Boyfriend acts like he’s YouTube-famous

And not as a joke. He has had A YouTube channel for a couple of years and it has a few hundred subscribers. I’m supportive of him and wouldn’t tell him but he’s not actually that good at it. Hardly anyone watches his videos. There’s nothing particularly distinctive about his videos to draw an audience. He is just a random man talking about things he isn’t really qualified to talk about, and why would someone listen to his opinion? I don’t think he has really gone and done much research, and I can’t see why anyone would actually be interested in the videos. He acts like he’s famous, many people have made fun of him. it’s embarrassing. I feel like he’s too old to be acting like this.

At 13yo, that understandable. At 30yo, it’s ….. sad to say the least…

I mean becoming a professional footballer? At 30yo? In which world is he living in???
A famous YouTuber with a few hundreds followers? Again, in which world is he living in that it’s being famous?

What is he bringing into your life exactly? Because it’s not money, it’s not intelligence or maturity. So what is it?

Besides his view on the situation, what's everyone's deal with the age? There's many successful creators who are older than that, it's not a teenage thing.

What if your partner was a Creator and did have a following and was earning money through it, enough money it actually made a difference, what then?

Random example (not my own)... my wife does needle felting. It's not that good, but some of her friends have bought the items out of support/pity. I think she's a total loser. It's embarrassing that a girl in her 30s should do this. It's even branded and everything! What a narcissist!

Agree. I mean he may be going overboard but people clearly do not underestand how YouTube works. It's not a teenage thing and you can earn a mint off it if you are successful.

He's small now, may be being delusional in that he's famous but he may also breach the monetization and start getting you both money, passive income or a full wage.

To be fair the thought of sex with this 30 odd year old man child makes me want to pack my vulva in a padlock.

He is absolutely deluded. I doubt you trying to put him straight will make him see sense anyway as he seems too far past it and obviously thinks he's some sort of superstar.

That's not comparable though. The comparison would be 'my wife is in her 30s and is going to be a mechanic or a professional footballer one day and in the meantime she's set up a YouTube account where she talks about needlefelting, despite never having done it and not knowing anything about it and has spent lots of money on branded merchandise to promote it because she considers herself famous despite having not many followers'

It is not the having of the you tube channel that is the problem, it’s the fact that he’s pretending like it is amazing and he’s super famous with it when he isn’t. Also the idea of him still thinking he might be a footballer etc.

He is clearly delusional and probably shouldn't be spending on branding without actually having a brand.

However, is he actually wanting to be a professional footballer or just create content on football? Surely, being a professional footballer would be a reach anyway but why would you be doing YouTube if you were wanting to...

The hobby isn't the problem. It's the pretending to be famous about it and wanting to be a big footballer (which won't happen).

I assume the football point was a joke.

He takes his hobby a bit too seriously with branding etc but is he working, functioning, caring, switched on, a great partner with other interests apart from this? How does he behave as though he's famous apart from within the YT stuff itself? Is there something objectionable about the content (such as being inspired by that dipstick in a housecoat whose name has slipped my mind)? Does he present his opinion as fact? Does he belittle other people's opinions?

Does he talk about it over much? Perhaps you could address that 'it's great you have an interest but it has been dominating conversation lately. Can we talk about something else? Perhaps you could ask how my hobbies are going'.

If he is not the good points above then why are you with him?

OP didnt say lots of money on branded stuff, just branded. Could be headed letters for all we know or a logo on all his videos.

My point is seriously??? If only a few subscribers, wouldnt anyone be thrilled they have interest? Wouldn't anyone be looking at those numbers and either joking or seriously be saying they're famous? It may be a stupid hobby, but it's not harming anyone.

And no, I would be supporting my partner, no matter how stupid it looked, no matter how inexperienced she was.
