How do I move on after my best friend changed their mind?

My best friend is non-binary, and I have a huge crush on them. They were dating a guy a couple months ago, but they broke up. After that, they told me that they liked me. I told them that I had liked them for more than a year. They said that they want to date me but their parents told them that they have to wait until the end of the first quarter. I've waited for them all this time. But just a couple days ago, they emailed me and told me that they still like their ex. They said that they still love me as a best friend but nothing more than that. I told them that I will always love them as a best friend, and it's totally okay and I don't blame them. The thing is, I still really like them. Like, REALLY like them. I don't know what to do. Please help.

There's nothing you can do to change the situation which really sucks.

I think you're going to need to step back from the friendship because this will eat you up until you do.

Huge sympathy for waiting only to be told this now. That would make me think they're not for you.

This is all a massive dopamine fest and you need to withdraw.

Thank you for the advice. I really appreciate it.

Your friend being non binary I’m not sure is relevant but it’s never a good idea to have a crush on your best friend because will end in tears.

if you can’t focus your attention elsewhere and treat this as a proper equal friendship, then you should walk away from it.

because you don’t want them as a best friend. You want them as a sexual partner and thats not compatible with what they want.

BeenThereBackThen · 07/09/2026 19:22

I think your friend REALLY enjoys all the attention and drama.

I’d steer well clear.

Their parents told them to wait until the end of the first quarter?

How old are you both?

I don't feel comfortable answering that question.

I'm sorry, what do you mean?

I don't feel comfortable answering that question.

You don’t feel comfortable making up a number on the internet to a bunch of complete anonymous strangers yet you feel comfortable divulging your apparent lack of love life with your bestie? Yikes.

Excuse me? I am not making up anything! I simply don't feel comfortable disclosing my age to a website of complete strangers. Please, either try and help, or do nothing. It is a waste of time for people to accuse people of things when you don't know the whole story.

Thank you, this baffled me too!
"Sorry honey, for tax purposes we can't have you dating your bestie just yet."

Oh yes! Sorry, I just meant that their parents wanted them to focus on their grades for the first quarter of school so we can get settled.

How old are you both?

I'm going to hazard a guess around 15.

Nice ChatGPT post.

Viviennemary · 07/09/2026 19:53

This is a bit confusing.

Nice ChatGPT post.

It is not ChatGPT. I wrote the situation down hoping for advice, not criticism or accusations.

If he or she is of the mindset that one can choose not to be what you are and to be an entirely fictional category of human, that’s probably not someone emotionally stable enough to be in a relationship with. Plus indulging that nonsense daily would be beyond exhausting. Move on from the whole thing on all levels

TonTonMacoute · 07/09/2026 20:04

I think the first reply nails it really. You can't help your feelings, you can't change theirs. You have been honest about your feelings, and that's good, but you have received a clear message, so perhaps try to step back for a bit and focus on work

AgnesX · 07/09/2026 20:08

This friendship is dead. Knowing how you felt and still feel, they've hurt you by saying they're still keen on their ex. If you stay friends they'll take advantage of you in the long run.

All that stuff about being binary is neither here nor there.

jhonni · 07/09/2026 20:15

This reads like a young teenager wrote it. Are you very young? There will be other loves!

Jk987 · 07/09/2026 20:21

what is your friend’s sexuality though? Are you the right sex for them?

Vaguelyclassical · 07/09/2026 20:27

"Quarters"--are you at an American college or university that operates on the quarter system as opposed to the semester system? This is an Anglophone but largely British site. Thus some of the lexical confusion.
