Could The PM just dissolve the Scottish Parliament?

In light of what Boris Johnson has said last night about devolution being a disaster, and concerns over the internal market bill there has been a lot of talk and suspicion that he intends a massive power grab from Holyrood or even to dissolve the Scottish Parliament.

This seems unthinkable to me as the people of Scotland voted for devolution by a huge majority. Do people believe this could actually happen?

I honestly don't know but I'm worried about how much damage he'll try to do before he finally fucks off.

I don't think he gives a single fuck about representation and the democratic process.

Icecreamscooper · 17/11/2020 10:38

@IncludeWomenInTheSequel I think you’re right he doesn’t care about democracy or representation, I wonder how far he will go, and who is pulling his strings?

If he shuts down Holyrood then I’m guess Stormont and Senedd Cymru would be shutdown also? I can’t imagine direct rule in NI would be very helpful at maintaining the gfa.

PaperTowels · 17/11/2020 10:41

Lol, he just spouted without thinking, as per.

He's not going to shut anything down Grin

Icecreamscooper · 17/11/2020 10:55

@PaperTowels but it’s not just what he said last night although that does highlight his contempt for the Scots and democracy. It’s the power grab that is implicit in the IMB, it’s Brexit, it’s the looming Scottish elections and surge in support for independence. No UK PM wants to preside over the break up of the Union, it would be seen as an utter failure and would be their over riding legacy. Not long ago we were being told Boris and the tori’s would love bomb Scotland, that did last and now we hear talk like this? Not to mention the UK government hub in Edinburgh, something is afoot.

PaperTowels · 17/11/2020 10:56

He can't "shut down" anything. He would have to get it through Parliament.

Icecreamscooper · 17/11/2020 11:04

He has a huge majority in Parliament to get it through, don’t forget how happily this government were to break laws when it suits them.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 17/11/2020 11:04

Just as well he doesn't have a majority then Hmm

I agree he's an inveterate spouter of nonsense, but this has to be seen in the context of the IMB.

PaperTowels · 17/11/2020 11:06

Well you can all say he will do blah and blah, I'm telling you that he won't "shut down" any devolved parliament.

Am now hiding this thread, so as not to keep repeating myself Smile

Icecreamscooper · 17/11/2020 11:09

Out of your depth more like!

Brilliant @PaperTowels were you on your school's debate team by any chance?!

MrsMiaWallis · 17/11/2020 11:33

Of course he's not going to shut down the Scottish Parliament 🙄

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 17/11/2020 11:42

Never ever? There's no possibility?

It would be a dramatic draconian move, but I don't think he's incapable of those.

Tbh I think he'll be gone long before he implements anything of the sort, but we don't know who will come next that's a better operator with more time on their hands post-Pandemic.

PaperTowels · 17/11/2020 11:46

Yes, that'll be it Hmm
Callisto1 · 17/11/2020 11:47

If he wouldn't be such a disaster of a useless PM then independence would be less popular...
Maybe he should think before he speaks for once!

PaperTowels · 17/11/2020 11:48

@IncludeWomenInTheSequel

Brilliant *@PaperTowels* were you on your school's debate team by any chance?!
I was actually. Which is why I can see that it's pointless continuing this debate on my side, as I have said all I need to and there's no need to develop my point.

I was dragged back into this thread by being @ed, so please don't! Smile

Well he definitely has played into SNP hands with his indisciplined behaviour for sure.
WaxOnFeckOff · 17/11/2020 12:02

So new poster comes on with a goady post to stir up Scotsnet from an independence perspective - i'll give it a miss thanks.

Bytheloch · 17/11/2020 12:07

Ask yourself, why have the media picked up on this story so much🤔 Holyrood V Westminster, pay per view fight.
I’m not defending Boris, but to even worry that he could just shut down Holyrood is laughable. He really can’t. But he doesn’t have to like the devolved arrangement or the personalities contained within it, ditto in reverse from here, their contempt for Westminster is obvious. Our dear FM can give as good as she gets, ditto Blackford who doesn’t speak on behalf of us all as a Westminster SNP MP, yet he appears to believe he does.

Boris could have framed it better though, it’s a bit of a ball ache for the Scottish conservatives to respond appropriately but hey, that’s Boris🤷‍♀️

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 17/11/2020 12:08

How is discussing the news stirring Scotsnet up, as if we are a little unionist hive mind?

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 17/11/2020 12:12

No, he won't shut down the Scottish Parliament.

I'm as annoyed as anyone about yet another unthinking blunder from Boris Johnson, but to give him the benefit of the doubt, if he was trying to say (with typical incompetence) that the SNP have misused the powers of devolution to further a separatist agenda and largely neglected their actual responsibilities, there might be some truth in that.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 17/11/2020 12:12

I don't think anyone is under the illusion that he can just clap his hands and make it so. But he can make it part of a long-term political strategy.

WaxOnFeckOff · 17/11/2020 12:12

Not really, OP asked a question. People answered and then they accused them of not wanting to debate.

Not wanting to enter into a debate on here with someone with no posting history who decides to start a fight isn't my thing at the moment given recent activities.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 17/11/2020 12:18

Agree. What a take from a guy who has used Covid to enrich his already-rich friends though, while tens of thousands of people died.
Sheogorath · 17/11/2020 12:23

But you still care enough to post multiple times, as usual. Hardly giving it a miss.
