I have had a lucky escape

Met a guy on an app in early June. Divorced with one child with shared living arrangements with ex-wife. All good. He'd broken up with his ex (not ex-wife, he's been with this woman for about 6 years until she walked out last summer 2025. I'm the first person he's been seeing since then.

I'm divorced with one child and moved to a different part of the country after escaping an abusive marriage in 2017. This is the first relationship since for me too after concentrating on my child.

All going very well and happy until the ex turned up screaming and shouting and hammering on the door saying you're seeing someone else. Turns out she's been playing games for months with him until he told her it's over and the house is going on the market in May. We never introduced our children.

She was screaming, called me a slut and a common tart and to get out of her house. To be fair he told her to calm down and go home but the evening was wrecked.

She later broke in and cut some of his clothes up and caused some other damage.

She kept calling him crying and saying she wanted him back and she'd made a mistake. It came to a head last weekend when we had concert tickets and he cancelled because she'd shown up, going on about how she's changed.

He got back to me saying he didn't know what to do. I made the decision for him. She told him I wasn't the right sort of person to settle down with as I work part time and don't own my house. That's because of my marriage breakdown and its consequences.

I'm sure it'll all end in tears. I did meet his mother briefly who seemed nice and said the ex was selfish and controlling.

I've had a lucky escape haven't I? I know men lie about crazy exes but I've seen one in action and this one is genuine.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was addicted to and feeding the drama. I mean, 6 years is a long time to stay with a ‘maniac’

I wouldn't be surprised if his ex was perfectly normal until she entered a relationship with this man. She sounds like a desperate woman who has been emotionally abused and gaslit for the entire relationship. I hope she can move on and get the help she needs away from this sociopath. You had a very lucky escape OP!

youllneverdowhatevercommonpeopledo · 24/09/2026 19:08

Sounds like he's been stringing you both along. I wouldn't bet on the fact she's 'crazy' either. He's probably manipulated her and this whole situation so much you'd have no idea.

Rumbleafteryog · 24/09/2026 19:10

e. It came to a head last weekend when we had concert tickets and he cancelled because she'd shown up, going on about how she's changed.

and they fell in to bed together, then got up and went to the concert.

Gross. Just forget about him

Boreded · 24/09/2026 19:11

Most crazy ex wives were made crazy by an asshat of an ex husband…just remember that. How many crazy women do you encounter in your regular life? Introduce a man and they’re easier to find.

Yes he did. She turned up to talk and said she wanted to stay the night but she ended up going back to wherever she lives. She also said I live too far away from him to sustain a relationship. It's 15 miles.

He probably was trying to avoid her having a meltdown but to even consider the idea is crazy.

She’s just not his problem now - it’s not his responsibility to save her anymore. Her staying the night is entirely unacceptable! You seem very easygoing but I’m glad you’ve drawn the line now

GarlicSomething · 24/09/2026 19:50

she walked out last summer 2025

Is this a typo? If not, she's been 'crazying' for 16 months and is still having detailed conversations with him, in between breaking into his house to rant & scream, destroy his property and go on concert dates with him.

I mean, it's peculiar enough if this has been going on for 3 months. You sure did dodge a bullet as he's still in this 'relationship' of spectacular drama.

No they split last summer, end of August, and she said she needed time out. Allegedly she kept calling round initially but not for the whole of the 13 months. If he's to be believed it was her stringing him along, telling him she still loved him but wasn't in love with him.

When we met he said that the house was going to be sold and the relationship was firmly over. He did arrange to view other properties some weeks ago.

The ex wasn't really discussed until the time she turned up kicking up a storm. I believed it was over. They weren't married. He was previously married to the mother of his child who has now remarried herself.

Anyway it's done now, I just wanted to process, I guess. I've not really told anyone IRL until I saw how it was going to work out. Being married to a verbally abusive man
I've avoided dating for over eight years.

I took him out for dinner for his birthday and bought a present too. Grrrr I feel a mug!

Op he was only ever very half hearted about this
and then when his ex started pushing for him to go back to her - his half hearted interest dried up completely.

Just be glad that it only wasted a couple of months of your life

It's a shame, we got on very well. He was nice and respectful. I'm now seeing him as a wuss to be honest with you.

The fact you think this was a nice and respectful man is concerning

I think that’s harsh. She seems hysterical and frightening. Men are allowed to be frightened of unstable people considering defending himself with his increased male strength would likely end very badly for him.

Agatha1989 · 25/09/2026 08:49

I don’t think you are being fair, saying this man is a wuss. He’s at the mercy of an obsessive woman and that can be scary, even for a big strapping man.

Zuve · 25/09/2026 08:56

She is a nutcase focused on him. Stay away and go cos if she starts to focus on you then it could be very stressful. You haven't seen anything yet

I have now blocked him, and when I witnessed what she was like I found her on socials to be on the safe side in order to block her. He did post pictures of the birthday dinner with me and she turned up very soon after that.

Time for some peace now.

This. Usually behind every ‘crazy ex’, there’s a narcissistic fuckwit. They often don’t realise they’re an ex, because the man will keep them hanging on, believing they’re still in a relationship.

AFigureWalks · 25/09/2026 09:54

How did she get your address?

Given you’re all very local to each other… you’ll probably see this pair out and about again playing happy families!

You don't actually know if any of the stuff you've been told is true.

Apparently the boyfriend told her a load of detail about the OP (nice of him!)

Op - can you really not see how you are blaming the ex when this was so very very obviously a disinterested man who had his heart with his ex so when she came crawling back - sadly he dumped you like a hot potato. However he’s so utterly spineless that he had to blame his ex for the fact he’s going back to her!

and you said you couldn’t block him because you’ll see him around. You won’t. So block him. Although I doubt you’ll hear from him (until the ex dumps him, again)

That response was to someone who asked if I would see them around and I was explaining why I won't. Nothing more.

As I said I had a lucky escape. He's been indiscriminate by telling her things about me and vice versa. She was absolutely out of order with her actions that I saw for myself. Neither of them covered themselves in glory.

But you had said you couldn’t block him because he was local and you’ll see him around.

Presume he’s moved back in with her. So you won’t see him around. So you could block him. Although I don’t see much need tbh

Your describing my ex

He'd play mind games to the point I almost had a breakdown

This went on for almost 2 years,him blowing hot,then cold,then hot,then cold

Turns out,I thought we where dating but he considered 'us' over within the first 6 weeks

I was his side chick (I wouldn't have gone near him if I'd known about his 'real' girlfriend)

As I walked away (when the truth came out) he was still playing games and begging for me to come back, telling me she was 'the crazy one'

She's still with him and is convinced it's me that's 'mental' 'crazy' 'controlling' 'narcissistic' and a 'psychopath'

I wasn't before I met him and I'm not when I left him

'Oddly' cough all his exs are mental/crazy/controlling/narcissistic and psychopaths

She can't see who is the link but he's not my problem anymore

Best thing I ever did was get rid
