DH wants us to go Left Handed. HELP.

Not sure if this is the correct thread, but here goes....

My DH and I have been together for over 30 years and, as we're getting on we've both become more aware of and conscious to avoid what I suppose is called Cognitive decline.

I enjoy crosswords and reading, so I think I'm at least using my brain daily. DH has never bothered much with what he ( Mostly jokingly ) calls 'Book-Learning'. Anyway, all of a sudden he's become an 'expert'. He told me he'd read an article ( Although I suspect he means he's seen a two- minute video on Tok Tok ) which claims using your left hand for tasks that you would normally use your right hand for can stave off cognitive decline and now he thinks this is a miracle cure-all.
And, of course, he's become obsessed, everything has to be done left-handed, and if he see's me using my right hand, he booms 'Left!'. I can be chopping vegetables or opening a jar of coffee and I'll suddenly hear 'Left!' in my earhole. I've told him it's annoying, but he's as stubborn as a goat that's been struck by lightning.
Yesterday he spent over two hours repairing the lawnmower left-handed and somehow thinks it's turned him into bloody Einstein in a cloth cap.
I've tried suggesting some 'alternatives', as I read that learning a new language is effective. I've always fancied trying Portuguese, or even Hausa or Finnish. But I suspect trying to entice him with any of this will be met with the equivalent of 'Foreign Muck', and it will be the Moussaka situation all over again.
Honestly, I could scream. I know men get fixated, especially as they get older but this is honestly too much. I'm no Carol Vorderman so can someone explain whether there's any truth in his claims of Neural-plasticity in the brain?
I really need to get some answers because if I keep hearing 'Left!' I may well go hard right! In fact, the other day whilst driving he started rabbitting Left! Left! and it was only when I realised that he was pointing to the entrance to the Garden Centre, that I heeded what he was saying.
So, is there any truth to it? And is anyone else's aging husband going as mad as an Aardwark at an all you can eat Ant-Buffet?
I better go, I can hear him rumaging in the airing cupboard and if he see's me typing with two hands it'll be all she wrote. Literally!

I'm sorry, Einstein in a cloth cap
made me laugh out loud!

Tell him to fuck off, left or right, it doesn't matter.

Fuck left off made me proper chortle 🤣🤣🤣

A couple of people at work started using their non-dominant hand for the mouse. I don’t know if it had any benefit.

Oh, don't be daft! OP's writing style is that of a mature adult, and I can't see a chatbot writing something like "I can Julienne with the best of them with my right, but with the left I'm more like Visigoth with a claw hammer" 😁

This is exactly the kind of thing ChatGPT writes...

I love your conviction ' It's been run througha chat-bot,' the similies are a giveaway. Erm...humans have been using similies in language well before chat GPT...where do you think they learned it? Your argument is nothing but nonsense confirmation bias.

Similes. You’re mis-spelling it. Yes, similes predate ChatGPT, obviously, but ChatGPT generates a particular style of simile, especially when you prompt it to be funny. So either you’re using ChatGPT. Or tragically and bafflingly, you’re copying its style because you think it’s genuinely witty. Rather like the way that people who do most of their reading on chat forums tend to pick up mis-spellings because they see ‘defiantly’ for ‘definitely’ and ‘rest bite’ for ‘respite” all the time, without any copy edited writing to compare them with.

waltzingparrot · 08/07/2026 11:11

I'd go for a compromise and agree to go left handed for one hour a day. After all it could prove useful if you ever lose the use of your dominant hand.

FckThisShit · 08/07/2026 11:12

Learning an instrument such as drums has been proven to be very effective at preventing cognitive decline as it builds the neuro pathways in the brain or something, it was on that Chris Hemsworth Limitless.

I'd shout back something random at your husband though. "LEFT" ..."TWAT" or similar.

Beachtastic · 08/07/2026 11:28

This bullying about ChatGPT/AI is just nasty.

It's obviously not: e.g. no "curly" quote marks, odd spacing around brackets, idiosyncratic use of uppercase in places.

Why can't people accept that some people are capable of expressing themselves without AI? Are you jealous of the compliments PPs have paid OP for her articulate and funny posts?

Oh good grief, Yes, I've just seen a video of some young Belgian's leaping about like Otters on heat...not for me I don't think, not with my ankles

Hmm

and joining the 5am club to get the brain fully ready for the day. Drum practice at 5am for the op.

erm, I disagree with that comment. Its not of a mature adult at all - Oh golly, that's an awful lot to consider. Parkour is that Japanese? It's nothing sexual is it? I don't want to be a prude but that might be a bit much, I'm nearly 70! just screams "I'm so funny me" where its really not.

I have read a similar study but they just suggested that you brush your teeth with your left hand.

I would be furious at him bellowing Left at me when I used my right hand and would be telling him in no uncertain terms to tell him to stop.

Do most people not swap hands to brush their teeth?

FckThisShit · 08/07/2026 14:52

Why would you swap hands?

I guess to get a different angle given the teeth are on both sides of your face. But I don't think you need to.

ShiraShira · 08/07/2026 17:56

Instead of following this ridiculous idea, you / he could find a piano teacher instead. Learning to play the piano - or any musical instrument - is really good for the brain, it’s challenging and enjoyable, and won’t interfere with the way you carry out everyday tasks!

Judecb · 08/07/2026 17:57

He's taking this to an extreme. If he wants to do this let him knock himself out, but there's no reason why you should. Having said this, I have heard that (occasionally) using your non dominant hand for things like brushing your teeth, is meant to be good for stimulating neurological pathways.

omghereistrouble · 08/07/2026 18:13

good way to have an accident if you ask me. I am bad enough using my right hand

4kids2cats · 08/07/2026 18:24

I recall that this was one of the things advocated by Dr Michael Mosley and I certainly know friends and relatives who do the left-handed tooth brushing thing as well as, I believe, standing on one leg whilst doing it. I have to admit that I do always think that although he had many excellent ideas for lengthening one’s life the fact that he died in such terribly unnecessary circumstances does rather take the edge off my keenness to regard him as a guru.
As someone whose ex (note) husband started this sort of fixation much younger than yours (not using shampoo or soap for weeks one summer, storing urine to put on the greenhouse plants, faddish diets, and a number of other no doubt well-researched but also ultimately deeply unattractive and peculiar things) I sympathise. I ultimately left my husband (not JUST because of these things but they definitely played a part). I’m sure you don’t need to do anything as drastic but I would certainly tell him very firmly that this screaming “LEFT!” all the time has to stop and I would also go to all the Zumba classes, book groups, language lessons etc that you can. Good luck!
