How do I deal with this?

I am so cross - mainly with myself. I divorced ten years ago and have DS11. Apart from a few dates with someone over three years ago, I have been single and although I have missed the company of someone, things have been good. I like my job, colleagues, have a good social life and now a son who has just started secondary so I am pretty busy.

I have an old school friend that I have known for 50 years! He was a year above me. We’ve stayed connected over the years, mainly on socials and have seen each other at various school reunions. I always thought what a lovely guy he was and about two months ago, we started messaging each other and are now in a pretty intense situationship, for want of a better word! I am not sure how this has happened but I am completely crazy about him. I can’t eat or sleep and it feels like pleasure and pain all in one. I can’t actually believe I am in this position. I sense that he is backing off and I am quite angry about it but mainly with myself. My equilibrium has been disturbed after all this time and I am not dealing with it very well. I don’t want to blow up at him or come across as needy - do I challenge him on where he sees this going or do I just back off, get on with my life and if he’s really interested, his actions will show me? We are both in our 50s so I know this sounds pathetic. I feel like I have fallen foul of a love-bomber and I feel like crap. He’s super-intelligent, self-aware and has a high-powered well-paid job, so this is not someone of low intellect (if that makes any difference). I’m a single Mum but earn a lot less. I don’t know why but I’m feeling so insecure and on the back foot.

What should I do?

No, no children. He said him
and his ex-wife tried but it didn’t happen.

Doesn't seem abnormal or unreasonable that he would text you more when he's on holiday and relaxing and having time to think of you, than when back and at his job which you described as 'high powered'!

This happened to me (sorta) as well after a long stint being single while 100% focused on single parenting, looking back I think it was because I had very little experience + the connection after being alone for that long was overwhelming and amazing and made me blind to what was happening, I am fully convinced a lot more than it would have normally been. Prior to this I never had much of a problem moving on from people.

Realistically the obvious course of action is to back off and let him be, but the issue is whether or not you’re strong enough to do it. It is not easy.

Newgolddream70 · 25/09/2026 15:22

Thanks @malefieldsfor understanding. Yes, I do feel strong enough although it will be hard of course. I have been through a lot worse in my life. Just feel a little sad if ‘that’s it’. I suppose I just need to see how it goes.

I definitely wouldn’t give up on such a strong connection just because he’s backed off a little - maybe it’s all a bit new for him too and he’s just wary of HIS heart being on the line after so long? Men aren’t immune to feeling anxious about throwing themselves back into the vulnerability that comes with a relationship!

As pp have said, I wouldn’t challenge anything or have some awkward convo about the future, just match his energy and and let it pan out.

The worst thing you can do is come across way too keen and scare him off if he’s genuinely just busy at work playing catch up after a week off!

Newgolddream70 · 25/09/2026 15:25

No @Lmnop22 I won’t challenge him. Thank you ☺️

I thought I would come back for anyone who’s interested! I had a lovely weekend with my friends and got back yesterday evening. The guy called me yesterday to check I had got home ok (long drive in rain) and we’ve arranged to meet up on Thursday. The messaging in the day has dropped off considerably (only heard once from him today) and because it is such a contrast to two weeks ago, I still feel uneasy about the shift. Anyway, I shall see what happens this week.

OP, when you say he saying to you that you were the one etc, what prompted that? Was it instigated by some intensity or neediness from you or was it completely unprompted?

Newgolddream70 · 28/09/2026 17:41

He was definitely the one to say it first and the conversations escalated from
there. I have not heard from him since this morning when he sent his usual good morning text. I just don’t understand it.

In reality, that level of intensity can't last forever anyway. I'd be happy to hear from someone once or twice a day tbh I can't be doing with my phone constantly pinging! And the novelty of sending/receiving constant messages saying how amazing we each thought the other were would wear thin pretty quickly.

It does feel.strange when it drops off a bit but maybe this is just back to real life? See how it goes on Thursday.

Is he at work?

I can't message anyone during the day when I'm working.

Imonmyownhere · 28/09/2026 18:03

So there's been 1 time where he hasn't messaged in the work day?

Newgolddream70 · 28/09/2026 18:17

@Imonmyownhere he isn’t working today. He just messaged me a picture of something he’s eating saying how amazing it is. I acknowledged that and asked him if he’s had a good day to which re replied he’s had a great day not doing anything apart from a few errands. I know this sounds all a bit pathetic and normally, it would give me a massive ick if someone messaged me a lot - as I said before, it’s the drop in messages and they are more chatty/friendly than what they were before. I am so close to asking him if everything is ok but I don’t want to come across as too intense.

OP posts:
Newgolddream70 · 28/09/2026 18:24

His messages are nice - not cheeky/flirty anymore

OP posts:
Imonmyownhere · 28/09/2026 18:28

He's messaged you at least but does he have a habit of not asking about you?

Newgolddream70 · 28/09/2026 18:31

@Imonmyownhere usually he asks but not today.

OP posts:
Imonmyownhere · 28/09/2026 18:34

If he did it more than once then I would be bothered about it. Be flirty with him, see what he says back.

TheSunIsAlwaysThere · 28/09/2026 18:39

If you ask him if everything is okay it will be a really bad idea.

JustGoogleIt15 · 28/09/2026 18:40

Are you saying that his flirty, sexy, love bomby type messages stopped after your time away together, when you had sex? Have I got that right?

Newgolddream70 · 28/09/2026 18:46

@JustGoogleIt15 no they continued afterwards but since we saw each other last Tuesday (and had lots of sex) his messages have tailed off. But… he has just worked 4 very long days in a row. I just feel like he’s lost interest

OP posts:
Newgolddream70 · 28/09/2026 18:47

@TheSunIsAlwaysThere why do you think it would be a bad idea?

OP posts:
Imonmyownhere · 28/09/2026 18:49

Because if he is drifting he'll drift further!! Just mirror his efforts.

Maybe he has lost interest or maybe because of work he's pulled back a bit

Rein in your excitement. See him again and see if, when he isn't working a lot, he reverts to the love bomby chat

Tbh he sounds flaky and red flaggy to me. But give him a chance to show you how he feels

If the obvious disinterest continues, bin him

Honestly sounds like he has put you on the back burner so he can have sex whenever he wants. He got what he wanted, equal lovebombing so he knew you were hooked, and now he knows little breadcrumbs will keep you hanging and grateful for any tiny drop of attention.

Two months in, do you want to still be questioning everything in another 6?

Imonmyownhere · 28/09/2026 18:54

Did you post about this the other day?
