What's the age difference between you & your partner? & do you/ have ever been given grief for it?

This thread is more to satisfy my nosiness, oop i mean my thirst for knowledge then anything else, so basically what it says on the title :D

I was wondering what age differences posters have in relation to their partners and if any have ever had any grief/ comments/ etc, pretty much anything?

I should confess that I ask this as well partly due to the fact that after 10 years of being with my partner, 2 dc's later, a menagerie of pets people still feel the need to pass comment on the 12 year age difference. Now we may split next week (this would never happen by the way) but doesn't what we had together mean it was a success despite it not lasting and all those saying I told you so can f*ck off!! I'm sorry I'm rambling now!!

Bleedingheart, oh I love talking about children's television with my DH as he never has a clue what I'm on about. We might as well have been raised in different countries let alone decades. :)

AndiMac · 10/09/2012 14:46

Hah! My husband and I are from different countries, so the pronounced differences in TV and pop culture knowledge are even more there! I like to put it to that, rather than me being eons older than him.

AdoraBell · 10/09/2012 14:48

12 years difference here and the only comment I have had to my face was a Chilean lady who said Shock what did your mother say? turns out the father of her first dc is about 40 years older she is.

pinklantern · 10/09/2012 14:51

I have the classic 'half the mans age plus 7' age gap and it works beautifully.

LittleSugaPlum · 10/09/2012 14:53

Theres 9 years between DH and I. Im 25 and hes 34.

When i was 18, i had a boyfriend that was 43.
I ve also had a boyfriend at 48 when i was 22ish.
Between the ages of 18-22 i ve dated people from the age of 30 - 48.

Never once saw the problem, others did mention that its like dating your dad, but age is just a number, and i never even thought about age gaps to be honest.

IsSpringSprangedYet · 10/09/2012 15:00

22 years. He is 3 months younger than my dad, but certainly doesn't look the same age. Some have said he could pass as late 30's / early 40's little while ago now though

My dad thought it was hilarious when he first found out and family and friends seem not bothered. We laugh about it sometimes, particularly if he refers to something he was doing in the early 80's, when I was born. We've been together 8 years, married 4 and have three DC and a fourth on the way and couldn't be happier. I luffs him Grin

ledkr · 10/09/2012 15:02

My dh is 12 years younger. I was doubtful at first but 6 years on we are great together. I look a bit younger than my 44 yrs I guess and we have a baby too so I guess people don,t think to comment.I do worry about me being 70 and him only 58 but we love each other so what should we do,just split up?
I was married to a guy my own age for years and he cheated so ill take my chances.
ps he is rather fit too Grin

StrawberryTot · 10/09/2012 15:03

MmeGuillotine - my other half is alternative too very heavily tattooed, very long hair, plus shaved and die hard metal lover plus he makes a living drawing on people, i on the other hand in comparison am not. I'm tattooed and pierced but mine are harder to spot Grin
Really enjoying reading all the responses, thank you!!

MmeGuillotine · 10/09/2012 15:06

I don't even have my ears pierced as I'm too cowardly but am about to get them done as well as my first tattoo just as soon as I hit my Slimming World target and er have less arm. ;)

I think that being alternative marks us both out as 'immature' as far as a lot of people are concerned anyway so our actual ages become immaterial. ;)

StrawberryTot · 10/09/2012 15:12

MmeGuillotine i often get told off when he comes hone from work as my Lady Gaga had invaded his ipod haha. Good luck on meeting your target and congratulations on your future tattoo and piercing Grin may you have many more to come!!!

MmeGuillotine · 10/09/2012 15:14

Thank you! I'm obsessed with tattoos right now as I'm trying to find out as much as possible before I get mine done so I know what to expect. :)

My DH complains about my Lady Gaga 'accidentally' getting onto the car playlist... ;)

StrawberryTot · 10/09/2012 15:18

If you have any MmeGuillotine feel free to message me any queries or questions. I used to work in a tattoo and piecing studio and obviously my partner still works in one Grin

DH is almost 13 years older than me. Plenty of people have made comments, but nothing which has bothered us in particular - it has been an issue for our families - or was at the beginning - but I consider that to be their problem and not ours.

rubycon · 10/09/2012 15:20

I was 12 years older than my XH - I was replaced by someone 25 years my junior when I was 56 - after 22 years of marriage. It stung at the time, but I'm happier now with my DP who is 6 years younger than me.

MmeGuillotine · 10/09/2012 15:22

Strawberry, thanks so much! Will do! :D

weblette · 10/09/2012 15:24

Dh is 20 years older, never had any grief from family/friends/strangers even.

javotte · 10/09/2012 15:28

DH is 8 years older. It has never been an issue. He wouldn't tell me his age when we began dating - apparently he thought I was going to run away screaming at the thought of an elderly 31-year-old.

WingDefence · 10/09/2012 15:31

DH is 16 years older but we've not had any grief (to our faces anyway).

I also do rib DH about it sometimes - usually when he's reminiscing about gigs he went to in the 70s as a teenager and I was not yet born or a toddler Grin

cat · 11/09/2012 17:45

12 years seems to be a very common age gap

hpsaucy · 11/09/2012 17:53

My DH is 22 years older than me. We've been together 13 years, married for 9 years.

I've had a few comments, like I was only after him for his money!!! (what money, he must still be bloody hiding it!!) also more recently after DH was rushed into hospital with a heart problem (which wasn't age related) a mum at the school kindly informed me that what you get with having a older husband!!!!

balotelli · 11/09/2012 18:09

13 years between DW and me.

When she was in hosp with a kidney stone the nurse wanted to know where her dad was when i was late one day! She hasnt seen her dad for 15 years. The Nurse never spoke to us again!

I dony think I look that old but the other day while playing in the park with my DD someone asked if she was enjoying her day out with her granddad!! DD just looked bemused.

whogivesaduck1 · 12/09/2012 00:07

im 24, DP is 42. We have never faced any horrible comments. A couple of children have said before about 'my daddy' or one hilarious child ' my granddad'! It doe snot bother me in the slightest, I tease DP and find it quite funny. although i think i look young, my DP is also quite young looking. people do seem surprised that he is 42, which he LOVES!

whogivesaduck1 · 12/09/2012 00:07

oh and we have been together for 4yrs and we are getting married next year!

BookieMonster · 12/09/2012 00:25

I'm 7 years younger than DH. The age difference has never caused comment but the fact I was so young (21) when I met DH did. Together for 16 years, married for 14 soon!
