If you were starting over now, after having had a long relationship, would you try again?

If you have been together for say, 20+ years, a) do you still like each other?
And
b) if something happened to them, would you look for another relationship when you were ready?

I am seeing a lot of people who don't seem to like their partner, but that could just be those who aren't happy are more likely to say so?
I have been with DH 30+ years, I still like him, and I love our marriage, but I would stay single is something were to happen to him/us.
I don't think I'd want to go through what it takes to start all over, even if it would be good, if that makes sense?

I wonder if people would try again, because maybe this time around they'd find what they'd hoped for the first time?
Or are most like me, and just wouldn't want to go through it all over again?

No real reason, I'm just bored in a waiting room, and wondering

I’ve been with DH for 25 years. He’s 25 years older than me and we are both ‘aged’. I can’t imagine being with anyone better. He’s kind and my everything. I realtwoukd not want to re- enter a dating sphere. Nor can I imagine a better relationship. I’d miss sex though I expect considering only in my 50s. But I’m sure that is fairly easy to come by in some way.

MintyBadgerPrincessCheese · 22/09/2026 17:18

I don't think I'd bother with it again. I'm very happy in my marriage and if anything were to happen to us, the idea of getting out there and seeing other men and doing the whole dating thing again....nah.

Shufflebumnessie · 22/09/2026 17:19

DH & I have been happily married for nearly 20 years, together for 24 years.
If, for any reason, we were no longer together, I wouldn't seek out or enter into a new relationship. I just think I've reached that point in life where I really couldn't be bothered to start a new relationship from scratch. I'd happily remain single.

pulpJarvis · 22/09/2026 17:23

I really don't think I would be arsed starting dating again, no. Got married fairly late, in my 30s - so I'd had a lot of experience of being single and quite liked most of it.

I'm late 50s now and I'd be fairly happy doing stuff on my own and building my own life. But I very much doubt I'd be out dating, or using apps etc etc.

I wouldn't rule it out - but I doubt it...

Other half - he'd be right out there again quick as a flash. He likes being in a couple.

We are both, as far as I know 😀quite happy in our relationship.

I've been with DH for 39 years. If anything happened to him, I'd not go out purposely to find a new partner, but I'd not close any doors either. I'd want to get out there and pursue new hobbies, more voluntary work, more travel, and I'd like a "companion" for days out, maybe holidays, may socialising, etc., but would be open minded as to whether that was a romantic companion or not. I'd be just as happy with a platonic male or female "companion" for a holiday/day out as I would be with a "new man". If "Mr Perfect" came along, I'd not turn him away, but he would have to be pretty close to "Mr Perfect"! I certainly won't be going on any dating apps.

moderate · 22/09/2026 17:50

I doubt I would go out looking, but I would want to socialise and if anything arose from that, I wouldn’t rule it out.

secretrocker · 22/09/2026 17:53

I know a lot of women getting divorced recently (late 40s, early 50s) and most of them have started looking again fairly quickly.
A few have said they're happy being single, but they are sleeping around.
There a a few who seem likely to stay single and be happy with it.
Horses for courses.

DewDropsAndCobWebs · 22/09/2026 18:44

I had a hard enough time navigating old style dating again, I can't imagine having to use dating apps and such

I would after enough time had passed, I’d miss the companionship and the sex. I’d be lonely and I just think it’s more fun with someone else, I think I’d be a bad mother too if I didn’t have a partner to chat to lots, I’d end up talking to myself too much ir phoning my kids just because I was lonely and be a burden to them

Didntask · 22/09/2026 18:59

Fuck, no. I'd live man free very happily. I'm happily married believe it or not 😅 but can see the benefits of being single and carefree.

FaceIt · 22/09/2026 19:07

No I don’t think I would.

Only friendship(s), going out and doing interesting things, but above all having stimulating conversation.

teaandtoastwouldbenice · 22/09/2026 19:14

I’m on the verge of ending a 25 year relationship/marriage.
I have no intention of actively seeking a new partner and even if one magically appeared, I don’t want to share a house/money/christ I’m not sure about sharing a bed all night, and certainly wouldn’t want to introduce them to my teens. Not sure many people would be queuing up for me.

beagledog · 22/09/2026 19:21

no I wouldn't I can get by appreciating my own body through masturbation my partner doesn't want sex for last 10 years so I have had to satisfy myself I have never cheated on her I have learnt to love my body

EmeraldDreams73 · 22/09/2026 19:39

No. I'm on my second marriage, and I love DH dearly but if anything happened to him I can't see myself bothering with looking for a relationship. That said, I'd want sex so I'm hoping/assuming that would be an option somehow!

dreamingofgoodhair · 22/09/2026 19:42

30+ years. I do still like him.
I won’t look for another relationship in the future if he dies / we split up.

FinallyHere · 22/09/2026 20:17

Widowed after thirty five mostly happy years.

Not cut out for dating or anything like that and can’t imagine ever sharing my living space with anyone.

However, I do miss the physical closeness….

tanoshi · 23/09/2026 07:04

Never living with anyone ever again. Don't mind dating and short term fun. FWB's and other stuff. I'm having fun and not taking life too seriously. Not bothered about outcomes IYSWIM.

Justaquestionplease · 23/09/2026 07:07

I'd try again. I couldn't live without physical affection

keepswimming38 · 23/09/2026 07:08

We’ve been together since 1997. If anything happened to him I wouldn’t date again. I doubt I would find anyone as kind and dating in your 60s must be pretty bleak. Financially I would be fine so what would be the point. I’ve got lots of friends so wouldn’t be lonely.

ChaToilLeam · 23/09/2026 07:10

20 years and mostly happy. I wouldn't seek another relationship if he were no longer around.

Oh and I forgot to say I still like DP after 30 years.

kuieib · 23/09/2026 07:51

I really don’t know. The thought of being single scares me tbh, I get so much companionship and satisfaction from my shared life with DH, I’ve been very lucky. I genuinely think I’d be so crushed I think I’d really struggle to move on and would compare every man to him. It sounds dire out there.

This.
happily married for 30+ years, definitely wouldn’t bother again. I have friends and lots of hobbies so wouldn’t feel the need for a man again.

I have sons who I can get to to the techy stuff DH currently deals with!

Macaroni46 · 23/09/2026 07:53

All those in long marriages/relationships saying they wouldn’t pursue a new partner, have you given any thought to how lonely it can be living alone?

HelpMeGetThrough · 23/09/2026 07:59

Been together 30 years and married 27 years. Had a pretty rocky time a few years ago, but that’s all sorted, so we are fine.

If I found myself on my own, I would not have another relationship. I wouldn’t lock myself away and would have a life, but would put a stop to anything potentially happening.
