I accidentally found out my DP is going to propose...and i dont like the ring

Ok so tonight myself, DS and DP are watching in the night garden. DS is toddling about playing with DPs kindle and he manages to use it to open Amazon to show me that my other half has an engagement ring in the basket. I may have gone a slightly strange colour but naturally DP didn't even notice (I'm assuming he was too busy watching makka pakka). Unfortunately, it's not a particularly nice ring.

I'm not hankering for a really expensive ring but I had hoped that he would make it to a jewellers (there's actually a jewellery workshop in the village, who have known his family for years) or find something a little more special than Amazon. I don't have anything against Amazon either it's just I don't want my engagement ring coming from the place I order textbooks from. He also has a tendency to buy everything from Amazon no matter what the occasion. (birthday/Christmas/mothers day/fathers day). I had hoped something as special as an engagement ring would be the exception but clearly not.

We're planning our first holiday away together without DS at the end of this month (24th) so I'm fairly certain he'll be planning to pop the question then. I can't steer him towards a ring I would like or drop hints without revealing I know what he's up to. So basically I have a month or so to stew. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Xx

If you do decide to delete it, delete everything in his basket/wish list, not just the ring!

Moominsarehippos · 08/03/2013 17:19

Can we have a link please?

I don't have an engagement ring and my husband knew I didn't like rings. We both discussed when to get married. I find the "bloke decides when to discuss marriage and chooses the ring" idea very sexist. I think the fact that you see an engagement ring and get upset because you don't like the ring not pleased you may get married concerning though. Rings can usually be returned or exchanged and it may as others say just be a token ring for the proposal.

Moominsarehippos · 09/03/2013 11:58

I chose both of mine.

scrumpkin · 09/03/2013 12:07

I NEED to see the ring Grin

I agree with others who have said change it for a selection for ones you do like so at least it will still be a surprise as to which one it is.

I did talk to DP about it as i couldnt hold it in any longer
Me - "I saw your amazon basket"
Him - "Id have preferred it if you didnt"
Me - "DONT BUY ME THAT RING ITS UGLY"
Him - "I wasnt going to. I was looking in general so that Id know about the different shapes and things so that when I went into the jewellers Id sort of know what to look for"
Me - "Oh, I guess thats ok"
Him - "I saw your laptop btw, did you start a thread complaining about me?"

ummmm...... Blush

Are you sure that's not for Mothers Day looking at the price?

trikken · 09/03/2013 12:28

Whoops. Did quite like that ring tho.

littlejo67 · 09/03/2013 12:29

Crossed posts. I think you deserved that one!

almostanotherday · 09/03/2013 12:30

Grin Whoops

Merguez · 09/03/2013 12:31

You need to explain to him that it is customary for the man to spend a month's salary on an engagement ring!!

enormouse · 09/03/2013 12:31

hahaha i did indeed. Im fully prepared to admit i was in the wrong. Cooked him a lasagne (His favourite meal) by way of apology and all is back to normal (as normal as can be) in casa enormouse.

It's £26 (and really pretty!). Maybe it's a token ring just so you have a little box to open when he proposes. I think it's really romantic! (if there's a tragic romantic emoticon, pls insert here...). Take it for what it is - here's a man, standing in front of you, asking you to be with him for the rest of his life. Ring sming - that proposal is the most important thing.

enormouse · 09/03/2013 12:34

Merguez he says he was actually looking at it in a "who buys a £35 ring??" sort of way and when he clicked on it to see what it was like it ended up in the basket

Oops! Must learn to check if things have moved on while I'm drafting...

Dillydollydaydream · 09/03/2013 12:35

It would be a now ring actually if it was platinum and real diamonds

Gruntfuttocks · 09/03/2013 12:36

All that, and then it's a £26 trinket, obviously not a serious engagement ring, and then you leave the thread open for him to find.....jeepers, you ARE having a bad day!

Dillydollydaydream · 09/03/2013 12:36

^nice even!

enormouse · 09/03/2013 12:37

kday agree, i wont jump the gun on this again and let him do it his way and in his own time. I should have trusted his judgement more. (even though its quite difficult to say that of a man who put the dishwasher on with just 5 plates in it).

What's a jewellery "workshop"? I keep getting visions of build a bear...Grin

enormouse · 09/03/2013 12:47

That would be great actually. Maybe you could record a message on to it? the jewellery place has 2 floors and the bottom floor is where they make the jewellery and the 2nd is a showroom.

Btw DrRanj are you named after the guy on Get well soon? on cbeebies? Smile
