At a time when polls are showing unprecedented support for independence and even John Curtice agrees the polls are clear, why is Scotsnet such a bastion of unionist opinions? Is it just due to the demographic of Mumsnet? Why has this site become such a right wing enclave?

I just find the fact that NS posts an 'unscripted' Twitter video about transphobia in the party (AKA women asking for their rights to be maintained snd objecting to MW working in rape crisis) so bizarre.

Joanna Cherry and others have been relentlessly attacked for years but nothing.

Humza Yousef's proposed amendments to the Hate Crime bill to protect our right to discuss our rights and our sex must have set off a bit of a bomb.

There is also something rather dark and nasty about to come out around the Salmond trial.

My guess is some (Humza?) are setting out their stalls for a leadership contest.

StarryEyeSurprise · 28/01/2021 08:03

Humza Yousef was the driver behind the original Hate Crime Bill. This was due to the racist abuse experienced by his family.

reprehensibleme · 28/01/2021 08:08

It'll be interesting to see whether women leave the SNP after this twitter video (the video appearing after a tranch of young people left the SNP due to women's rights 'transphobia' ). NHS Scotland suggests 0.5% of the Scottish population are trans. Women make up 51.5% of the Scottish population. Not saying the SNP are playing to the noisy gallery, but really?

StarryEyeSurprise · 28/01/2021 08:11

Why would women leave the SNP now? I'm being dumb, sorry.

titsbumfannythelot · 28/01/2021 08:18

Because the twaw doesn't sit well with lots of us.

StarryEyeSurprise · 28/01/2021 08:21

Twaw?

titsbumfannythelot · 28/01/2021 08:22

Trans women are women

Iwillneverbesatisfied · 28/01/2021 08:22

Sadly the majority of voters don't really bother with social media or pay attention to things like the trans movement so don't know everything that is going on. If they did, then yes, it would influence voters. I think more would change their vote.

Iwillneverbesatisfied · 28/01/2021 08:25

There is also something rather dark and nasty about to come out around the Salmond trial.

Do you know something we don't @Cismyfatarse?

I am hoping and praying that both of them are f*cked by this trial

StarryEyeSurprise · 28/01/2021 08:36

@titsbumfannythelot

Trans women are women
Ok
StarryEyeSurprise · 28/01/2021 10:46

I'm not going to start a new thread for this so apologies op.
Anyone else unable to get their head around the fact that the Tories refused to stop flights into the UK ( including those from Wuhan) until 100,000 lives lost and the UK having the highest death rate in the world. This despite the current UK Government taking us out if the EU in order to.stop travel , stopping Erasmus even as it doesn't fit with the stopping FOM strategy and offering EU nationals money to leave the UK.
I actually don't know how they sleep at night or are their levels of empathy so low that they don't care about the dead? It's unbelievable to me that people in power would act this way.

StarryEyeSurprise · 28/01/2021 10:47

Apologies for the typos / bad punctuation in that comment.

Jodri · 28/01/2021 10:50

Hmm I’m a bit cynical about all politicians actions.

NS releasing a Twitter video, telling of the mass exodus of trans supporters from the SNP. Surely this is also telling us that these supporters are not happy with the SNP and ergo the terfs should be happy with the SNP. So, again under her watch, the SNP is all things to all people. Win-Win all round.

Looking within the lines of written text, blogs and speeches and being able to work out what’s what is paramount apparently. Well, according to The Times the judge at Craig Murray’s trial yesterday it is.

reprehensibleme · 28/01/2021 10:59

StarryEyeSurprise, I don't think anyone on this thread is particularly arguing the UK govt have made a great job of dealing with the impact of covid. TBH I don't think the Scottish government have really done any better. Thing is, it's doubtful Boris Johnson will be pm 10 years from now (flamin' hope not) . Independence is for ever, succeed or fail. The way the SNP are going at the moment, they're likely to shred themselves before too long - there's so much disagreement and disruption within the party, why should anyone trust the rhetoric on independence.

StarryEyeSurprise · 28/01/2021 11:00

Also, where do we think Johnson is visiting today in his attempt to make us all grateful for having him in charge?
A factory in Moray again? Random hut in the middle of nowhere like May? Shetland or other place near newly discovered oil fields aka Cameron? Will he brave a hospital? I'm guessing he might since we're in lockdown.

annabelindajane · 28/01/2021 11:03

Yes please explain astroturfing, thank you . Have to give in and ask😂

Great to see all the chats and I agree the majority get on with it and it’s minorities that by way of being a minority have the issues.

There’s too much news and social media .

Graffitiqueen · 28/01/2021 11:07

Why is it so hard for some people to grasp that it's possible to be both critics of Scot Gov and UK Gov? Hmm

Jodri · 28/01/2021 11:09

@StarryEyeSurprise it’s unforgivable that the U.K. borders were not closed at the start of this pandemic.

The only reason i can see is that the aviation industry has a lot of influence within the government. They must lobby hard.
I suppose if Scotland were an independent country then the decision would fall on the Scot.gov and they would be accountable to the actions they’d take.
However, considering they are in support of a third runway at Heathrow and were criticised by friends of the Earth for setting aviation targets too low but claiming success reaching them, I’m not so sure.

On Erasmus anecdotally all my dd flat mates have applied for a year abroad next year. None are language students, want to go where lectures are in English and all are EU students.

StarryEyeSurprise · 28/01/2021 12:09

I think you're right Jodri, re the aviation industry having close ties to the Tories. Sad what we've all had to endure because of it although I know I'm one of the luckier ones as I have a job and haven't lost a loved one.

StarryEyeSurprise · 28/01/2021 12:10

I'm hearing he's at the Southern. The man has no shame.

annabelindajane · 28/01/2021 12:32

Perhaps walk in the shoes of all the pilots , engineers, cabin crew and general airport services to be a little more sympathetic as to why borders haven’t up until now been completely closed. Also London is a hub , places like Australia and NZ are not . Governments having to juggle like crazy . Don’t think any of us have a clue what it’s like being in the driving seat and I include all decision makers all round the world . One thing for sure is we will be in a better position when the next pandemic comes .

anon444877 · 28/01/2021 12:47

it's easy to say NS would've closed borders, but Nicola Sturgeon herself let people go on booked trips in October, that was a devolved choice. Hindsight is 20/20...

reprehensibleme · 28/01/2021 13:01

I don't think the aviation industry has close ties to the Tories than to any other political party - it is a huge industry, employing thousands directly and indirectly. I'm pretty sure the industry lobbies all governments.

StarryEyeSurprise · 28/01/2021 13:15

@anon444877

That was only travelling within Scotland though, and only if people had already booked.

I really feel like it would be appropriate to have a day of mourning or the 100,000 souls who have lost their lives.

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 28/01/2021 13:18

@reprehensibleme

So if someone dares to disagree they are astroturfing....... no wonder the SNP and Yes campaign appeared to be a bit Stepford. This is my bloody country too, thanks, and just because I don’t believe in your vision of the sunny uplands doesn’t mean my opinion’s any less valid.
