Can a long-term relationship survive a major mismatch in libido?

My partner and I have been together for 5 years. We’re both in our 20s, we have one child and I’m currently pregnant with our second.
Our relationship is generally good, but our sex life has been an ongoing problem. My sex drive is much higher than his. He can easily go weeks without sex and seems completely fine with it. Usually nothing happens until I eventually get upset or complain about it. Then he’ll initiate, tell me he’ll make more effort, things improve briefly, and eventually we end up back in exactly the same situation.
This did happen before we had children, although it wasn’t as bad as it is now.
Over the years there always seems to be a reason: he’s stressed with work, he’s tired, we don’t have enough time because of our child.

Something that has also bothered me is that he used to masturbate quite frequently (sometimes every other day), although he says he doesn’t anymore. I struggled to understand how he could have the desire to do that regularly but could go weeks without wanting sex with me.

I’ve realised recently that I don’t think he actually wants our sex life to change very much. He has a naturally low sex drive and seems comfortable with how things are. It feels more like he wants me to stop being unhappy about it rather than genuinely wanting more intimacy himself.

I don’t want him to have sex with me because I’ve complained or because he feels obligated. I want to feel desired by my partner.
This probably comes to a head for me about once a month. The rest of the time we’re getting on with our lives and raising our family, which makes me feel ridiculous for even considering whether this could eventually end our relationship. But when it gets to me, it really gets to me.

I’ve even had the uncomfortable realisation that if I wasn’t pregnant, I think I would have been seriously tempted to cheat. I haven’t cheated and I don’t want to, but the fact I’ve reached the point of thinking that way scares me.
I also think he may propose soon. I love him and don’t want to break up our family over sex, but I’m frightened of getting married knowing that this is probably what our sex life will always be like—or that it could become even less frequent once we have two children.
I don’t expect him to change his natural libido, but I also don’t know whether I can spend the rest of my life suppressing mine.

Has anyone been in a long-term relationship or marriage with a major libido mismatch? Is there actually a realistic compromise where both people are happy, or does one person inevitably end up feeling pressured while the other feels constantly rejected?
I especially want to hear from people who stayed together and made it work, as well as people who eventually separated because of it.

Mines much lower than dhs, we compromise once a week. I'm disabled so its a real faff especially with teens living with us so music has to go on etc so we dont traumise them. We are both happy with once a week. Marriage is about compromising for the person you love.

Doidothis · 07/09/2026 08:44

I’m afraid a second child is probably going to make this worse. He will be more tired, more stressed etc. Is he generally a good husband/dad? Are you willing to compromise? If not you don’t have a huge amount of choice - you either leave him and find someone who has the same sex drive as you or figure something out together. Therapy might help?

whippersnapper55 · 07/09/2026 09:07

One of my best friends was in this situation. I'm sorry to say it didn't improve 😔 she left him eventually. She always assumed he had a low sex drive but apparently he got back with an old girlfriend and had loads of sex with her. So much so that the children complained that they heard them having loud sex when they were staying there! I know my friend wishes she'd left earlier and not wasted years being miserable. It wasn't just the lack of sex, it was the lack of closeness and affection and feeling desired.

Luckily I know he isn’t getting with anyone else. He works from home so is here 24/7. But if your getting it wherever least there’s a reason I feel I don’t have one

Yes there are loads of people who end a marriage for this reason. Why should you have celibacy enforced on you/have to beg for maintenance sex? Find someone you are more compatible with, and he can do the same

AppleAndBannans · 07/09/2026 21:29

I (male) left a long relationship for exactly this reason - the constant rejection wears you down- I actually wish I had left years ago now.

i. have subsequently met a woman who was the same boat as the OP, her exh was the lower libido partner - we are much more closely matched and both of us are now much more closely matched with the quantity and quality of sex we are both having now

Minasama · 07/09/2026 21:31

These are the decisions you need to make before having children. Can’t he manage once a week for you?
Is there any chance he could be having an affair?
Have you put on a lot of weight (when not pregnant) or otherwise changed your appearance?

OakElmAsh · 07/09/2026 21:34

I'm the low libido partner in a similar situation. I go along with it when he asks, but I practically never have spontaneous desire. He would like me to actively want to have sex and initiate. I can't make myself. It's not anything about him, he is a fully equal partner, attractive etc. He wants more effort from me... not sure what effort will make any difference though

Phloosie · 07/09/2026 21:39

Is he definitely heterosexual? He wouldn’t be the first man to struggle to face up to his sexuality.

I’m 99.9% sure he’s heterosexual

I do understand from this point of view but the problem is he keeps saying things will change. I’d rather him just say this is me and it’s not going to change so what are we going to do but I keep getting false hope

Edited

It wasn’t a big issue before we had children. He says he can do once a week but then it just doesn’t happen. No, I haven’t changed my appearance or put on weight. From what I can tell he’s still attracted to me. Just never in the mind frame for sex

Happy for you. I crave sex so much because of the lack I’m getting it. I don’t even have the most crazy sex drive and I know our lives are busy but I don’t believe once or twice a week in our 20s is unreasonable. It’s hard when you have children too.

Do you enjoy it once you are doing it? Or you hate it and the thought of it also?

I was in your position at your age. Now in my fifties & he hasn't touched me for 5 years. I'm sorry but these things only change for the worse.

Wow, 5 years that’s such a long time. I’m sorry. Do you not want to leave?

I think so too. He is a great partner and dad. He has cheated in the past in the form of texting a girl online. However, we worked past it and he has changed for the better. It’s just hard because I don’t want to look back and say I blew up my kids lives over sex needs

Has he considered checking his testosterone levels?

Has he considered checking his testosterone levels?

Upon doing research I think he should get it checked. I think I briefly brought it up once but he didn’t really take it seriously. I’m also worried that if it is low and he starts taking testosterone that’s going to send him into a super high sex drive. He had a bad foot fettish before as in excessive and I’m worried taking testosterone could spike this but I don’t know enough about it I guess

Someone with a low sex drive doesn’t text other girls, masturbate and have a major foot fetish… something else is going on here… either he doesn’t want to have sex with you because you can’t satisfy him / he needs / wants more whether it be in the form of the fetish or another kind of sex or something else he can’t be open about. It doesn’t add up that it’s low sex drive.

Definitely not into the thought of it, it's usually fine when we're doing it. It's very hard to describe, I orgasm every time, he knows what he's doing, I just find it an awful lot of faff for something that honestly feels like a sneeze to me
So I'm doing it for him 100%, I get very little out of it personally

I agree, in the past I have made him feel ashamed of his foot fettish I admit so maybe it’s that but even before I knew it was as bad as it got his sex drive wasn’t the highest. He’s also told me he has these issues in previous relationships. I think he just prefers a quick release than the whole thing of sex

Does he know that’s how you feel? And does he feel bad about that. Do you think it’s a relationship breaker or have you both figured it out to work for you

It sounds like getting married would not be a great idea. But I also wouldn’t think it’s a good time to end things if things are otherwise ok. How much will sex be on your mind when you have a new born and older child? Might be best to get through that first year then see how things are.
