Lost the love of my life and I’m tortured by it. Asking for clarity and guidance

About 3-4 years ago I was in a relationship with a guy and it was the safest I’d ever felt in a relationship.

I’d moved to a new city and met him before I’d made any real friends. We hit it off, conversation was easy and I felt truly loved. We never ran out of things to talk about and he did so many thoughtful little things for me and it was easy for me to love him. It was rare. It began to feel a bit co dependent though because he mainly wanted to hang out with me over hanging with his friends/ support his own social life and I struggled to make friends in this new city. Our isolation I think prevented any conflict to happen. We lived in a bubble while I continued to go on cool trips for work/ try new hobbies in our city. I felt sad because he didn’t have a desire to travel and learn like me and I felt like I was growing while he did the same thing everyday and didn’t join me for hobbies. I then began wondering should I fear that there’s something wrong with me for being concerned about this..how could I feel safe and yet alone and partially unknown?

. So while I felt loved I also felt alone in growth and regularly told me to stop working so hard/ I was the “sugar momma”. He got anxious every time I fell asleep or was in the middle of something and a few hrs would pass between texts (like 5hrs during work or during a migraine) and I’d wake up to a stream of calls or texts. I wanted him to feel fully loved and safe but I began to get stressed that if I didn’t text him in a certain amount of time he’d think I didn’t care or was boxing him out. He began to not initiate Intimacy and I didn’t know why..even if I tried but I know it’s my failure for not asking.

Then He the got a dui (his second) while I was away. I found it very upsetting and reckless. His license was revoked for months and he couldn’t leave the state. I’m upset with myself that internally, I struggled to trust that he didn’t have an issue. He also lost his job 2x in a 2yr period and would slump into these periods of sadness (now him and I both know that was depression). He’d call his mom regularly for adult issues instead of me and something about that felt odd.

In the end, I got a once in a lifetime job opportunity that would move me 3.5 hrs away for a short period (probably could consider moving back within the yr). I wanted to be supported in this as I thought it was exciting and would help us greatly in the future but instead he got more anxious about periods between texts, who I was talking to and my intentions in our relationship. I was trying my very best to make him feel loved and I began to feel overwhelmed by the stress of the job and seemingly failing to show how much I loved my partner. I hated myself for taking the job (it ended up being so important for my career though)I tried to discuss the next few months/ anxiety and how to come back together with him and he’d shut it down and say he was tired of talking about it. I felt alone. He started looking for a home to buy in our og state without asking me what I thought and it seemed like an odd time to do that. He also couldn’t come visit due to the dui restriction so it was all up to me. I broke off our relationship because It all felt intense and lonely. I hated myself for that decision immediately because I loved him very much and he was the only mad I felt safe with. I continue to grieve this and I wonder..is there something wrong with me? I ruined something that should have lasted forever..he was my best love and know I will never find something again. I feel so incapable. On my end I see a lack of solid communication and inability to know how to navigate through these challenges that in the end are minuscule

Fast forward:
A big reason I'm questioning myself so much is that a few months ago, years after our original breakup, I reached out to him hoping we might reconnect.
We lived in different states, so I wanted to take things slowly and rebuild a foundation before becoming official. For about six months, I genuinely thought things were developing well. I felt comfortable, connected, and thought our communication was good.
Then one day he called me unexpectedly and listed several things l'd done over the previous couple of months that had hurt him. I was shocked because I had no idea he'd been upset or accumulating resentment. By the time he told me, he was already considering ending things rather than giving us much opportunity to address them as they happened.
The examples felt like relatively small miscommunications to me. Once he asked to call about logistics, and I missed the request for a call and instead texted him all the information. Another time I said I'd had a
"meh" workday without explaining further; he interpreted that as me boxing him out, whereas I would have happily told him more if he'd asked. And once I received 24 hours' notice for a work trip to New York and sent him a picture when I landed. He was hurt that I hadn't told him beforehand because he^ out of the loop. He called these actions
immature and refused to get on FaceTime. I started sobbing be of the character judgment and confusion. He retracted the ending and spent the next two days convincing me he wanted me.and I needed space for a sec to calm down. Atter that he ended it for real. So psychologically painful.
We weren't officially dating and were long-distance, so I didn't realize these things carried that much significance for him. Had he told me at the time, I would have understood and adjusted.
That experience is a huge part of why I'm now questioning my judgment about our original relationship. I've always thought I was reasonably socially aware and thoughtful, but this made me wonder whether things I perceive as minor are actually major relationship failures that I'm somehow not recognizing. I think that's where a lot of my current regret and fear that I was the problem is coming from.

TLDR: l lost the love of my life due to my own flaws, lack of perspective at the time..I can’t move on and torture myself daily over it. Any help is appreciated

The goal isn’t to prove that leaving him was right. You may never get that certainty.
The goal is to stop believing that because you made a painful decision, you deserve to spend the rest of your life punishing yourself for it. You don’t

NoArmaniNoPunani · 08/09/2026 03:44

He sounds like an absolute nightmare. Feeling safe with someone is a very low bar when they have no other good qualities.

Dozycuntlaters · 08/09/2026 03:49

You didn’t lose the love of your life. You lost a controlling manipulating abuser and have escaped years of walking on egg shells and misery. Take those rose tinted glasses off and see him for what he really is. He sounds awful.

PigsawJuzzle · 08/09/2026 03:57

Oh my GOD, woman.
He sounds dreadful.
Immature, insecure, controlling. And a drunk driver with no job on top!!

All can see in your post is that your bent yourself like a pretzel to meet his arbitrary expectations, and expected nothing in return. And when that wasn't good enough for him, you blamed yourself for not guessing what shaped pretzel he wanted!!

Intimacy is fun. We are biologically programmed to want it. Please don't mistake intimacy for sensible life choices. You deserve so much better then him and it's sad you can't see that.

MrsBatshitRatshit · 08/09/2026 04:08

Needy, clingy, immature, manipulative, in trouble with the law, can't hold down a job. However much you love him, he is not a person to built a life with.

parietal · 08/09/2026 04:11

I don’t see anything in what you’ve written to indicate he is worth spending time on, let alone being the “love of your life”. Was he incredible in bed, because nothing else seems to justify him.

people don’t have just one “love” for their life. You have a great career and your freedom and lots of time to explore the world. You can move on from him and see what else interests you in the world.

I guess my question here is..how do you trust yourself to my good choices in the future?

For goodness sake. I hope this is a creative writing exercise. If it’s not, do please stop being so silly.

What you’ve written isn’t a love story, it’s a nightmare. What has previously happened in your life to make you romanticise such poor treatment from such an absolute loser?

I appreciate the varying perspective here. I know you’re only getting one side here..so I’m afraid that I might be toxic if you heard his side? I have analyzed myself so much in how I showed up to that relationship and I can’t figure out if I did anything else “wrong” outside of what I listed. I want to be aware of every possible thing I could bring to the table

This poster is definitely right. Yes, we’re only getting your side, and I’m not saying you’re perfect or don’t have toxic traits of your own - none of us are perfect, but what you’ve described (apart from the DUIs), could basically describe my previous relationship. He is a good person, but extremely insecure and it made him quite controlling and just difficult to be in a relationship with.

The expectations within the relationship would constantly change, and I would also be bending myself like a pretzel trying to please him. I actually said to my counsellor, if I could summarise how the relationship made me feel, it was like I was playing a game where I was the only one without a copy of the rules.

Going to sleep and waking up to loads of texts and missed calls is just the start and you end up walking on eggshells and become the anxious one.

I would honestly suggest counselling if you haven’t already. It will help you understand things better and help you choose healthier relationships in the future.

Sandyknees · 08/09/2026 05:43

He sounds like a loser. There is a difference between feeling lonely - missing something (an intimate relationship) and missing someone ( your loser ex), I think you are probably confusing the two - understandably. I also think you are in danger of otherthinking and analysing this and dwelling on it rather than moving on. He didn’t make you happy so was clearly not the love of your life - that’s why you broke up.

Xanhi · 08/09/2026 05:43

He sounds very suffocating and needy. You don't have to analyse yourself in good relationships. You apologise if you are annoying and you both forget about it. He also sound like a bit of a loser with his DUIs.

TheSandgroper · 08/09/2026 05:44

You made the best move when you moved states and left him behind. That was a really good idea.

All the reasons that made it a good idea to leave are still there.

It’s time to start work on yourself. IMO, find something to do that gets you outside with other people, preferably women heavy, in the fresh air and being physically active. Hiking, an animal shelter, habitat regeneration - something. A healthy mind can come from being active out just as easily as it can from taking a pill and contemplating your belly button. (I don’t deny that sort of thing helps an enormous number of people - I just think OP could do with a different approach).

NewspaperTaxis · 08/09/2026 05:56

This fellow doesn't sound like a catch the way you describe him but then if all of us wrote something like this, the object of our affections might not seem so great 'in the light of day'. By your own admission there seems to be something lacking in your life at this time - feeling lonely in a big city - that precipitated all this kind of feeling. If so, many of us have been there. I suppose it's not just how great the other person is, it's how they make you feel or what they bring out in you that is the key. Though in this case, neither seems too wonderful tbf.

A relationship is on a day to day basis a kind of happy rapport, a way of working. Sending loads of texts and so on that you outline doesn't sound great. He sounds a bit of a man-child in comparison to you - but these types can attract certain types of women so are you a certain type of woman?

DeftGoldHedgehog · 08/09/2026 06:05

He sounds like a deadbeat you are well shut of.

Morepositivemum · 08/09/2026 06:22

Op just because you said if you heard his side you might be toxic- in real life most of us if you heard how we acted would be seen as a list of all the awful things you see on mn- nobody is perfect, we are all human. You are definitely blaming yourself for something that was inevitable, the things you wanted weren’t close to what he wanted and in the right relationship he wouldn’t have been anxious about you going about everything you wanted and needed to do.

Dery · 08/09/2026 06:35

He’s not the love of your life; he’s a man you loved a lot. Frankly, he sounds immature, irresponsible, a user and generally pretty awful. You did well to get away.

Kingdomofsleep · 08/09/2026 06:45

Wash away all the psychobabble and this is a drunk driver who can't hold down a job. You ought to require better for yourself.

Try to think in the literal more rather than the figurative. All this "boxing him out", "I felt alone in growth" stuff.

Regularly talking nonsense like this makes you a magnet for this kind of waster-parasite - because they can justify all kinds of uselessness by talking in your language.

WantALieDown · 08/09/2026 06:53

I’m all for self reflection but these infractions that he’s accused you of are ridiculous. I think he’s done you a favour in freeing you to find someone you can really enjoy being with.

UniquePup · 08/09/2026 04:16

I guess my question here is..how do you trust yourself to my good choices in the future?

Because you made a really choice in taking the job which progressed your career and ending a toxic relationship. You should feel proud of that.

geumsun · 08/09/2026 07:16

You need to knock off the navel gazing, it's doing you no good whatsoever.

thetinsoldier · 08/09/2026 07:24

Stop overthinking this. You dodged a bullet - he sounds awful

relationships aren’t meant to be this much hard work. If they are, it’s a sign they’re not working.

Move on.

speakball · 08/09/2026 07:30

Oh my love if you think this could be the love of your life you probably want to take a close look at the small print. It invariably feels like something that should be in your life has been snatched away. These incredible and intense feeling say NOTHING about what you actually need or what is true. Trust the pain and the process. It’s only trying to help you grow. A very young part of your brain is in freefall and it’s horrible but you are safe. Reading about attachment styles will help you start to name some of the complicated feelings you're dealing with.

Sally3490 · 08/09/2026 07:33

What's with all the waffle ? Feeling safe blah, blah. It really is BS.

The bottom line is he's a loser, drunk and was trying to control you. He wasn't the love of your life. But if you think he is, you really need to give your head a wobble.

CurlewKate · 08/09/2026 07:35

UniquePup · 08/09/2026 04:16

I guess my question here is..how do you trust yourself to my good choices in the future?

Well, you made an excellent choice in staying away from him so long. Keep doing that.
