Supposed to be going on short holiday to England next weekend.

Have just watched NS talking about possibility of closing the (non existent) border between Scotland and Enland if the 'risk' goes up

Should I be concerned/cancelling ?

Yes wales did very briefly. To dissuade English tourists I believe.

Enforcement has always been an issue for everything relating to covid.

Fannies 🤣 lovely.

MumofHunter · 12/07/2020 15:17

"The UK is politically and economically a country with one head of state. The borders are little more than county borders."

What planet are you on? Scotland and England are polar opposites politically.

@sonicbook I most definitely do not like BJ or think he’s handled things well. I think NS is a better communicator, very intelligent and is probably herself quite competent, but as a whole I think the Scottish government are not doing a good job. At times they seem very amateurish, like the blended learning nonsense or not providing the correct info to get access to the home office information they need to monitor people coming in from abroad (the most recent examples but there are many more). They also seem very preoccupied with independence, to everyone’s detriment. As most of the things that affect my daily life are devolved, like health and education, I pay more attention to what the Scottish government does or doesn’t do. I am Scottish; live, work and raise a family here so I think I have a right to speak up when I think things aren’t being run well. I also see myself as British and am proud to be part of the U.K. This is bigger than the current occupant of No. 10, who is a buffoon, but is not forever.

sonicbook · 12/07/2020 15:23

Maybe yours but not mine. I cannot wait for independence. I'm far more concerned that we are being dragged out of Europe against our will. In fact I'm annoyed that covid has pushed independence to the side.

DubaiDublin73 · 12/07/2020 15:25

Well - aren't you a little ray of sunshine BYBB.

MumofHunter · 12/07/2020 15:28

"The SNP and their supporters do not 'own' Scotland, nor do they own the saltire. Disagreeing with a blatantly racist, anglophobic, shit stirring first minister does not mean we hate Scotland. Yes I stand by all of that."

Utter BS. Give me one example of the FM being racist. Just one. Newsflash- you can't. Because she isn't.

I can give you several examples of the leader of the union being racist.

MumofHunter · 12/07/2020 15:36

No one is talking about putting the army on the border. Time and time again I'm blown away by unionists utter detachment from reality.

pandafunfactory · 12/07/2020 15:47

I think Nicola needs to dial it back a bit. Plenty of Scots are desperate for tourism to resume so they can salvage what's left of the season. If she keeps freaking people out they won't travel even if they can.

sonicbook · 12/07/2020 15:54

And for everyone desperate for tourism to reopen there's someone who lives in a tourist destination terrified for it to.

It's a lose lose situation.

ssd · 12/07/2020 15:54

I wonder how people on mn would feel if it was all reversed and England had tighter rules and was doing better numbers wise than Scotland, I wonder if English meters would be saying yes you can all come and visit from Scotland, we don't care..

I doubt it.

Of course we are all one country the UK , but because of our smaller population and less density, I for one wouldn't mind closing at the border and seeing how it goes until England gets more of a grip on it.

sonicbook · 12/07/2020 15:54

@MumofHunter sadly I don't think it's a detachment from reality it's a very deliberate obtuseness

ssd · 12/07/2020 15:56

And this isn't an snp, shortbread tin thing, it's a health thing.

sonicbook · 12/07/2020 15:57

@ssd absolutely.

YonBonnieBanks · 12/07/2020 15:57

newsflash - I can. All the failures to rule out quarantine for the English, and emphasis on a 'cross border' spike. Racist anti English tweets from SNP councillors and members are repeatedly ignored. And then there's Devi's tweet calling unionists anti-scottish.

This is a good article: www.spectator.co.uk/article/the-snp-has-an-anglophobia-problem

It also points out that:

"The three most senior members of the present Conservative cabinet – Chancellor, Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary – were born respectively to an immigrant Muslim, Hindu and (part) Jewish family."

The SNP have Humza Yusaf. That's it.

Yet you use BJs historic comments as your defense. He appears to have learned from it. Nicola just carries on.

YonBonnieBanks · 12/07/2020 16:00

and when all the scots holiday makers come back from Greece or where ever with Covid 19, will you still say close the border to England?
YonBonnieBanks · 12/07/2020 16:01

@MumofHunter

No one is talking about putting the army on the border. Time and time again I'm blown away by unionists utter detachment from reality.
how do you propose its done then? Because she doesn't have the powers. She's deliberately shit stirring.
ssd · 12/07/2020 16:18

@YonBonnieBanks anyone coming back should self isolate for 14 days

museumum · 12/07/2020 16:25

Oh ffs! Andres marr fried to pin her into saying something about closing borders. She replied that local travel restrictions were reasonably being used between states in Australia and within the state of NY in the US. Obviously there’s also Leicester as an example. She will not rule our doing similar.
It’s nothing to do with stationing an army on an international border - that’s ridiculous hyperbole. Scotland has devolved control of public health and should do what they think best preserves public health.

YonBonnieBanks · 12/07/2020 16:43

I know that @ssd my point is that Scots can catch the virus from other places, and not just another part of the UK.

To compare Scotland to a US or Australian state is stupid because again their powers are different

MumofHunter · 12/07/2020 16:46

Yes ssd - it's fairly obvious YonBonnie that people would be asked to self isolate for 24 days. The same as Spanish people currently need to do coming here. So racist (!)

Also the leading scientist or 'Devi' as you call her is a mixed race American. She's not racist. Xenophobe. Or whatever you're implying.

Again, completely detached from reality.

MumofHunter · 12/07/2020 16:46

I'm actually lolling 🤣

Firstly Boris has learned? What evidence do you have for this?

Secondly are you judging a governments attitude to immigration on how many actually are descended from immigrants? How about judging them on how they treat immigrants? Last time I noticed Priti Patel was trying to deport a 12 year old at great risk of FGM

what are you smoking?

dementedma · 12/07/2020 16:53

Defence is not devolved so SNP has no mandate or power to use UK troops in any way whatsoever on borders or anything else. The Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force belong to the UK govt, and cannot be deployed by the devolved nations.

sonicbook · 12/07/2020 16:59

We escalated to the army pretty quickly here.

You would hope if Scotland asked, just as Wales did, for people not to cross the border for health reasons they would do it.

Most folk are reasonable.

MumofHunter · 12/07/2020 17:18

Sonicbook I was having a good laugh at that too. I'll be sure to tell my SNP voting, born in England, husband that NS is a racist when he gets in. Will need to change his trousers right enough, after he p*sses himself laughing.

And now we're back to the the Scottish Government deploying the army.

I honestly didn't know anyone thought like this until I joined mumsnet. What
