At a time when polls are showing unprecedented support for independence and even John Curtice agrees the polls are clear, why is Scotsnet such a bastion of unionist opinions? Is it just due to the demographic of Mumsnet? Why has this site become such a right wing enclave?

Migrants from what countries?

WouldBeGood · 26/01/2021 18:13

Look at all the problems with Ireland.

The free movement borders referred to before were with Schengen area countries.

And what about pensions/insurance/healthcare/rights of residence?

WouldBeGood · 26/01/2021 18:13

The ones where they take tiny boats across the Channel and drown trying to reach England?

WouldBeGood · 26/01/2021 18:14

So England will require a border or the migrants would just come to Scotland and go to England.

Graffitiqueen · 26/01/2021 18:14

Why the hell would England agree to free movement of people from Scotland to England if Scotland was in the EU?!?! That's what Brexit was all about!, Reducing immigration from EU countries!

StarryEyeSurprise · 26/01/2021 18:15

Again, migrants from what countries? Germany, France, The Netherlands? Trying to get to England via Scotland?

WouldBeGood · 26/01/2021 18:20

Yes, from any countries that they have reached!

Obviously it would be great if they stayed in Scotland but they won’t

StarryEyeSurprise · 26/01/2021 18:21

@WouldBeGood

The ones where they take tiny boats across the Channel and drown trying to reach England?
Oh you did not just write that. I was trying to be polite but come on.

And people say that indy supporters are lacking in education!

On the Ch4 news, they had someone say they voted for Brexit to stop immigrants coming to England from Syria!

WouldBeGood · 26/01/2021 18:22

So now I’m stupid for questioning the border issue because if established law on freedom of movement?

WouldBeGood · 26/01/2021 18:23

Brexit was voted for by people who were clueless about what they were voting for.

It’s important to know what you’re voting for.

WouldBeGood · 26/01/2021 18:25

My point is that people are desperate to get to England.

Therefore we will need a hard border from their point of view, as well as European precedent.

StarryEyeSurprise · 26/01/2021 18:26

@WouldBeGood

Yes, from any countries that they have reached!

Obviously it would be great if they stayed in Scotland but they won’t

Ok, I'm now going to take a break and do what PrettyBird does..
WouldBeGood · 26/01/2021 18:26

It seems your answer is that you don’t have a clue how this would actually work

Applesky · 26/01/2021 18:31

Yes let's vote for independence, don't worry about the important details Confused

kamalasshaman · 26/01/2021 18:35

We actually need migrants in Scotland. But I highly doubt there will be floods of folk in small boats heading to Scotland from Europe.

OP posts:
Graffitiqueen · 26/01/2021 18:36

Completely missing the point there. The migrants won't be staying in Scotland if they can move freely between Scotland and England.

Graffitiqueen · 26/01/2021 18:38

One thing that will be different if there is another referendum is that there's no way it can now be claimed that Scottish politicians are morally superior to English politicians.

Scottishskifun · 26/01/2021 18:44

It's quite well known that the Republic of Ireland is being used as a human trafficking route via lorries I think that is at the crux of the how would this be managed with the border. How do you then stop Scotland becoming another trafficking route if it joins the EU.

It's a bit naive to think that this wouldn't happen people will take many many risks. I have seen with my own eyes migrants crossing the border from Italy to France in the middle of winter up in the mountains when on ski holidays.

WouldBeGood · 26/01/2021 18:44

@kamalasshaman my point was exactly that we need immigrants here, , but they will go to England if there is no border.

For which I am called thick 🤷🏻‍♀️

Graffitiqueen · 26/01/2021 18:47

Quite. It's spectacularly naive to think that Scotland would be allowed to join the EU AND have free movement of people and goods to England.

kamalasshaman · 26/01/2021 18:48

That wasn't clear @WouldBeGood -I think the migrants issue is not really relevant. They are not going to be here any more than at present but they would be welcome.

OP posts:
WouldBeGood · 26/01/2021 18:52

@kamalasshaman again, not the point. I’m all for migrants, but England is not.

If there is no border between England and Scotland the migrants will use EU membership of Scotland to get here, then head off to England. Ergo, there will have to be a hard, proper border between England and Scotland

kamalasshaman · 26/01/2021 18:52

@Graffitiqueen have you been reading this thread? People are commenting about the level of vitriol expressed towards the SNP putting them off Scotsnet.

Moral superiority isn't just about private lives, we've our share of politicians from all parties involved in scandal in the 20 years of the parliament.

Moral superiority tends to be more important in concern for real people's lives and not for rich investors and cronies from Eaton.

OP posts:
Graffitiqueen · 26/01/2021 18:54

Exactly why would England reopen its border to the EU through Scotland after going through brexit to stop free movement!!

kamalasshaman · 26/01/2021 18:54

Well @WouldBeGood if England would be a sensible country and be in the EU then no hard borders! But that's what they voted for!
At least they got the chance to vote!
