Long time lurker, first time poster.

To cut to the chase I have found texts on my husbands phone to a male friend of his that effectively end my marriage. My spidey sense has been in overdrive recently although the actual signs that all was not well were/are fairly subtle. Small but noticeable changes to his mood (short with me and our child frequently), more distant but not by much and always easily explained as tiredness, work stresses etc. Unfortunately for him, my intuition has always been very strong and my bullshit radar is unmatched.
He was out with work colleagues this week and fell asleep with his phone unlocked and in his hand. I woke up in the middle of the night and went through it which I'm not even a tiny bit sorry about.
Anyway, hes had a friend from adolescence who I have never liked. He's a pompous, arrogant prick and I keep my distance. The friend is also married with children. My raging spidey sense made me check their WhatsApp conversations and of course, I was right to.
Interspersed with every day life sort of chat are links to porn. Some of its your typical stuff but there is also a huge amount of gay/transsexual - basically a total penis fest. Now. I could ALMOST get my head around this. Human sexuality is complex and I know that its normal for people who identify as heterosexual to fantasise about sex with someone with the same body parts as them. However, what I cannot get over is the sexually charged nature of their discussions. Its not just discussing the content but discussing how theyre wanking, how hard they came. These messages go back months and probably longer but I'd seen enough to know that this is an established pattern between them. More recently the messages are of my husband discussing wanting to buy a sex toy and has shared with his friend all the things he has shoved up his arse. Again, if this was something my husband broached with me and pitched it as something he wanted to try in the bedroom, great. We have a good sex life and I am by no means a prude. However, no mention of this has ever been made to me. Things appear to have escalated around a month ago when they were exchanging messages of a wildly graphic nature about my husbands excitement at being abroad with work and nothing to do but pleasure himself in the evenings. My husband has also mentioned an upcoming work trip I have where he will be alone as his mother is watching our child due to the nature of his job and him not being able to be available in the evenings quite often. There doesnt seem to be any plans (yet) for him to have sex with anyone else but he makes mention of basically wanting a dick to enjoy and it almost reads as testing the waters to see if this friend takes the bait. He didnt but the sexualised chats do continue.
Obviously my marriage is over. Theres no coming back from this as far as I'm concerned. Even if he's not in denial about being gay and this is all fantasy, the deal breaker for me is the sexually charged conversations with someone who isnt me.
Our financial position isnt the worst but its not the greatest either. All of our money goes into the one account and everything gets paid from that. I have no separate money or finances because I genuinely never believed I would need to. More fool me. We jointly own our home and have a high number of outgoings. As it stands, I cannot buy him out of his share of our home nor can I afford the mortgage. My parents are financially well off and I do think there is scope for them to bail me out so that our child doesnt have to leave the only home he has ever known but that's not a right now problem.
I took pictures of all the messages and have them in a password protected folder on my phone. I plan to start quietly getting information together such as his pension stuff, important documents relating to our home etc. I would like to have as many of my ducks in a row as possible before confronting him and telling him that I want a divorce.
How on earth do I "play it cool"? I am incandescent with rage as well as trying not to think about the betrayal, my entire adult life being a lie and the lasting impact on our child. I cannot go there as I will fall apart and I need to be strong. I dont want him getting even a hint that all is not rosy.
If anyone has been in a similar situation I really would welcome any advice or words of wisdom on how to muddle through until its time to confront him.

Wow, what a shock. I don’t have any advice for you, but I’m sure someone will be able to give you some. You sound so stoic and level headed, a very mature attitude.

I wish you all the best for yourself and your little one, you deserve so much more, take care, 🤗

Thank you so much for your kind words. Believe me, a very huge part of me wants to smash up his car and set fire to his belongings but I am trying hard to listen to the logical part of my brain that knows thats a terrible idea haha. Taking the moral highground and being level headed will hopefully be worth it in the long run!

You have all the right to be angry, but so far you have described what sound like hubby's strong fantasies, no proof he's been meeting anyone for sexual encounters. If I was in your shoes and had a good sex life and good rest of the marrage something like this would have... scratching my head while figuring out were it's heading to (it may head nowhere, and stay in fantasy world). I wouldn't confront him but every couple of months I would look at his phone to make surehe's not meeting people. If the dick fantasizing is a deal breaker for you I would quietly start putting my ducks on a row because the moment you threaten with divorce he's going to lock his phone, delete all conversations, move his money and hide documents. You don't want that.

In the meanwhile get a punching bag.

I agree there is no evidence of him having had sex with anyone else for now and that this is fantasy. The issue isnt so much with the intense dick fantasising but about the graphically sexual nature of conversations hes having with his friend. For me its clear that hes obtaining sexual gratification from them. Personally the deal breaker is this - he is effectively being unfaithful in my eyes.
Punching bag might be needed!

I always think it's better in circumstances like this to be completely detached and unemotional, so no big confrontation or giving him the attention of emotions or crying.
Start the divorce online, once he gets notification, and asks about it say 'yeah, I'm not attracted to you, it's not salvageable. Let's stick to discussing raising our child'

Plan if you'll be buying him out or if the house will need sold. Prioritise yourself. Anytime your thoughts creep to analysing him etc. direct them back to you and your future.

Sounds like he's having a virtual wanking fest with his buddy which I find a super weird but that's just me, I can understand finding an online stranger to explore your gay fantasies... but his straight buddy from his friends group IRL?

strange.

OhBotherSaidPoo · 23/08/2026 12:06

If he hasn't already, he will shortly.
I had an ex like this, the friend group would encourage cheating.
Start proceedings now, as another OP said, stay cool, calm and tell him you want to focus on raising the children.

ThatBreezyScroller · 23/08/2026 12:15

Speak to your parents about whether they are definitely able to buy him out.

I personally would need him to leave today.
This has been going on for a long time and if he’s not physically chested yet he will do soon (although I definitely think he’s cheated).

You need to get legal advice.

I dont think Im ready for that conversation with them yet but know that it would be better sooner rather than later.
I would love nothing more than to ask him to leave but need to get my shit sorted out first. I also want to minimise the impact on our little one and think thats best achieved by riding things out until my position is stronger.

I worked as a sex therapist for 6 months last year. I am not condoning any of what you have found, and I am not telling you to handle the situation, yet lots of men and woman have sexual fantasties that they don't disclose to others, he could well be bisexual, or realised hes started to get turned on by penis. From 6 months as a sex therapist a lot of men and woman still love their parthers, yet have hidden kinks that turn them on so many men told me in that job all manner of toys they were using and their wives didn't know, and they didn't want them to. As we age and we have had passion with the same person for years, that intital buzz of newness with that person, becomes routine, and people want to find new levels of pleasure, and loads of men play alone, even ones that are still really in love with their wives.

The shock and sense of betrayal upon discovering he is getting turned on by a penis, may be a shock. Yet you need to have honest conversations with him about what triggered his interest and how much its shocked and upset you, whether he is bisexual, or is it just faze. It doesn't mean he doesn't enjoy passion with you, his sexual boundaries are being explored by him and you have stumbled accross them in not the most pleasant ways.

The main issue is truly not the content of his sexual fantasies. Is it jarring? Yes. Is it marriage ending? No. The main issue is that he is essentially sexting with another person. Someone who is not me. He has been unfaithful.

It’s an emotional affair the very least! Reverse the sex of the person he’s texting. I can’t believe the apologists on here.

Luckyness45 · 23/08/2026 12:48

All I can say the call of what you do next is yours, know your boundaries, and do whats right for you. No one else can make a decision but you. Men and woman some of them have very loose morals and something we see as wrong, others would go its only a message.

I did end my marriage over my ex messaging someone else, yet it said in the message I saw she couldn't wait to be held in his arms again. If it was just sexting I would want to know how long its gone on, why did it start, and what are they not happy about in the marriage or even are they emotionally checked out, or has their been issues in your relationship that you have overlooked?

Yet as I said above it has to be your decision. In my case my boundaries were there is no going back, yet in my case we were having financial issues and he decided to run away from them by getting attention from someone else. We divorced in 2018 my life is better without him. Divorce is hard though and I was a emotional mess for a good 18 months later. Even now somethings trigger anger over what happened, yet thats what happens when betrayal and being lied to uncovers.

PitifulPrincess · 23/08/2026 12:48

Exactly. If was describing in great detail to another woman about how turned on he is, wanking habits and sexual fantasies, I feel like everyone would be telling me to leave him. The sex of the person he is texting is actually wholly irrelevant at this point.

You didn't read the actual so I don't know how you can say that he was hinting?

@WellWTFisthis This is unacceptable to you, and that's all that matters; you don't need to provide him with the reason and, when other people ask you could just tell them to ask him.

This would be relationship ending for most people I think.

You do need to tell your closest family and friends so you have support. You don’t necessarily need to tell them the whole story if you choose not to but it doesn’t reflect badly on you at all so…

If your DPs can bail you out I would put pressure on him to agree to that asap whilst he’s still feeling (presumably) guilty. As time goes on he might become less obliging and more difficult. You know him best (well, sort of!)

Once you have basic plans you can start divorce proceedings and free yourself. So sorry you are going through this. 💐

Exactly this!!

Him and this friend are obviously more than friends!

Some posters would be going mad if their DH put a kiss at the end of a text to a female colleague but this man talking about fantasies and masturbation is seemingly not as bad just because it’s with another man?!

I’ve never talked like this with any of my male or female friends.

DH is obviously bi-sexual and has obviously had sex or wants to have sex outside of the relationship.

gratefulmezze · 23/08/2026 13:29

For those posters giving their advice on whether this is something you could possibly live with or if these fantasies aren't too serious as long as he isn't cheating etc.....I don't think they're answering your OP - how do you stay cool and calm while getting your ducks in a row?
You have already decided your marriage is over. I would be exactly the same, a line has been crossed, if it was a female friend he was having these conversations with it would be seen as an emotional affair (not to mention I just couldn't be attracted to a man who shoves random objects up his bum in hotel rooms and talks to his mate about it....)
My advice would be to have a conversation with your parents (hypothetically speaking could they help you out if your marriage ended? Without worrying them too much at the moment)
Start getting documents together and possibly meet with a solicitor for some advice
you are in a position of power right now and you will drop the bomb when it is the right time for you to do so.
Open your own bank account.
....but how on earth do you carry on as normal in front of him? Surely you won't want to have sex with him now? That is the hard part trying to act normal, stopping yourself from blurting something out....how well can you act? How good an actor are you?
You deserve better OP, you will get through this and be stronger for it!

TheSunBeatsDown · 23/08/2026 13:35

If you want to stay cool and gather info, then come up with an excuse to swerve sex (e.g. infection, time of the month) for a bit. I wouldn't be able to stop myself shouting at him though.

I don't doubt people have fantasies outside what they do in the marital bedroom, but I do expect them to be up front about their sexuality before they marry or we are in a serious relationship, and I do not expect them to be sexting other people. What they find exciting is up to them, once they start sharing it with others, it's not a fantasy, is it, they are already teaming up with other people to get their rocks off. That would not be ok for me.
