CV in Scotland

LizzieMacQueen · 05/03/2020 09:20

(This probably will get moved to the CV topic but thought I'd start one in Scotsnet anyway).

Does anyone have info as to where the Scottish cases are and whether these are 'community gained' or direct exposure from a Cat 1/2 place.

Any thoughts on the impact for our youngsters due to sit SQA exams next month?

My DS is in his highers year. 2 emails from school last week suggesting self isolation for kids returning from Italian holidays in half term but quiet since then.

There is so much talk on mumsnet about boris’s plans for Coronavirus. How much different do we expect Nicola sturgeon will be? Boris has said (allegedly) that new laws will be brought in to force schools to stay open. The Scottish newspapers seem to be saying this morning that schools may close. I personally would quite like to take the children out of school as it seems unnecessary risk having them there as I am a sahm. I don’t want to be part of the plan to create herd immunity (which may well be flawed)

JKScot4 · 15/03/2020 12:53

We need to think rationally, closing schools then has a huge effect on NHS, care homes as frontline staff would be without childcare.
Also how will small businesses, self employed survive?
This isn’t just a middle class concern.

Minesabecks · 15/03/2020 12:54

Who has said this is a middle class concern? Confused

JKScot4 · 15/03/2020 13:36

The various posts on MN scorning ppl who aren’t immediately able to work from home/isolate due to finances/childcare, not everyone has savings and jobs that can be from home.
When I pointed out that low income ppl can’t be at home with kids for weeks/months I was told these ppl were greedy and selfish!!
This is an arrogant attitude about it all.

Double3xposure · 15/03/2020 16:33

I’ve seen similar posts @JKScot4. People seem to imagine that they can stay at home on full pay spending quality time with their family. While the bin men , delivery drivers, warehouse staff, retail staff and everyone who works in the emergency services and untilitied will stay at work.

While the faeries look after their kids / granny of course.

Lots of talk of “ mortgage holidays “ with no understanding that many rent Privately. And are on zero hours contracts or are “ self employed “.

I’ve seen a glut of adverts on Facebook today from Airbnb owners suddenly “offering” their flats for several months due to non-bookings. Edinburgh is saturated with these holiday lets which has reduced availability for anyone hoping to rent something reasonable long term. Feel quite angry that now tourists aren’t coming they are offering this opportunity to those they are pricing out of the market. Of course, they want any tenant taking the property to be out in time for the festival. CFs Angry

@WaxOnFeckOff

Your son will no doubt have seen that Strathclyde uni have today suspended all face to face teaching. Classes will be online from tomorrow .

I think Nicola will close the schools in the next couple of weeks and not give a toss about what the UK gov are
or are not doing
Hopefully provision will be in place for children of essential workers

Clangus00 · 15/03/2020 17:42

SEN school in Kilmarnock closed tomorrow & Tuesday for deep cleaning.

WaxOnFeckOff · 15/03/2020 17:48

Thanks Double - CS department had already decided that so knew he wasn't due in.

GlassOfProsecco · 15/03/2020 17:55

@LoopyGremlin - I think we are on the same FB group - I have seen the posts too. I can't feel much sympathy for the AirBnB owners - it has totally ruined Edinburgh.

But I know many friends & family who are self-employed in the tourism industry & they have no income coming in - it's extremely worrying.

LoopyGremlin · 15/03/2020 18:10

@GlassOfProsecco

Absolutely. Feel enormous sympathy for businesses decimated by the loss of the tourism trade. My husband is self employed, although not in tourist trade, and it is a worrying time. But the crass wording of the Airbnb hosts who would like to offer people somewhere to stay only now that the tourist tap has turned off just got my hackles up. House prices are out of control and many of my younger teaching colleagues struggle to secure affordable lets as short term rents are so high so I have very little sympathy for these ‘hosts’. Why not rent them out to long term residents all the time and not just now? Anyway...rant over!

GlassOfProsecco · 15/03/2020 18:14

Oh I so agree with you! And what annoyed me was the owners offering the flats for 3-4 month's rental ie until August, hoping that the Festival will go ahead.

And I bet they are not registered LL's, with proper safety checks or PRT's in place either. Grrr.

Lidlfix · 15/03/2020 18:58

Dunblane High School closed tomorrow for Deep clean. Stirling Council instructed all staff with underlying health conditions and pregnancy to work from hone.

celtiethree · 15/03/2020 19:06

Council statement re Dunblane HS is that it is closed until further notice. Will be interesting to see if it reopens before Easter.

On a different note it’s vvvvv annoying they thus thread has been moved out of Scotsnet.

Lidlfix · 15/03/2020 19:10

Yep I agree was lost till I traced it in "threads I am on". Closed for a deep clean/- wonderfully vague...

LizzieMacQueen · 15/03/2020 19:12

@mnhq. Please reinstate this in Scotsnet.

It is a really useful source because our Schools operate such a different exam schedule.

It will get list in the general coronavirus topic.

LizzieMacQueen · 15/03/2020 19:12

@mnhq. That should have said lost

OP posts:
StoorieHoose · 15/03/2020 19:14

I agree with the Op @mnhq move it back to Scotsnet

WaxOnFeckOff · 15/03/2020 19:29

Yes, if we'd wanted this in the CV topic it would have been posted there. Scotsnet is the equivalent of our local page.

I currently have a mild temperature and a new persistent dry cough so I am now working at home as from tomorrow too.

GlassOfProsecco · 15/03/2020 19:39

One of my colleagues has phoned in for being off tomorrow- her DS in S1 has a new cough so she'll need to be off too as can't rely on elderly relatives for childcare.

And so it begins......

GlassOfProsecco · 15/03/2020 20:00

(I should add that I'm NHS so the staffing pressures are now starting - not that we are ever fully staffed)

Lidlfix · 15/03/2020 20:26

Mumsnet please listen - Health Care is a devolved issue for Scotland. Education is a devolved issue also. Our tiny local thread is lost in the myriad of others in the CV board. We are a small community many of us only post in Scotsnet.

Personally I make visits to The Staff room as it is also specific and Style and Beauty as I have need of both.

Posters with Scottish health or education concerns due to Corona will never find us in the main board.

WaxOnFeckOff · 15/03/2020 20:33

Agree totally Lidl. NHS Scotland guidance could be different.

Posting in Scotsnet is like posting on our local forum given that our population is about the same size as greater London (I think).

We have quite a group of regular posters who now feel like family and we don't want our thread which is very specific to Scotland to get lost. Please move it back. @mnhq
