Marriage and Kids with the love of your life/soul mate OR NOT?

How many of you out there know you have settled down with the love of your life or was there someone else before that was probably the one? Have you settled for second or even third best? Do you wish life had turned out differently?

OP posts:

"worn out by sexual congress"

Actually - strictly technically, as opposed to merely technically , it means exhausted by producing the effects of sexual congress

So I guess it describes us all rather more exactly now than in our salad days

Bink · 30/10/2008 14:00

it would be clearer if I'd said "consequences" rather than "effects", wouldn't it?

motherinferior · 30/10/2008 14:01

Our wilted days, when we are yellow in judgement?

Kewcumber · 30/10/2008 14:03

no-one has reassured me that my soul mate is NOT a mongolian goat herder

no hope for me then...

phantasmagoria · 30/10/2008 14:03

Thank you. I am enlightened, I think - but confused by "effects". Are the effects knickers on the floor, mussed up hair, and rumpled sheets, or are they more cellular, physical, physiological, or emotional ones?

soz for hijack, it feels important to me, and probably relevant to the soul mate thang in some REALLY abstract way.

phantasmagoria · 30/10/2008 14:04

where is that quote from MI?

(Phanta has a yen to LEARN today.)

Bink · 30/10/2008 14:05

Antony & Cleo
important reading for the mature but not yet over it

re your qu below - presumably a cross-post as I did think there was ambiguity & tried to sort it subsequently

Bink · 30/10/2008 14:06

except MI was being adaptively witty - doesn't actually say yellow or wilted

phantasmagoria · 30/10/2008 14:07

Ah, consequences, not effects.

So up the duff, sticky, knackered, diseased, blissed out, annoyed, flushed - all these count?

Bink · 30/10/2008 14:10

The duff bit. And all the consequentials thereof - sleep deprivation heading the list I should think

motherinferior · 30/10/2008 14:10

Kew, a literate soulful goat herd?

I must re-read A&C. I saw a deaths notice once in the Guardian which said 'now boast thee, death, in thy dominion lies/A lass unparallel'd' and thought that was marvellous.

motherinferior · 30/10/2008 14:12

And the general knackeredness to the physical frame. I think it's Nature's Way of ensuring monogamy, personally; I can't imagine exposing my stretchmarks and general rumpliness to anyone new.

motherinferior · 30/10/2008 14:14

And it's possession not dominion. Dominion completely different, it's what death doesn't have, isn't it. Serves me right for showing off .

Bink · 30/10/2008 14:16

Oh you are FUNNY! I had to stretch my brain about the dominion thing (bit like Pilates y'know)

Lurcio · 30/10/2008 14:18

Kew I think my soulmate may be goat hearding too!
I thought I had met the love of my life- DD's Daddy, but evidently he didn't feel the same way .
I am beginning to realise, that although I felt totally differently about him than any man I'd ever been with, that didn't make him 'the one'.
I hope that eventually there will be someone out there that fits me, but I'm not in any desperate hurry...

OrmIrian · 30/10/2008 14:18

MI - I've often thought that. About baby-wear-and-tear enforcing monogamy. Apart from lack of time and opportunity, I'd have to find a blind bloke, or one who was used to being with a much much older woman (say about 80?), or someone who only made love with the lights off. By the time I ascertained all that he'd be off.

motherinferior · 30/10/2008 14:24

Or perhaps had a penchant for rubber suits. I could quite see the advantage of a rubber suit now.
