Algerian husband anyone? Help!

I'm looking for people who are married to Algerian men or who understand that culture who might be able to share/relate to my experiences.
So I have been married to my Algerian husband for 14 years, we share four sons.
Last May, his brother was arrested in Algeria on dr*g charges and has been on remand in prison there ever since. I feel like this situation has bought out the worst in our marriage although there are so many other issues.
Last year he spent a total of three months (not all in one go) in Algeria looking after his parents, brother's wife and kids and brother's court case, following the arrest.
He has left full time work and now works as a freelance agency chef in order to facilitate regular trips to Algeria. This has caused financial strain and long periods on lone parenting (he's just returned from another trip last week) my family don't live close by so it's just me looking after the boys.
Last year, he also moved out for two months after he left because I was 'fake' and unsupportive for disagreeing that he should leave work and travel regularly abroad. His parents also labelled me a 'trouble maker' over this.
I do 95% of the parenting (cooking, cleaning, homework, bathing) as a well as taking children to sports and looking after their emotional needs. He says I'm lazy and unclean ( his mother bleaches the floor every morning) and that I do nothing.
He's trying to push me back into work, as he resents financial responsibility despite the fact our youngest two are babies, whilst saying that he won't quit work to facilitate me getting a job.
He's moved out and travelled abroad about 5 seperate times in the past two years and our eldest son, in particular is very angry with him and feels abandoned, yet he struggles to understand this saying he should ' respect him above all else'.
We got married in an Islamic bookshop with two strangers as witnesses and later in the registry office for his visa obligations. No wedding, no dress, no honeymoon. At the time I was only 21, I'm not materialistic so didn't mind too much but the marriage has reap no rewards for my sacrifices.
We're living in poor accommodation, he has no drive or motivation, happy to scrape-by or 'just survive ' that's life, he says. I'm currently undertaking a degree course in the evenings and want to buy a home but doesn't mind going with the wind. He even wants to become a UK national to claim benefits which I find really hard to understand as I consider that to be people's last resort.
We've never celebrated a anniversary, valentine's day or my birthday or mother's day, he says these things don't matter.
I think we're just fundamentally different with very different values but it's weird as he started out nicer and more caring. Now it's like he has zero commitment to the boys and I.
I'm Christian and Muslim so I think we had very fundamental difference ideas on responsibility and what's important, but in the first few years these things didn't really come up, maybe the more you know someone your get down to their core?
He's also very individualistic, self serving would rather spend a day off alone than with the kids and I.
Is anyone's experience similar, are these fundamental cultural differences or is he just a crappy person. The marriage is pretty much over but I need some insight into what his thought process might be, for the sake of our children.

He sounds like a selfish, entitled, lazy pig (sorry that wasn’t very helpful).

AwayWiththeGoblins · 26/07/2026 01:10

I think you’re giving his ‘thought processes’ far too much headspace. It’s not working for you. End things and figure out how to co-parent amicably.

SoInLuv · 26/07/2026 01:10

Hi OP.
I'm sorry you're in this situation. My opinion is: this is just who your husband is- his personality. Nothing to do with the culture. I've had a few Algerian friends (female) and I've gotten to know their husbands, too (both Algerian, as in, both the wife's & their hubbies)- all of them celebrate birthdays and anniversaries! They'd throw really lovely birthday parties for the children, celebrate special days like Valentine's etc etc.
On the other hand my British friend is married to a Moroccan man (v similar culture to Algerian) and they don't celebrate anniversaries at all, and as for birthdays they may get a take away but there's no celebration really- no card or presents etc.
I guess your DH is the way he is due to his own family values and traditions.

OhBotherSaidPoo · 26/07/2026 01:11

That is not a typical Algerian man, that is a man who had used your naivety and youth to stay in the UK. The fact that you have children and are essentially a single parent to them whilst he does what he wants suits him just fine.
I would be very wary of him being in a relationship back in Algeria.
Look at getting your ducks in a row.

Darragon · 26/07/2026 01:12

I’ve been watching too much Holiday Love Rats on Youtube maybe but this pattern seems very familiar. Some of the men on there play the very long game. Has he got his British passport yet? I think he’s getting his ducks in a row, you need to sort yours.

Funkylights · 26/07/2026 01:14

He’s sounds vile. Some might be cultural but did he marry you for a visa? Harsh sorry but sounds hideous

RedToothBrush · 26/07/2026 01:16

My best friend is married to an Algerian.

You have a selfish cock issue not an Algerian issue.

None of what you say rings the same. He doesn't like people coming to the UK for benefits. He thinks lots of people do and he has no time for it.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 26/07/2026 01:37

Just leave him
solo parent
he sounds useless anyway

Onthemaintrunkline · 26/07/2026 01:44

Your husband, simply, isn’t a nice man. His treatment and involvement in your life, your marriage and his children’s lives can’t even be termed minimal. His interests are totally self-serving.

I don’t know any Algerian men, but I’m fairly sure this is not a cultural trait, this is him, and his treatment of you is dreadful. I suspect after reading your opening post, change for him is not on his agenda. He is living life for him & his Algerian family.

You and your boys deserve so much better than you have at the moment.

Inmyuggs · 26/07/2026 02:06

Did u ever see angela on 90 day fiance...like hell i condone any marriage from these places.
All I say is divorce
He can go help hos mother bleach the floors...people lile that are so mental.

CocoQueen2024 · 26/07/2026 02:18

I have been married to my Algerian husband for 35 years and he is nothing like your husband.

This man will treat you how you allow it and he isnt going to get any better.

You deserve better.

Poppycorn123 · 26/07/2026 02:32

Divorce him ASAP before he tries to take your dc over there.

Speakeasier · 26/07/2026 02:45

When I was at college there were a lot of men from Arabic countries who had families back home but would then start relationships with British women and even marry them and have children. But then they’d treat their British wives really badly.

I’m not saying all men from these cultures do this but it was a thing. I would be very suspicious that he has a relationship back home and is just using you. He may think that he doesn’t have to respect British women in the same way. One of my friends is married to a guy from a similar country whose family all now live here and the family are very rude to her.

Even if it isn’t a cultural thing he is treating you very badly and you deserve so much better. Have you done the Freedom Programme from Women’s Aid. It might give you some pointers as to how abusive men operate.

Asiana · 26/07/2026 03:23

Fundemental cultural differences. In his culture men are everything and women lesser. Be very aware that at some point he might try to take boys to Algeria and take measures now. I'm sorry this is so harsh, speaking from personal knowledge. He is not a crappy person, in his values (his) family is above all else and honor (taking care of them especially as the one who managef to move abroad) is everything. Bleaching floor totally normal in this culture too. Doesn't make you unclean and probably much healthier not doing it but he will see you and others as such.

maxslice · 26/07/2026 04:27

As an outsider, it seems that's he's virtually abandoned you and the boys, You've been doing everything. If you can tough it out, finish your degree course and start looking for jobs. Get legal advice about separation, protecting finances, and explore resources for single mothers, Do what you need to do to protect yourself and your children. Then leave him. He's already basically left you.

Lumpycat · 26/07/2026 06:16

Sounds as though he’s terminally chauvinistic and selfish. In Islam it’s a man’s job to support his wife and family but he seems to think it more important to focus on his Algerian relatives and leave everything to you (or the benefits system).
He will not lose his residency status now with four UK children and a long residence. Let him go. He’ll likely try and look for a replacement. Maybe a nice servile young one from Algeria.
Nothing you you will ever lead him to respect you. You can do 100% of the parenting and work full time and skivvy every minute of the day but he sound fundamentally wired to be selfish. It may partly be his culture but why should that take precedence over your culture and your happiness?

Defoncforthis · 26/07/2026 06:18

How on earth can you be Christian and Muslim?

regista · 26/07/2026 06:26

Regardless of cultural differences he has demonstrated to you what kind of husband he is. Work out how to go for divorce now, this will get worse not better. 100% he has used you and will continue to do so. He cares a lot more about himself than you and the kids.

dunroamingfornow · 26/07/2026 06:29

Once a man starts comparing you to his mother and saying you are unclean it’s over. I would be strongly suspicious of his trips back home. I would be getting a divorce as soon as possible. You are already single. This is not a cultural thing, it’s a him thing. He sounds horrible.

Cheese55 · 26/07/2026 06:41

Poppycorn123 · 26/07/2026 02:32

Divorce him ASAP before he tries to take your dc over there.

Especially as you have 4 boys. I would be hiding the paperwork needed for passports.

Duvetdayneeded · 26/07/2026 07:15

End it. This is wrong on so many levels

Enrichetta · 26/07/2026 07:22

I agree.

Him being Algerian is a side issue. You need to focus on the real issue: how to extricate yourself from this marriage and become a single parent. Anything else would be to your and your children’s disadvantage.

oceanslimit · 26/07/2026 07:27

Your husband is an arsehole.

My husband is Iranian born and bred and he's a great husband and dad. He would do anything in the world for me and our boys. He does most of the cooking in fact, and we share household stuff equally.

His mum (who still lives in Iran) adores me and has always been completely supportive of us as a couple.

Divorce this idiot. It wont get any better.

WhynotJanet · 26/07/2026 07:37

No experience of men from his culture, however I think at this point that aspect is irrelevant. He treats you like crap and your marriage is over so you need to start making plans for divorce. Hide all the kids passports while you are at it. Finish your degree, take practical steps to start job hunting, looking for childcare? You need to get into the mindset now of being a single parent and focus on that. Don’t do anything for him, take contraception/ do not sleep with him.

greencatwitch · 26/07/2026 07:37

This has nothing to do with his nationality and all to do with the fact that he is a lazy, entitled idiot.

Divorce him and make sure that he does not take your kids to his home country, even on holidays.
