Who had children later in life...

Hi all,

I have a few worries about having children later in life.

Can you please all share your stories. Anyone here had children post 34/35? Do you have a partner who was 35 plus and had children with him?

How old were you when you met your partner? How old were you when you had your children?

Thanks in advance.

Met when I was 31 and he was 35, married following year, children born when I was 34 and 36. Pregnant on first month of trying both times, no issues with pregnancy, childbirth or children beyond the usual ones. Good luck!

I had DD at 33 (now 21) and DS at 35 (now 19) I had been with their DF for 8 yrs and hadn't felt ready for DC before then. The marriage didn't survive, but DC are fantastic.

Justhadmyhaircut · 13/07/2017 19:29

I met dh when he was 31 and I was 41. Has ds when I was 43.
(not first dc though)

GemmaB78 · 13/07/2017 19:30

Met DH at 36 (both of us), DS born at 37. He was "unplanned" so can't tell you about TTC. Had an easy pregnancy, difficult birth, and physically recovered easily. Psychologically, less so.

PinkyPudding · 13/07/2017 19:30

I had my son when I was 36 and DH was 37. Now he's 6 months old and we're considering having another. I'll be 37 soon so depending on how long it takes to conceive, I will be 37 or 38 when number 2 is born. Oh and we've been married 3 years.

BethennyFrankel · 13/07/2017 19:31

Post 34 isn't later in life!! Good grief!

Intransige · 13/07/2017 19:33

I think it depends a lot on circumstances.

I had children in my late 30s, and my husband is about the same age as I am. We'd been together for nearly ten years when we had kids - life kind of got in the way before then.

I had no issues falling pregnant, no pregnancy complications and straightforward deliveries. For which I am very grateful!

Family history on both sides is to have children relatively late, and my mum didn't go through menopause until her mid-50s.

So I guess genetics and luck were both on my side. I know the same isn't true for all of my friends.

37 ( me) and 35 (exW) for our second. The only real downside I can see is that I'm less likely to see my Grandkids into adulthood if my kids have them as late as she and I did.

TinyDancer69 · 13/07/2017 19:37

I had my one and only beautiful DS when I was 43 😊I waited a while and he was worth it!

Ps - 34/35 is later in life?? C'mon!

Brighteyes27 · 13/07/2017 19:39

Met 32 married at 35 had first at 38 and second at 39.

I have a couple of health conditions I love them to but and appreciate them probably too much but I am shattered now at 52 with an 12 and 13 year old. Maybe if I had got pregnant as soon as we got married it would have been less tiring but it took us a while to conceive and had several miscarriages. But then if I had had them straight away I might not have enjoyed or appreciated them as much.

TempsPerdu · 13/07/2017 19:45

Currently 17 weeks pregnant with my first at 37. DP is 43 (also his first DC). We've been together for 15 years but have only recently become broody! My own parents were older too (34 and 41 when I was born), so later parenthood is completely normal to me, plus we're in London, where waiting until '30s for your first seems to be the norm, especially among professionals.

Pregnancy seems to be going OK so far - the usual niggles like nausea and tiredness, but nothing major. Only thing I would say is that we've never hankered after a big family and know we'd be content with just the one - had we definitely wanted 2 or 3 we might have got a move on earlier!

EezerGoode · 13/07/2017 19:49

Number 4.. I was 37. He was 38. Compared to my twenties when I had kids...fuck it was hard nearing 40 with a toddler ..now mid :40s and I've no energy at all....I've friends having their first at 40. They seem fine.so it's probably just me

Waterlow · 13/07/2017 19:51

First two pregnancies, at 34 and 36, were fast to conceive, relatively easy pregnancies, not much difference between them. Last pregnancy, at 40, took two years and two miscarriages, was utterly exhausting, and I had swollen legs for the first time. All three births were uncomplicated SVDs, though the first caused me a lot of damage. All dc healthy and bright.

Dc3 got in just under the wire, as I began peri-menopause at 41/42, which was quite a surprise.

crocodilesoup · 13/07/2017 19:52

Are you writing an article? That's a lot of questions Hmm

elQuintoConyo · 13/07/2017 19:53

Met at 23me/25him, married at 35/37, had DS at 36.

Conceived in the first month of trying (we'd just watched episode 1 of The Walking Dead and i needed "comforting" WinkGrin ).

Pregnancy was ok, bit of puke, loads of nausea, fanny daggers towards the end, an insane amount of farting. Birth was horrific, still not fixed mentally or physically. He is now 5.5yo and i'm 42.

DH and I wanted one child.

My mother and sister both got pregnant at the drop of a hat (or a condom), but i'm still not convinced ease of getting pregnant is genetic.

Willing2acceptAdvice · 13/07/2017 19:53

No, I'm a police officer in real life. I'm just a guy who has a few worries about a few things 😊

Oh, and a friend and her husband had ivf twins three months before she turned fifty. They are now 4.5yo. She says they make her feel younger Grin

alabasterangel · 13/07/2017 19:55

I had DC1 at 37 and DC2 at 39. DH is 10 years older than me. All fine. Not unique in our social or local demographic by a long chalk!

How later in life are you? 40s? 50s?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 13/07/2017 19:56

Met DH when I was 32 he was 39

DD born at 35 nearly 36 and 43

DS I was 38 he was 45

MabelBee · 13/07/2017 19:56

We met when I was 27, married at 34, twins at 37, another baby at 39. I absolutely agree that this is not late in life! This is normal age for having babies in my social circle. My friends and I are now all early to mid forties with children ranging from newborn to 8ish.

Brahms3rdracket · 13/07/2017 19:58

Met at 20 (me) and 24 (DP). Had our DCs when I was 33, 35 and 42. He was 37, 39 & 46.

It took two years to conceive the first one, two months the second and two seconds after taking my last pill for the third and final one.

BikeRunSki · 13/07/2017 19:58

Met at 26 (me)/22!(DH); married at 29/25; DC1 at 37/33, DC2 at 40 (3'weeks before my 41st Birthday).

No issues with conceiving (first cycle both times), and no age related pg problems.

Only real problem is that all my DC's grandparents are in their mid 70s so may not be around much longer.

Fightthebear · 13/07/2017 19:58

36 and 42 for me.

What are your worries op?
