Nat 5/Highers etc - Anyone getting ready with their S4 - S6 dc?

weegiemum · 05/04/2016 15:39

My dd1 is in s4 and about to sit 8 Nat5s. I don't know who is more wound up about it - her or me! (and I'm a teacher!!).

Wondered if there's anyone else out there to hold hands with?

DD is sitting English, Maths, Ghaidlig (Gaelic native speaker), French, History, Art & Design, Physics and Design & Manufacture. First is English on 5th May.

dS2 has woken up with a sore throat and painful sinuses, has caught manflu from DH! Luckily he has nearly a week to recover before his last exam, phew.

Kr1stina · 22/05/2016 14:50

How's your son today wiggly ?

wigglybeezer · 22/05/2016 17:18

Much better thanks, back to revising tomorrow.

Kr1stina · 22/05/2016 21:41

That's good

OneMagnumisneverenough · 22/05/2016 21:54

glad to hear that wiggly. Who do we have still doing exams this week?

DS1 has Physics on Tuesday and Computing on Friday - he's spent today reorganising (note I didn't mention tidying) his desk so that he can get a 3 screen set-up Hmm after all that he is back to using only two as the third was making things laggy...

maybe he'll do some study tomorrow.

Groovee · 22/05/2016 22:12

Dd's poor friend has her exams Mon/Tues/Wed!

Dd has Wednesday pm for drama. Thursday we hope the braces come off.

prettybird · 22/05/2016 23:11

Glad your ds is feeling a bit better wigglybeezer

Ds has given up on doing past papers for his Physics exam and instead had been writing a sheet per subject of the equations and principles he needs to know. He says most of the marks will come from the Maths he'll need to do so he's confident about that.

I'd better check how he's doing with his Computing Science. He's not as confident about that - but he's not planning on taking it forward next year, so isn't too bothered.

unlucky83 · 22/05/2016 23:27

Glad History went well for everyone!
I had a minor crisis on Fri - DD still hadn't done all her drama coursework - she said it had to be in before the exam but was being very vague. I got a phone call from the head of drama telling me it had to be sent away that day...
Not only had DD not finished it (she had to redo something as she had done the wrong thing) but she had also left it at home and gone into school to mess around Sad
When I finally got her to answer her phone and after several emails going back and forth with her drama teacher they gave her one new booklet and I had to take the other ones into school for her (after I had been into my part time work) ...a 22 mile round trip.
Thankfully she just has her drama exam left - on Wed- but says she can't revise for that Hmm - with the standard of her coursework and the fact that she messed up her first play (forgot her lines...) etc etc I am pretty sure she will fail anyway.
I have spent the last year persuading her to do coursework or trying to get her to revise ...I get her in a reasonable communicative mood - and feel a bit lost as I have nothing to nag her about Smile I can just talk to talk her without an ulterior motive!!! It feels so odd ....

Groovee · 23/05/2016 08:55

Hugs Unlucky. Dd says she can't revise for drama either as she's done the hard bits.

My friend's kids seem to have started getting certificates from SQA with credits and levels on it.

prettybird · 23/05/2016 12:01

How stressful for you unlucky83 - but at least what can be done, has been done. Smile

The end is in sight! Grin

weegiemum · 23/05/2016 15:55

We have 3 exams in 3 days next week on Tues/Wed/Thurs, but dd1 isn't too worried - 2 of them are mainly on coursework and she knows her stuff for the exams, and she's really good at gaelic so that is quite straightforward.

About to give up on physics. She's gone for a bath. Pretty stressed over it, just looking forward to it being over now!

It's a shame for those with them clustered together :(

And that's a shame for your DD too unlucky.

While you are all here, can I ask a bit of a stupid question re Child Benefit? I've had a letter thorough for DS1 as he'll be 16 in the summer. I've filled in the form to say that he is staying on at school. It then asks when he will finish the course or take his final exams - is that just for 5th year and do I just put June 2017 as we don't have any dates yet for next year and will they then send me another letter next year? I fully believe that he will stay on for 6th year and therefore it will be June 2018 when he finishes so do I put that instead? Very confused Confused

prettybird · 23/05/2016 19:26

I would've thought if you're expecting him to do 6th year, you put that down. The onus would then be on you to declare it if he leaves earlier.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 23/05/2016 19:33

That's what i was thinking as I have no idea if they will contact me again and I presume it will be harder to get it restarted than to stop it.

Groovee · 23/05/2016 21:20

I put 05/2018 on my form as Dd plans to stay on for 6th year.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 23/05/2016 21:38

Some of the Nat 5s have gone on until June but i've just plugged in what it's likely that he would do in 6th year and the last one would still be in May so I'll probably put May 2018. I guess it's just more confusing because they ask you which course they are doing so this year it will be Highers but they only last a year - it'll likely be more straightforward if they are doing a two year course like A levels.

prettybird · 23/05/2016 22:03

Haven't had any form yet, but as ds' birthday is in September, that might explain why. Cut off seems to be 31st August.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 23/05/2016 22:13

DS1 is July. I'll be getting the same next year then for DS2 as he is August.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 24/05/2016 08:43

Last one for ds today...AdvHIgher Physics...he seems a lot more settled since the chemistry one last week, was talking to dh about the maths debacle, dh said he was still cross wth himself but seemed okay enough.

He's now pondering passports and some jaunting I think, but will need to get some funds behind himself, so is hoping his usual summer job comes through.

I know I'll be having a great big "raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrr" this evening!!

rogueantimatter · 24/05/2016 09:23

Higher physics for DS here this morning. His final exam too. Yesss. Off until june 6th.

His Dsis is coming home next week for the summer with all her stuff; crockery, fairy lights, clothes, heater, clothes, books, large musical instrument, ornaments, more fairy lights, clothes, sandwich toaster, kettle, pots and pans, clothes etc so he must do some serious de-cluttering of his room as DD's bedroom is tiny and our house is quite small.

He is going to have a very busy sixth year regardless of his results as he hasn't ruled out music, so AH music + AH maths and physics hopefully. And extra music. I don't know what he'll do if the AH physics class is full. Higher Eng science would be good but his school doesn't do it. I heard of someone who didn't get a place in an AH class in DS' school owing to his predicted grade for his higher who went on to get an A in the subject then couldn't do it at AH level as the class was full. He studied a very similar subject at uni so was disadvantaged by his school's lack of provision for him.

But that's getting ahead of myself.

OneMagnum (still love your name btw - it makes me laugh every time I read it) I'd put the end of june on the form for your DS - he'll still technically be a pupil of his school until the summer holidays after his final exams.

prettybird · 24/05/2016 09:30

Good luck to everyone doing Physics today. I know that there's a wide range of altitudes - so I hope that they get what they're hoping for and rewarded for their work. Smile

weegiemum · 24/05/2016 09:56

yes, good luck to all for today - dd1 just wants never to do physics again!

Her 3 next week aren't too bad so she'll have a bit of time off over the weekend (with it being the long weekend too her best friend in S3 will also be off). Then its Art on Tuesday (she reckons she already has an A from her coursework which is something like 80% of the mark), Wednesday is Gaelic (native speakers) which she's really good at (its not like the other languages exams, more like English) and then Design and Manufacture on Thursday morning. We're going out for lunch and shopping for the school trip to Barcelona in the afternoon that day!

Yes good luck to all for today - I suspect DS is quite looking forward to todays Hmm

Computing on Friday and I think the one he is least confident in which is Art.

And thanks rouge I bought a box of 8 on offer the other day. We all had one each, then I had my 2nd one - there are 3 left in the freezer which are taunting me but don't belong to me. If I sneak in another box of 8 then technically I could eat the 3 that are there today and another 4 and nobody would know right?! - Bucket day today too so the wrappers and box could be gone....:o

I'm thinking 7 might be a bit much even for me and I'm too much of a cheapskate to buy the box of 3 for nearly the same price as 8.

weegiemum · 24/05/2016 12:04

I'm always about if Magnums need sharing!

I've resisted the urge...go me!

Anyone been involved in the schools threat today? - I've heard nothing so intending taking DS up to school soon.
