Have I overreacted and ended my relationship over nothing or was I right to do so

I have been with my partner for nearly 4 years- we don’t live together as he has two school aged children (60% in his care) and I have two adult sons who live at home - he has indicated that he would want us to live together however I have raised my children and I love my sanctuary that my home is.

My ex husband of 25 years cheated on me for context.

He received a birthday card about 6 months ago from someone who wrote ‘to the love of my life’ - the card was on his bedroom and I don’t think I was meant to see it. I admit I was thrown by it, he’d never mentioned this person and was adamant he’d known her years ago, wasn’t in contact and it came out of the blue, wasn’t his fault etc and was only upstairs as that’s where he’d opened the post and he was going to throw it away. I didn’t ask him to, wasn’t shitty about it or anything

Fast forward to now. We haven’t seen each other for 2 weeks, I was away with work and then he was ill and didn’t want to pass it on. We spoke and FT all the time during this time. On Monday we FT, he had the kids and he said he had to go as needed to finish dinner and then he had to do their homework and sort baths and bed so he’d be busy but we’d speak later. Approx 30 minutes later I decided to pop round as I had something for the girls and we hadn’t seen each other in ages and he was feeling better, he’s always telling me I don’t pop in enough too. So I thought it would be a nice surprise.

I arrived to find an unknown car there, I have a key but for some reason didn’t use it, saw he had company and knocked instead. It took ages for him to open the door, I could hear movement and opening and closing of doors. He eventually opened the door but came straight out and tried to get me to go with him up the road. Honestly this was weird as hell, I asked him what was wrong and he said nothing and tried to get me to go with him, he looked panicked for want of a better word. I refused to go with and said let’s go in the house and he wouldn’t, wouldn’t tell me who was in the house or what was going on. He said that he ‘didn’t want me to get the wrong idea’ I pointed out that his behaviour, refusal to tell me anything and not letting me in were giving me the wrong idea regardless. I said that he could tell me what was going on or we were done, he just kept refusing, so eventually I said to him ‘we’re done’ and got on my car and he threw his hands up and went into the house.

Subsequent texts (I initiated) saw the same thing he has refused to tell me, said he’s ’not doing this tonight’ and that he’s not cheating and would ‘own it’ if he had etc, but still not explained jack shit.

I have since spoken to his family member who also popped round to his unexpectedly Monday, she has explained it was this same woman who sent the birthday card, he said to his family member that he ‘thinks he’s made a terrible mistake’ and explained to her that he acted the way he did as he didn’t want me to think he was cheating because of what happened with my ex. Wtaf. How he thinks I’m going to think anything else is beyond me.

According to his family member this woman is the guardian of his daughters friend and my partner used to take the kids out together - so she’s clearly not someone he’s not heard of or from for years is she. His ex wife apparently had a confrontation with this woman too years ago when they were married.

I have not heard from him since Monday night now. I’m not going mad am I? I don’t think I overreacted- he’s clearly lied to me about who she is and their relationship for months, and then to not let me in or tell me it was her just adds to it. I also think if he knows that’s how she views him he is potentially leading her on too, so he is being a prick to her too.

How could I ever trust him again? Without trust there’s little point, I think I’d go mad wondering all the time if he was doing what he said he was etc

I just feel devastated and sad and just keep crying if I think about it. I’ve told a few people but I keep hoping he will have some magic solution that will fix it all. That sounds pathetic I know.

I think I need views as to whether I have overreacted or not. Sorry if this is long and rambling

No, you didn't over react.

WallaceinAnderland · 16/09/2026 21:39

You can't trust him. It's astonishingly unlikely that he had a genuine reason for not wanting to let you into the house or let you know who was there. Also, he clearly lied about the card.

Trust your instincts and make a clean break. It's such a shame, I'm sorry this has happened to you again.

Wooldridge · 16/09/2026 21:44

No.

Clean break on everything. Try to go completely no-contact ASAP even if it kills you. Get some self-care in the diary.

In the (very, very improbable) event it's innocent he should be falling over himself to explain to you.

At the very least they're crossing boundaries, or he finds her attractive but they haven't shagged yet.

His friendship with her is clearly more important than your relationship.

DaisyChain505 · 16/09/2026 21:44

This man is not worth your time and will not change.

Lovebombednotloved · 16/09/2026 21:45

If you were reading your post as if someone else was seeking advice …..I suspect you would respond by saying ….trust your instincts and your eyes and ears. He’s messed up badly and you don’t need this nonsense in your life. You deserve better, much better.

Funkyfoxy · 16/09/2026 21:47

I think this has panned out on the way it was always going to and you should trust it. He is a liar.

Wizardonabroom · 16/09/2026 21:47

Completely the correct decision! He lied on FT and then tried to rush you away.

Why did he not happily greet you when you turned up unexpectedly and introduce you to the OW as his loving partner of 4 years... you know exactly why!

PrincessofWills · 16/09/2026 21:47

Clearly he was not being truthful and if lying is a deal breaker for you then you're done.
If you're looking for validation or justification for ending it, just have faith in your own feelings and interpretation of what was going on.

Nosdacariad · 16/09/2026 21:48

He has been shady and has not tried to make it better.

You did the right thing xxx

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 16/09/2026 21:48

If he wasn't doing anything wrong it was the ideal chance to introduce you and set your mind at rest, you did right OP

Hellohelga · 16/09/2026 21:53

God just dump him

Sweetbeansandmochi · 16/09/2026 21:54

No one who is not doing anything wrong tries to walk their long term partner up the road and not in the house.

He has not tried to contact you. He has not shown any kindness towards you.

Be glad you don’t live with him and splitting up is straightforward in a practical sense. Not emotionally, and there will be a process to go through, and you will get through it.

Garcialikeskittens · 16/09/2026 21:55

Thank you all. I know I did the right thing deep down, I’m just devastated that I got it so wrong again. I feel like a complete fool.

Those of you who said he should be going out of his way to explain or make it right are 100% right too. In our texts Monday he tried to blame me for things ending as I wasn’t as committed as he was.

I trust myself and the decision I have made, I think though I did need validation from others that aren’t my sister 😂

Theres no way it’s innocent, I didn’t play the pick me dance last time and I don’t intend to start now.

He is clearly seeing this woman. He has spun a web of lies. Why would you want to trust jim again? He isnt trust worthy.

LasVegass · 16/09/2026 22:04

It will be painful but you did the right thing. I’m sorry. I don’t see how he could come up with anything that would put this right and make you trust him again.

He can’t and deep down I know that.

I will not be contacting him again.

i think the doubt is coming because he hasn’t tried to make it right, which is what made start to wonder if I had made a mistake and treated him badly. Which is actually insane thinking

OP, it is insane thinking. Strange car in the drive, panicked look on his face, gibbering about taking a walk up the street (who even does that?), silence since. Don’t even think you’re misinterpreting all this.

Please please do not blame yourself, you didn't get 'it wrong'. You entered the relationship with trust, it's exactly what we are supposed to do - esp over 4 years. It's him who has betrayed that trust, this is on him - all of it.

Am so sorry though, rotten thing to happen to you again but this really isn't on you and relieved you're not going to put up with this, kudos. Go easy on yourself please, take care, do some nice things for yourself.

BibbityBoppityTwo · 16/09/2026 22:11

You absolutely did not overreact. This situation is clear as day. Good on you for not allowing yourself to be gaslit and getting the hell out of there. I’m so sorry you’ve been treated this way, you deserve so much better.

Lmnop22 · 16/09/2026 22:13

The ONLY reason he’s trying to usher you down the street is because the other woman in the house doesn’t know you exist.

If she knew about you they would just pretend to be friendly even if more.

He clearly panicked as he had been caught red handed and you did the exact right thing. I would have barged past and searched the house!

StarDolphins · 16/09/2026 22:16

Even the f he was perfect from now (which he wouldn’t be) the damage is already done now as how can you trust him?

Ocean67 · 16/09/2026 22:17

I think it’s quite natural to question yourself when you’ve had no reason to doubt him before. It’s a self protection thing, when you don’t want to face the inevitable change in your life, all your hopes and dreams shattered in an instance. Where we search for explanations and hope that it’s just a bad misunderstanding.

The fact is he lied to you on FT, he wasn’t happy to see you and didn’t welcome you in .. if it were innocent he’d let you in.

im so very sorry you have to go through this again , get as much support as you can, allow yourself time to grieve but please please don’t think it’s something you have done. You deserve so much better xxx

TheMixedGirl · 16/09/2026 22:17

You have been together nearly 4 years and you never met this woman and she is sending him birthday cards addressed to the "love of my life" ? Then she is over there and he does not let you in? You have done absolutely the right thing in binning him. What a douche. There is no magic solution I am afraid. You will get over this and meet someone else. Of course you are crying this just happened. It will get better.

I’m going away this weekend with family, I have a wonderful support network around me, off the back of all the support here I have messaged them to tell them we have split.

In real life I am strong and I don’t put up with crap, I’d be the first to see a post like mine and say I did the right thing. I just feel wobbly and vulnerable about it all right now xx

thanks for being lovely x
