DH wants us to go Left Handed. HELP.

Not sure if this is the correct thread, but here goes....

My DH and I have been together for over 30 years and, as we're getting on we've both become more aware of and conscious to avoid what I suppose is called Cognitive decline.

I enjoy crosswords and reading, so I think I'm at least using my brain daily. DH has never bothered much with what he ( Mostly jokingly ) calls 'Book-Learning'. Anyway, all of a sudden he's become an 'expert'. He told me he'd read an article ( Although I suspect he means he's seen a two- minute video on Tok Tok ) which claims using your left hand for tasks that you would normally use your right hand for can stave off cognitive decline and now he thinks this is a miracle cure-all.
And, of course, he's become obsessed, everything has to be done left-handed, and if he see's me using my right hand, he booms 'Left!'. I can be chopping vegetables or opening a jar of coffee and I'll suddenly hear 'Left!' in my earhole. I've told him it's annoying, but he's as stubborn as a goat that's been struck by lightning.
Yesterday he spent over two hours repairing the lawnmower left-handed and somehow thinks it's turned him into bloody Einstein in a cloth cap.
I've tried suggesting some 'alternatives', as I read that learning a new language is effective. I've always fancied trying Portuguese, or even Hausa or Finnish. But I suspect trying to entice him with any of this will be met with the equivalent of 'Foreign Muck', and it will be the Moussaka situation all over again.
Honestly, I could scream. I know men get fixated, especially as they get older but this is honestly too much. I'm no Carol Vorderman so can someone explain whether there's any truth in his claims of Neural-plasticity in the brain?
I really need to get some answers because if I keep hearing 'Left!' I may well go hard right! In fact, the other day whilst driving he started rabbitting Left! Left! and it was only when I realised that he was pointing to the entrance to the Garden Centre, that I heeded what he was saying.
So, is there any truth to it? And is anyone else's aging husband going as mad as an Aardwark at an all you can eat Ant-Buffet?
I better go, I can hear him rumaging in the airing cupboard and if he see's me typing with two hands it'll be all she wrote. Literally!

I saw a documentary made by Chris Hemsworth saying that learning to play the drums was excellent for staving off decline and you use a lot of functions all in one go. I am
up for it but the long suffering OH is not keen on turning the garage into a soundproofed room

Chris Hemsworth the actor?

Chagalaga23 · 08/07/2026 19:59

Lovely post, thanks OP! Very funny.
You should write a book.
I've no idea of the truth of your dhs ideas but wouldn't be surprised if there was something in it.

Chris Hemsworth the actor?

Yes - it is part of a series he did on Netflix or Amazon , can’t remember which onen

It's a sad state of affairs when no one is allowed to write something in a funnny, story telling kind of way without being accused of using AI. I mean there's been writers for decades coming up with amusingly written stories that use funny similes (Bob Mortimer anyone??) I rather think it shows lack of intelligence to read something like OPs threads and just think 'AI slop', surely people know that humans can write this way.

Anyway OP get your husband some left handed screwdrivers and tell him to put some shelves up would be my advice

(verfied human, last I looked)

Chris Hemsworth the actor?

He discovered a few years ago he has a high genetic predisposition to dementia so he researched ways to prevent it and, I believe, made some big changes to his lifestyle

Ask him if he's now a left-handed wanker or just a wanker.

🤣🤣

Well, the trouble is if you said peer-reviewed to my Bob he'd ask, 'Which one Wigan or Brighton.

🤣🤣

You are hilarious!!

How's his left-handed arse wiping going?

That is definitely not an easy skill to
perfect. Especially when you've also had your left shoulder replaced 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️. .

What's that face for??

I'm weird, I realised at about 14 that I use my left hand for some tasks even though I would say I'm right handed. I can't use a knife in my left hand to peel, slice butter etc I tend to lead with my left foot on steps and I can't pour comfortably from a jug, kettle etc with my right hand! There is a name for me that I can't remember.

My Dad was the same. Wrote right handed, but ate left handed & various other things. Thanks for the memory kick!!

No thanks love. In case you hadnt noticed, this is a discussion board and people are free to agree or disagree as they wish. Unless you are a moderator or admin your view are no more or less valid than mine. Therefore I want to say the post is more "look how wacky I am, than actually witty or funny" then its not up to you to tell I cannot.

Not only a cognitive help but also a Zen thing. A way of snapping us out of "automatic" reactions, so pick up your cup with your left hand or brush your teeth with the non-dominant hand now and then. Maybe walk down the stairs backwards .... which I do anyway from time to time when my knee's playing up. Start a new hobby, challenge yourself. I would put learning a new language at the top of the list, one that's enjoyable and easy NOT tedious and irksome. He sounds t & i ! Ask him to be the "subordinate" and you be the "dominant" person in your relationship - that might help his mental decline.

No she cant, but we can tell you that you are being very very boring. I am sure you feel that you won a "gotcha" and I hope that it made you feel good, even if it is a bit sad really.

HWS · 08/07/2026 23:11

I'm a handwriting tutor, some exercises I teach involve using both hands to engage both sides of the brain. While the evidence for specific "left brain/right brain" training claims is limited, practicing coordinated movements with both hands can help develop motor coordination.
However as his goal is broader cognitive support, learning a new skill (such as a new language or learning to play a new instrument) is supported by research as a way to strengthen and create new neural pathways through neuroplasticity. Different activities can support the brain in different ways, so combining physical coordination exercises with mentally challenging learning can be beneficial. No need to do everything with your non dominant hand . Best to have variety ! Hope this helps ..?

Downatthebeach · 08/07/2026 23:41

Is he for real? He certainly would not last long in my house keep telling me to use my Left hand! Any chance of trading him in for a Right handed model?
Is he losing the plot, repairing the lawn mower with his left hand? I honestly thought at first that this post was a joke. I am all for keeping the brain active but his behaviour is absolutely ridiculous.

I will share his theory at my next Book Club meeting, it will give the folks a laugh.

maxslice · 08/07/2026 23:42

I’ve read that it helps, but it’s not some kind of magical cure-all. Duolingo is a free language learning app you can use. Jigsaw puzzles help. Just about any kind of puzzle solving. Going to familiar places using a different rout, memorizing texts (like poetry or songs) playing memory based card games. Tell him to do his thing and you’ll do yours or he might find he’s been left.

Honestly, I'd kill the fucker and dig the hole with my left hand.

😆

Harmonypuss · 09/07/2026 00:36

Many of the world's most intelligent and creatively skilled people are left-handed, so I can't see the problem with trying to do things left-handed.
Those of us who are naturally 'lefties' have to do things to try to fit into your 'rightie' world, so yes, let's turn the tables for a change.

FatParrot · 09/07/2026 00:43

I’d use the opportunity to shovel him with your non-dominant hand 😆
Thank you for writing this; it’s given me a good giggle.
Genuinely, tell him to do what he wants, but he can fuck off when it comes to you.

superfrog2 · 09/07/2026 00:50

Nooo don’t be coerced into his foolishness. I see this in my parents who are 80.
my mum plays cards and does sudoku do not get involved with men’s cognitive behaviour I believe woman’s is different x

OnlyHasEyesForLoki · 09/07/2026 07:13

OMG I’m so glad I’m single at 58 and aren’t looking forward to 20 years of this kind of man crap! If someone shouted LEFT at me they’d be firmly told to EFF OFF!!

I can tell you but unfortunately I cannot make anyone a reasonable person or teach them that not all thoughts or opinions should be spoken or typed.
