So only about 2 months til the final exams so starting a thread to discuss revision, exams etc.

Have any schools released details of easter revision classes yet? I've heard nothing from our school and don't know if they are doing any. If they aren't, I might look at what else is on offer over easter.

8th August seems so far away!

It went in quite quick last year until a couple of days before. I couldn’t sleep the night before, my son wasn’t bothered! He woke up at 8 am, checked his results, forwarded on his text to me and went right back to sleep!

NicolaSturGONE · 12/05/2023 21:22

At least they get a text at 8am. We had to wait for the postie coming at 2 or 3pm. Except my pal whose mum went right down to the sorting office for opening at like 7am and decided to phone my DM to boast her DD got all grade 1s. I hadn't even gotten my results yet. My DM never forgave her. We weren't friends for much longer (I got a mix of 1s and 2s in case anyone wonders!)

Is French nat 5 not compulsory in other schools? DS has that on Monday. He hates it.

dementedpixie · 12/05/2023 21:45

No, the only compulsory nat5s in our school are English and Maths. When I was at school we needed to take a language at O'Grade

thaegumathteth · 12/05/2023 22:25

Last year when the national 5 results came in I had to leave ds home alone because dh was working away and I was in A&E with Dd. So hoping I'll actually be here this year!

No, a language was only compulsory up
until end of BGE, s3. Neither of mine have done one. They can also do 3 sciences and don’t have to do a social subject.

Yes just make sure they sign up for it! They don’t all do so.

my higher certificate came when I was on holiday abroad with my parents 😭 had to wait days to get it!

Ours have a compulsory language too - French or Spanish through to S4

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 13/05/2023 09:16

A modern language is theoretically compulsory at my lots' school, but my youngest DD dropped language requirement after S2 due to me arguing her case that as a dyslexic, it was too much for her. It turns out 3 other children's parents took the same line so the 4 of them have learning support when the rest of the year group have a language class... that's been very helpful, and a surprise! I was told in my meeting with the head they couldn't guarantee any teaching during the time she should have a language and we were expecting her to have study time in the library.

It was not compulsory in ds's school but they picked options from columns designed to spread their choices out. There was one column with just French, spanish and another couple of subjects that were when less popular , but if the other subjects were over subscribed/not enough chose languages some were told to pick something else from the column.

itsalwayscycling · 13/05/2023 11:42

Language compulsory up until end of S3 but I think they streamed the classes so those not planning to do nat5 didn’t seem to do much work in those classes in S3 as far as I could tell.

Rainbowshit · 13/05/2023 18:39

I was quite pleased a modern language is compulsory until I realised how poorly taught it is. I was horrified at the way they prepare them for the exam. It's just rote learning.

Threeboysadogandacat · 13/05/2023 20:44

A language was not compulsory at ds3’s school but he did Gaelic at N5 (they chose from French and Gaelic in P7).@Rainbowshit we were very lucky that he had a fantastic teacher. She made the lessons interesting and it was one of his favourite subjects. He would like to have taken it at Higher but couldn’t fit anything else in. He’s already doing six this year.

Survey99 · 13/05/2023 20:57

The talking exam in french does feel very rote learning based but they do need to produce the answers to the questions and write the presentation themselves with the correct grammar. They can't rely on rote to get decent marks for the listening, reading or the unknown questions in the writing part.

Do agree they dont learn a language beyond very basic, not sure what is a realistic expectation of language skill for a school pupil. Ds has a A at both NAT5 and Higher and could barely string a sentence together outside the classroom.

Threeboysadogandacat · 13/05/2023 21:50

@Survey99 I did higher French many, many moons ago and thought I was quite good - until I went to Paris!

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 15/05/2023 16:34

DD back from Nat 5 French... she said the reading paper was harder than she expected and had lots of subject specific vocab she had to look up in dictionary which was time consuming, listening she said was easier...

My DS said the same. Lots of dictionary use for the reading but the listening was fine.

NicolaSturGONE · 15/05/2023 18:45

business management N5 tomorrow. Another of DDs weaker subjects. Then it will be around 2 weeks until Art then D&M

@Threeboysadogandacat I lived in France for four years but my French was never good enough for the Parisians!

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 15/05/2023 22:11

My DD has Bus Man tomorrow too, then Mod Studies on Thursday and a nice long gap before Art and she's done...

Chompiemompie · 15/05/2023 22:21

@TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong - exact same here!

Rainbowshit · 15/05/2023 22:56

My DS has physics on Wednesday then a week until computing. Then he's done. Cannot wait. Been quite stressful!
