Lost the love of my life and I’m tortured by it. Asking for clarity and guidance

About 3-4 years ago I was in a relationship with a guy and it was the safest I’d ever felt in a relationship.

I’d moved to a new city and met him before I’d made any real friends. We hit it off, conversation was easy and I felt truly loved. We never ran out of things to talk about and he did so many thoughtful little things for me and it was easy for me to love him. It was rare. It began to feel a bit co dependent though because he mainly wanted to hang out with me over hanging with his friends/ support his own social life and I struggled to make friends in this new city. Our isolation I think prevented any conflict to happen. We lived in a bubble while I continued to go on cool trips for work/ try new hobbies in our city. I felt sad because he didn’t have a desire to travel and learn like me and I felt like I was growing while he did the same thing everyday and didn’t join me for hobbies. I then began wondering should I fear that there’s something wrong with me for being concerned about this..how could I feel safe and yet alone and partially unknown?

. So while I felt loved I also felt alone in growth and regularly told me to stop working so hard/ I was the “sugar momma”. He got anxious every time I fell asleep or was in the middle of something and a few hrs would pass between texts (like 5hrs during work or during a migraine) and I’d wake up to a stream of calls or texts. I wanted him to feel fully loved and safe but I began to get stressed that if I didn’t text him in a certain amount of time he’d think I didn’t care or was boxing him out. He began to not initiate Intimacy and I didn’t know why..even if I tried but I know it’s my failure for not asking.

Then He the got a dui (his second) while I was away. I found it very upsetting and reckless. His license was revoked for months and he couldn’t leave the state. I’m upset with myself that internally, I struggled to trust that he didn’t have an issue. He also lost his job 2x in a 2yr period and would slump into these periods of sadness (now him and I both know that was depression). He’d call his mom regularly for adult issues instead of me and something about that felt odd.

In the end, I got a once in a lifetime job opportunity that would move me 3.5 hrs away for a short period (probably could consider moving back within the yr). I wanted to be supported in this as I thought it was exciting and would help us greatly in the future but instead he got more anxious about periods between texts, who I was talking to and my intentions in our relationship. I was trying my very best to make him feel loved and I began to feel overwhelmed by the stress of the job and seemingly failing to show how much I loved my partner. I hated myself for taking the job (it ended up being so important for my career though)I tried to discuss the next few months/ anxiety and how to come back together with him and he’d shut it down and say he was tired of talking about it. I felt alone. He started looking for a home to buy in our og state without asking me what I thought and it seemed like an odd time to do that. He also couldn’t come visit due to the dui restriction so it was all up to me. I broke off our relationship because It all felt intense and lonely. I hated myself for that decision immediately because I loved him very much and he was the only mad I felt safe with. I continue to grieve this and I wonder..is there something wrong with me? I ruined something that should have lasted forever..he was my best love and know I will never find something again. I feel so incapable. On my end I see a lack of solid communication and inability to know how to navigate through these challenges that in the end are minuscule

Fast forward:
A big reason I'm questioning myself so much is that a few months ago, years after our original breakup, I reached out to him hoping we might reconnect.
We lived in different states, so I wanted to take things slowly and rebuild a foundation before becoming official. For about six months, I genuinely thought things were developing well. I felt comfortable, connected, and thought our communication was good.
Then one day he called me unexpectedly and listed several things l'd done over the previous couple of months that had hurt him. I was shocked because I had no idea he'd been upset or accumulating resentment. By the time he told me, he was already considering ending things rather than giving us much opportunity to address them as they happened.
The examples felt like relatively small miscommunications to me. Once he asked to call about logistics, and I missed the request for a call and instead texted him all the information. Another time I said I'd had a
"meh" workday without explaining further; he interpreted that as me boxing him out, whereas I would have happily told him more if he'd asked. And once I received 24 hours' notice for a work trip to New York and sent him a picture when I landed. He was hurt that I hadn't told him beforehand because he^ out of the loop. He called these actions
immature and refused to get on FaceTime. I started sobbing be of the character judgment and confusion. He retracted the ending and spent the next two days convincing me he wanted me.and I needed space for a sec to calm down. Atter that he ended it for real. So psychologically painful.
We weren't officially dating and were long-distance, so I didn't realize these things carried that much significance for him. Had he told me at the time, I would have understood and adjusted.
That experience is a huge part of why I'm now questioning my judgment about our original relationship. I've always thought I was reasonably socially aware and thoughtful, but this made me wonder whether things I perceive as minor are actually major relationship failures that I'm somehow not recognizing. I think that's where a lot of my current regret and fear that I was the problem is coming from.

TLDR: l lost the love of my life due to my own flaws, lack of perspective at the time..I can’t move on and torture myself daily over it. Any help is appreciated

The toxic sounding one was your ex. Controlling and manipulative. Quite apart from selfishly risking other people’s lives by drink/drug driving. You can do better than him.

UniquePup · 06/10/2026 16:26

Thank you for your comment. I feel this way because he turned his life around when we reconnected. Stable job, no more DUIs and he began to run (I’m a big runner and he did not take care of his body when we first dated). So I look at that and think..have I not evolved enough to meet him where he’s at now?

No, he didn't turn his life around BECAUSE you reconnected. He turned his life around (partly, unless he's also been through therapy to understand why he behaved the way he did) AND you reconnected. He didn't change because he was so keen to make it work this time. He changed because he decided he wanted to.

You are allowed to mourn for him. You are allowed to feel that you lost something precious. Where it becomes dangerous is when you keep circling around and back to something that was wrong and wasn't meant to be. Maybe it is just because you are longing for something you haven't yet found and thought he was your best chance at it. But life is, hopefully, long, and if you were with him then you wouldn't be able to be with someone who is better for you.

You have plenty of time. Don't panic and hold on to the wrong stuff because you think it's better than no stuff at all. Be happy in yourself and content with your decisions.

Alwaystimeforteaandcakes · 06/10/2026 17:06

Ok let's celebrate the fact you are free of this waster. It does not matter if you think he was the love of your life, as you weren't the love of his because if you were he would have treated you better. So draw a line under it and move on.

I don't say that to be cruel but to jolt you into thinking what exactly did he give me in this relationship? And by the sounds of it he gave you nothing but anxiety and upset.

The big question you need to start asking yourself in any relationship is "Am I being treated with love, respect and kindness?" "Am I being treated the way I deserve to be treated?"

Have standards.

That's how you protect yourself from making relationship mistakes. You have been so busy catering to his needs you didn't stop and think is he catering to yours. Plus your needs need to be more than just feeling safe, they need to include things like respect, fun, attraction as well as honesty and reliability and whatever else is importantto you.

I am old now and I've seen it time and again, you get what you think you deserve. So start thinking about what you are willing to accept and what you will no longer tolerate.

And get angry because he's screwing with your head.

tarnishedglitterball · 06/10/2026 17:21

Thank your lucky stars. Thank them every single day.

Stop your navel gazing immediately - you had a lucky lucky escape.

Imagine how your life would have been - constantly on edge, jumping to attention to avoid any tension or unknown slights.

He very nearly had you convinced - this is what abusers do.

Have a look at the threads from survivors of domestic abuse. This is how it starts.

I dont know you but I am glad you escaped - now - move on - choose carefully and recognise the red flags you didnt see last time. Good luck - be happy.

OP, respectfully, most people don't think that not drunk-driving or the ability to hold down a job is anything to congratulate someone about -- your bar is very low if you think it is, and suggests that he was in no way worthy of you when you were originally a couple.

Everything you say about him makes him sound more and more inadequate. Why is it that you seem to have decided he was the 'love of your life'? Seriously? A man repeatedly caught for drunk-driving, who couldn't keep a job, who didn't take care of himself, didn't take responsibility for his own poor MH, and who you say yourself was completely uninterested in travel, growth or changing? What is attractive about any of that? You were right to dump him and concentrate on your career the first time, and you were crazy to initiate contact again.

ThatLoudCat · 06/10/2026 17:31

The whole thing sounds exhausting. And he sounds like a massive cunt.

He's not the love of your life. Raise your standards.

I'm not sure any woman deserves him.

This.

The only comment I want to make OP is "You dodged a bullet". You need to get running, build your social life, engage with other hobbies. Don't twist yourself out of shape for someone else and don't overthink so much. Love that doesn't bring you joy isn't love.

UniquePup · 09/10/2026 16:10

I am very appreciative of everyone’s time and comments here. I am taking them all to heart and I reread them everyday. That being said, I have one final question- I was speaking with my therapist the other day and I began to see everything I did wrong in the reconnection. I wonder if everything below makes me an avoidant and that what I thought was the healthy way of going about it was in hindsight, making him think I did not care.

Upon reconnecting he asked what I wanted and I said I wanted to start as friends first and get to know each other because I also was still healing from that other relationship- I was candid about being in a domestic abuse outpatient program. I don’t know why I didn’t just go all in but at the time, it seemed like the healthy call. And when I finally let him kiss me, I saw that he still had the apps on his phone. He said he wasn’t seeing anyone else but to protect myself i said it was ok to keep it open until we decided concretely what this was. 2.5 mo into reconnecting my lease was up and maybe I should have taken that time to move back to his city but it seemed too soon. And after he made that blindsiding call to me and then retracted it..we discussed the upcoming pending trip for him to come see me and I talked about maybe forgoing the concert to just talk everything out/ that I had two prior commitments that I had to go to that week so I was giving him a head up. In hindsight I feel like he probably saw that as a lack of care for him which is the total opposite of how I felt. I was just trying to keep a healthy balance and I failed

OP posts:
ThatLoudCat · 09/10/2026 16:15

You should get a new therapist, if they're making you feel like you're the problem here. You're not.

You really need to stop thinking about this guy and move on. The dwelling, and overthinking, and trying to twist it all into being your fault is the unhealthy part here.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 09/10/2026 16:19

This relationship didn’t fail because of things you did.

Taking responsibility for your part in a break up is fine, but all you did was see a toxic dynamic and end it. That’s a good thing to do.

Stop blaming yourself for noticing a relationship didn’t work and congratulate yourself!

Try again with a man who can still function when you are busy. It’s much healthier.

What kind of therapist do you have? What is their therapy style?
It seems as if they are enabling you to keep ruminating on why you didn't guess the right actions to make a bad relationship last longer.
I'm not sure the therapy is helping.

She has experience with bpd (I do not have this), OCD, anxiety, depression, attachment wounds, and trauma. Her approach draws from trauma-informed DBT and Attachment Theory, grounded in the belief that you are more than your mistakes.
perhaps you’re right that the therapy is not working. Maybe I need to continue my search for an appropriate therapist. Thank you for the feedback!

It sounds like he was a shithead to you when you were together the first time around. It was therefore never going to work on any subsequent attempt - he's already used to treating you badly so he'll just do that in different ways. This isn't a you problem, except that you need to stop seeing Jerk 2.0 as some sort of one who got away and recognise that he's still toxic for you.

I know I only stated the things I struggled with in the relationship but I’m having a hard time letting go of the kind/ fun things about him. We were best friends and never ran out of things to talk about. The first time we were together he supported my work trips and would always pick me up form the airport with flowers or ice cream. In every jacket he owned he had a bag of my migraine medication for emergencies and he embraced when I had a bad day. His family loved me and he never mocked or belittled me. He said I was the type of girl you marry. We’d make dinner together and budget and he took me on a trip to the mountain one time. I always felt comfortable, he always listened and would always pick up if I needed him. This is the full man I dated..does this still not outweigh the concerns?

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 09/10/2026 18:30

No it doesn’t. All those things can be part of a controlling profile. Co dependency.

In attachment theory, an unpredictable parent is more damaging than a routinely unpleasant one. The child can’t develop strategies because there’s no consistency in cause and effect. Love bombing coupled with control is still love bombing. He’s trying to buy your compliance.

I wonder whether you went into therapy sure the issue was yours, and your therapist has taken that at face value?

This is interesting. Perhaps? I had her read exactly what I posted in this forum along with the comments. One therapist said I have an issue with stonewalling and that if I got into a relationship right now it would fail. That left me feeling like it was my fault. I got a second option from my current therapist who said she doesn’t think I’m an avoidant and did not provide any additional insight on the dynamic other than that my writing made it sound like I was pretty unhappy in the relationship..which felt ambiguous and not a firm take.

He acted the perfect man for you to hook you in and then took his mask off. You miss the guy you first met but it wasn’t really him, just an act that he couldn’t keep up as he was playing a part. No matter what you did he made you feel responsible for his reactions. Even when you were ill HE felt anxious and made it all about him. You are questioning yourself trying to figure out if you ruined it but you did the right thing for you. Don’t let anyone make you feel you have to be anything but yourself, that you should have done more. That man will act the perfect gentleman to hook in his future relationships and it will go downhill too because he will make them feel in the wrong no matter what they do and make them feel deeply flawed.

summitfever · 09/10/2026 21:03

I’ll reiterate what others have said, your mental health is not good if you think a. This was the loyl and b. You have made a mistake dumping him or c. Any of this is your fault.

this man is a giant baby, he’s controlling, manipulative, lack emotional intelligence, selfish, has addiction issues, is incapable of functioning….i could go on. You sound successful, thoughtful, funny, loyal, smart…. I could go on. See the contrast?

you need therapy to snap out of this, you’ve been trapped in limerance the whole year. This guy is a loser, I wouldn’t go near him. Raise your standards to what you deserve

DiscombobulatedHedgehog · 09/10/2026 21:35

With kindness, you seriously would benefit from stopping all this over-analysing! I don’t think it’s doing you any good brooding on it. Also, it’s very rare for things to work out later on when a relationship has already not worked once. You just look at the past with rose-tinted glasses.

A healthy, loving relationship is one where you feel respected and cherished all the time, they don’t nit-pick and try to diminish you.
I was nearly fifty before I met my truly decent and loving DP, we’ve now been together years and I will always be so glad I held my head high when I was younger and didn’t put up and stay with men who didn’t appreciate my worth.

So I look at that and think..have I not evolved enough to meet him where he’s at now?

He may well have improved some (more superficial) aspects of his life between your first and second relationships, but he remained controlling and insecure. His actions are one red flag after another. Men like this don’t tell you at the time that you texting rather than calling them upset them because (1) it’s outrageously petty and no reasonable person would be upset by this and (2) it doesn’t give them the control they later get from ‘oh you did this thing to upset me and you didn’t even realise it, and now you can’t fix it’. It’s pure manipulation to make you feel small and have you questioning your behaviour and ultimately your self-worth. This is because on the inside, this man feels small. He doesn’t think he deserves you so he tries to keep you by making you think you don’t deserve him. You can even feel sorry for him if you like, but I recommend doing it from a distance and not giving him any more brain space except in therapy to unpick what happened so you’re alert to men like him in future.
