My dd is getting one of those horrible big earrings that look like sink plungers - help

She is 15.3. She is going out with a nice lad, quiet & well-mannered but he has a bit of a rebellious streak, and he has one of those black earrings about the size of a penny, & the hole in his ear is that big, so I'm told. Then DS told me that DD is getting one too. I didn't believe it because she loves fashion, loves Audrey Hepburn, is small & dainty, but obviously has listened to the bf. Anyway, I asked her, & she tried to hide her earrings, & said she was going up one size in one ear at the moment, & how if she took it out it would go back to a normal sized hole, but she's going to keep it & maybe make it a bit bigger.

This has come as a big shock to me. I told her it looks OK on boys but not girls, it'd look awful with nice clothes etc. & now she's not talking to me.

Am I over-reacting? Has anyone got any advice?

Just tell her you think they look nice and would like one too so you can go together. This will put her off.

BananaFruitBat · 11/02/2009 22:00

Tell her they're great and you're thinking of getting some too.

There's NO WAY I'd have got anything if I thought my mum was going to do the same when I was in my teens!

Got to be worth a try.

BananaFruitBat · 11/02/2009 22:01

Oops. x-post!

tearinghairout · 11/02/2009 22:02

Lol, didn't hink of using reverse psychology. A bit late for that, I think

Does anyone know how long you can leave in the next size up before it WON'T go back to normal size?

She has long hair, btw, that covers her ears, so I don't know how long she's had this.

it won't go back though, i wore very heavy earrings as a teen and the hole has stretched.

i heard that it is possible to get a stitch, but apparently it doesn't work once the piercing is established and of course stretching it just reinforces it.

i wanted to get my nose pierced around that age (was in 80s before it was so prevalent) and my mum just looked at me and said "i don't think that would be a very good idea". i didn't get it done. my mum was not big on unnecessary advice.

LynetteScavo · 11/02/2009 22:04

You are not over reacting!

Does she really want to be left with a massive hole?

Ask her if she really wants to be weariing it on her wedding day.

scrooged · 11/02/2009 22:05

Just sit down with her, box of chocolates and a movie, then start talking about all the things you never did as a teenager, then say you always wanted a ear ring. Say you felt jealous of her that she could yet you were not allowed. Then tell her you'd love to go with her so you can have one too. You'd love to be a rebel wouldn't you!

4andnotout · 11/02/2009 22:05

My brother and sister both have these stretching piercing (i stuck to bog standard ) My sisters got big enough to pass a pencil through yet has gone back to normal. The stretching itself is fairly painful so maybe that will put her off?

scrooged · 11/02/2009 22:06

Ohh, she's got one. Oh. Ask her to go with you whilst you have one put in.

BlueSapphire77 · 11/02/2009 22:07

Right. Does she take it out at all.

Cruel i know but if she does, or even if she doesn't, when she's asleep or something, or if she does, lay your hands on it/or her ear if she doesn't take it out, and put chilli essence or sauce on it or rub a chilli seed on the bloody thing.

No long lasting ill effects but it will hurt like fk and she'll think she is allergic/has an infection.

Job done.

Also chilli rubbed in pants frightens the hell out of naughty hubbies but thats a whole other thread

fishie · 11/02/2009 22:07

also i really hate those big holes. they make me worry, what are they for? is someone going to stick a chipolata in? are they are sort of fetishistic?

could some young thing come and explain them please.

Desiderata · 11/02/2009 22:08

Just tell her it looks vile and stop giving her tea.

And tell her to never take advice from a guy with a small dick.

ravenAK · 11/02/2009 22:09

There is a chap who gets my bus who has ENORMOUS flesh tunnels, at least 2cm diameter.

Unfortunately, he also obviously has a job where he's not allowed to wear the earrings, so he has big dangly floppy loops of earlobe.

Not a good look!

Point out that it'll look like that if she gets sick of it AFTER it's healed. Also, you can I think get 'false' flesh plug earrings - thick post front & back, ordinary post which actually goes through ear.

LoveSongBirdSeed · 11/02/2009 22:09

it won't just be a massive hole, when she takes the earing out, it will hang down like fanjo

tearinghairout · 11/02/2009 22:10

Scrooged - it seems that you just keep getting bigger & bigger earrings rather than having one 'put in'. She's on Size 2, which is presumably next size up from normal.

4andnotout - thank you, that is good to hear.

I was worried about tattoos - I never predicted this!

tearinghairout · 11/02/2009 22:12

Oh blimey I feel sick. Was the fanjo reference.

There is defo something of the fetish about it, yes. (shudder)

OP posts:
LoveSongBirdSeed · 11/02/2009 22:13

tell her thats what her ears will look like.

ravenAK · 11/02/2009 22:15

These as a compromise?

fake flesh plugs

tearinghairout · 11/02/2009 22:15

BlueSapphire, thanks for some concrete advice. I don't think she does take it out but I'll be ready with the chilli sauce if she does

BananaFruitBat · 11/02/2009 22:18

See if you can find some really vile pictures on the internet to show her.

LoveSongBirdSeed · 11/02/2009 22:20
