, I often do it as I’m admin for the registrar where I live

Hiddendoor · 15/05/2023 17:09

My mum was a registrar in City centre of Edinburgh many years ago. She had many, many couples who asked strangers on the street (royal mile a good spot!) To be their witnesses. As far as I can remember, the couple would just stop and ask people passing by.

Oh wow, thank you all!

Ive been in contact with the registry office so maybe I will mention it to them and see what they say.

But to have kind offers from you lovely lot is amazing!

I was starting to think it wouldn't be possible!

I would do this, no problem. I live in Edinburgh.

Make it a lunchtime and I’ll dig my best hat out!

aintnospringchicken · 18/05/2023 12:40

I live in Edinburgh and would happily be a witness.

FinallyHere · 18/05/2023 16:45

Ahhhh

Mumsnet at its best

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 19/05/2023 17:32

It'd be totally fine. Stick a post on here the day before and you'd have a queue of witnesses.

Hedjwitch · 19/05/2023 17:36

I did this for a MNer a few years ago. She was getting married in the Scottish glens. Me and another MNer volunteered to be witnesses and had a fab day. Theres a thread about it somewhere.

We did this, registry office in Edinburgh across from the cathedral. They got 2 witnesses from the street for us. An older lady from Australia was over the moon to be asked. It was January and snowing. The bells of the cathedral were ringing. Our photos (taken by our taxi drivrr) were in calton hill in the snow, very natural. I loved our wedding, no stress and very romantic.

BrainFrazzled · 07/07/2023 06:25

Should be no problem at all. Just ask someone on the street, or post on here a couple of days before. Plenty of Edinburgh based MNers on here.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/07/2023 06:40

I also did this for a Mumsnetter a couple of years ago in York.

Groovee · 07/07/2023 11:16

I'm in Edinburgh, would be happy to be a witness if it's not a Monday or a Tuesday x

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 07/07/2023 11:20

My brother just got married in the registry office in Edinburgh. A couple of folk who work there ended up being the witnesses

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 07/07/2023 11:26

I work in the city centre and would be happy to help too!

AlltheFs · 07/07/2023 11:31

Not in Edinburgh but hotel staff did ours, we got married in our own in the Lakes. They did it a lot, I’m sure if you ask where you are staying they will oblige!

Getting married in December in Edinburgh city hall just wondering has anyone done this how they got witness as it will just be me and my partner traveling over starting to panic about it already 😏

rogdmum · 30/09/2023 09:09

82a if you don’t get responses here, I’d start your own thread asking if anyone in Edinburgh could be a witness for you. I’m not far from Edinburgh and would happily pop through. 😁

Chemenger · 30/09/2023 11:14

I will probably be available in December in Edinburgh!

Groovee · 30/09/2023 11:29

I'm in Edinburgh, but it would depend on the date.

Lottapianos · 30/09/2023 11:42

'My brother just got married in the registry office in Edinburgh. A couple of folk who work there ended up being the witnesses'

That's great to hear. DP and I are considering a wedding with no guests, but registry office websites usually have a pretty firm message about how you must bring your own witnesses and the staff cannot act for you. I would be too stressed out about asking strangers on the street, worrying that I wouldn't find anyone in time!

Good luck OP, so nice to see that you have had lots of offers already ☺️

82a · 30/09/2023 14:10

Thank you so much everyone 🥰we are getting married 4th December at 2clock if anyone would be available I'd really appreciate it x

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 30/09/2023 16:46

Put me in the queue!! I’d love to do it 🥰🥰
