How do I move on after my best friend changed their mind?

My best friend is non-binary, and I have a huge crush on them. They were dating a guy a couple months ago, but they broke up. After that, they told me that they liked me. I told them that I had liked them for more than a year. They said that they want to date me but their parents told them that they have to wait until the end of the first quarter. I've waited for them all this time. But just a couple days ago, they emailed me and told me that they still like their ex. They said that they still love me as a best friend but nothing more than that. I told them that I will always love them as a best friend, and it's totally okay and I don't blame them. The thing is, I still really like them. Like, REALLY like them. I don't know what to do. Please help.

what is your friend’s sexuality though? Are you the right sex for them?

They are Bisexual/Pansexual.

Excuse me? I am not making up anything! I simply don't feel comfortable disclosing my age to a website of complete strangers. Please, either try and help, or do nothing. It is a waste of time for people to accuse people of things when you don't know the whole story.

No what I’m saying is rather than sounding ridiculous by saying “I don’t feel comfortable telling anonymous strangers who I’m asking for help because my bestie isn’t interested in me how old I am” you could have completely made up a number and no one would be any the wiser.

instead it’s absolutely abundantly clear you’re still at school and are very young and are worried about the repercussions of talking to adults on the internet, hence why you don’t feel comfortable answering how old you are.

They are Bisexual/Pansexual.

Can you even be both of those things at once? 🤯

You just gave your age away. Go do your homework OP.

Even if that was true, it is completely inappropriate to point out, furthermore, I don't see any reason for my age to matter. I am sharing my personal problems because I need help. That has nothing to do with my age.

They are very similar. Pansexual means that they like many genders, or that the genitals don't matter, but it's more of the personality. Bisexual means they like more than one gender.

How? I don't see any comment that discloses my age.

The “many genders” one makes me think you’re definitely under 20

Failedcrunchymum · 07/09/2026 20:53

As someone who wasted far too much time on the wrong people, don't waste any more time waiting for them to decide. Just get on with your life, take opportunities to spend time with other people, because when you're young it's the best time for having fun and not taking things too seriously.

Because apparently their parents have a say in their dating life and you say you're at school.

This is broadly a UK website, school means education up to the age of 18, not university - at which point no parent gets a say in their adult child's love life.

If your friend, for whatever reason now, doesn't wish to date you then all you can do is accept it. Be sad for a while but move on.

This reads like a young teenager wrote it. Are you very young? There will be other loves!

I’m going American high schooler…or they’d have said college if they were 18+ and wouldn’t have wanted parents permission to date 🫣

You sound very young, but if turns out you are middle aged the advice might be different.

loveawineloveacrisp · 07/09/2026 21:17

This is bollocks. I'm out.

Imdonehere · 07/09/2026 21:23

Bi as a prefix means two . To be bisexual would be to be attracted to both sexes.

Jk987 · 07/09/2026 21:33

What is wrong with being young? The OP is being ridiculed for her assumed age and that is uncalled for.

I’m pointing out to every other person responding here that you are a child who shouldn’t be talking to adults on the internet. It’s the opposite of inappropriate to point that out.

Honestly OP it’s not always a good idea to date friends, it just gets messy.

Can you just try and love your friend in a platonic way and find someone else to date?

They sound like they might mess you around a bit and you’ll end up losing the friendship altogether else.

IamEarthymama · 07/09/2026 22:10

😂

andfinallyhereweare · 07/09/2026 22:14

It was the furthermore for me that gave the young age away of @wafflesareyum students always used to write that when trying to bulk out essays or make them sound good. I never really hear any adult use furthermore in any walk of life 😂

Bisexual means being attracted to both sexes - male and female. HTH.

Your age matters because the advice will be different.

If you are young (which you sound) you need to know that your friend (non binary, and both pan and bi - doesn't pan mean.... anything goes, so bi is irrelevant ) is the first in a long line of unrequieted loves in your life

By not giving your age (which I place around 13 or 14) you are not going to get all the help you want or need.

I echo above with you're anonymous here so age wont give you away

…so just a regular 16 year old discovering humans are sexual beings and making sense of it all, right? I hazard a guess, a female.

Marellain · 08/09/2026 09:51

It’s not appropriate to be discussing this here, op. Ask your parents to get you a counsellor.
