If we were to marry in Edinburgh...

Hi!
We live abroad and this year for our winter holiday, were thinking of coming to Edinburgh, and we'd like to get married whilst we are there.
All the paperwork can be done online, but as it's just the two of us we wouldn't have any witnesses.
We don't know anyone in Edinburgh- am I being silly in just thinking we will be able to find two passers by at the time? I've read about it being a thing when people elope and manage to find two strangers to act as witnesses - but knowing my luck it wouldn't work!

Anyway, im really looking forward to Christmassy visit to Edinburgh, hopefully I'll find a way around the witness thing - does anyone have any ideas?

You might be better starting a new thread @travelb42late - people likely to click on thread, see it’s very old and guess the OP is married by now. You won’t have any bother getting witnesses nearer the time. As I said to OP, stick up a post a couple of days before and you’ll get some volunteers. Or ask people in the street.

Lots of folk go away on holiday for the Edinburgh trades so might not want to commit at this stage - put something up nearer the time and you’ll get witnesses, no problem.

If mumsnet doesn’t come up with the goods, ask the registrar to help you out - someone from the office will do it, or you can just ask street randommers. You’ll be fine!!

We eloped to edinburgh and had a wonderful day. We married in the registry next to st Giles Cathedral. 4th January and it was snowing. They went down to the street and literally asked 2 people who weren't together to be our witnesses, one was an older lady from Australia who had recently lost her husband. She said this was the highlight of her trip. It was all very romantic. The bells rang in the Cathedral and we could see the snow from the window. We paid a taxi driver to drive around some sights, calton hill etc and he took some photos for us. Don't regret it at all. We had loads of fun and I felt like I was in a movie.
