What's the age difference between you & your partner? & do you/ have ever been given grief for it?

This thread is more to satisfy my nosiness, oop i mean my thirst for knowledge then anything else, so basically what it says on the title :D

I was wondering what age differences posters have in relation to their partners and if any have ever had any grief/ comments/ etc, pretty much anything?

I should confess that I ask this as well partly due to the fact that after 10 years of being with my partner, 2 dc's later, a menagerie of pets people still feel the need to pass comment on the 12 year age difference. Now we may split next week (this would never happen by the way) but doesn't what we had together mean it was a success despite it not lasting and all those saying I told you so can f*ck off!! I'm sorry I'm rambling now!!

BellaoftheBalls - thankfully I've never been mistaken for his daughter but my dc's are often referred to as my younger siblings Blush

Dp is 12 years older, never been given grief for it. I dont think its a big enough age gap to cause grief.

I was just 17 when I met him and he was 29.
Im 29 now and Shock and the thought of doing a 17 year old!

StaceeJaxx · 10/09/2012 13:28

There's only 4 years between us, but because we got together so young (me 16 him 20) loads of people gave us stick for years saying it wouldn't last. He especially got stick off his mates. 18 years later I think we can put 2 fingers up to them and their comments. Grin

Dawndonna · 10/09/2012 13:39

After 20 years, surprisingly I'm STILL 12 years older than my dh and we STILL get comments. I am called his Mum at the hospital, despite the fact that he has more grey than me and walks with a stick. I get questioned about it by people, recently new neighbours and I'm bored with it.
Replies now are rarely polite.

CinnamonSal · 10/09/2012 13:44

I am 7 years older than my DP. My family didnt think it the best idea to begin with but no comments since. To be fair he can be pretty immature at times so they might of had a point!

TheLazyGirlBlog · 10/09/2012 13:44

BellaoftheBalls was mistaken for his sister once but his old boss. Even though he was 31 when we met, he looked about 25 (good genes bless him) so 18 and 25 I can see why.

missymoomoomee · 10/09/2012 13:48

strawberry in all honestly I really never minded the negative comments anyway, they were mostly along the lines of how did DH manage to convince someone so gorgeous to marry him selfish bitch not caring if hubby gets insulted so long as I'm ok in fact I would really appreciate it if someone said that now haha.

It was funny when I had DD2, DSS was visiting us for the week and the health visitor came over when DH was at the shop, she assumed he was my hubby and started talking about my bleeding and my breasts, I have never seen anyone look so mortified as him when she was saying it, and as her when DH walked in and I introduced him haha. Makes me laugh even now.

ordinarygull · 10/09/2012 13:49

I'm 46 and my partner is 68 - never been a problem, although I am rather guilty of teasing him about his age...

LulaTheOneAndOnlyMrsPistorius · 10/09/2012 13:53

DH is 5 years 2 months younger than me so for 2 months of the year there is a 6 year age gap. 5 years the rest of the time.

I like having a toyboy Grin

topbannana · 10/09/2012 13:54

Ooh shaggingarea since we are getting competitive then.... :o
DH comes under the heading of Very Old Man, whereas I am youthful, lithe and charming :)
He is 26 years older but it simply does not register anymore, and I have long got past feeling self conscious about it. We are very vomit inducingly happy and, though people often comment how nice it is for me to take my Grandad out for the day, we have never had any horrifically rude comments (at least not in earshot!)

AlwaysHoldingOnToStars · 10/09/2012 13:54

DH is 10 years older than me, and we started going out when I was 17. We've never had any comments really though. My mum has always been fine with it, and his parents have never said a word. We've been together nearly 20 years now.

hairytale · 10/09/2012 13:56

Four years younger. Never had a comment --as if anything, he lo

hairytale · 10/09/2012 13:57

Four years younger. Never had a comment as if anything, he looks older

ILiveInAPineapple · 10/09/2012 13:57

Only 18 months between us, but I was still called a child bride as I was only just 20 when we got married! Was told by friend is was too young, would never last etc, and been married for 10yrs now.

When we started going out, I was 18 and he was 20, so nothing groundbreaking.

Just goes to show that people always like to make a comment on other people's situations, and generally they should just mind their own business ;-)

OhTheConfusion · 10/09/2012 13:59

DH is 13years older than me. He is closer in age to my mother than me.
The only person who really commented was my now MIL Hmm.

Melindaaa · 10/09/2012 14:05

17 years

Never had a single negative comment.

RowanMumsnet · 10/09/2012 14:08

16 Years, DD was asked when she took DP into local shop 'is this your grandad?'

I love him, so don't give a hoot

AndiMac · 10/09/2012 14:17

I'm 7 years older than my husband. We met when I was 31 and he was 24. I never would have pictured us together because of the age difference, which is probably one of the reasons we ended up together. No looks of desperately single on my face when we met up as friends at first.

When we first started going out, friends used to joke about me robbing the cradle or calling me Demi (when she had Ashton). But it was all light-hearted and I never thought it a problem. Now he looks closer to my age due to a bit of balding, so no one really even knows unless we bring it up, and then it's usually just a mention of surprise and it's over.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 10/09/2012 14:17

26 years and how many months ?

Grin
Redknickerswillstoptrains · 10/09/2012 14:20

DH is 12 years older, been together 12 years 3 dc.

CreepyCrawly · 10/09/2012 14:20

9 years here. We did get a fair bit of grief when we first met, because I was 16. But we've been together 6 years now, married for a year and have a baby on the way. We both had our 'big' birthdays last year, 21 and 30.

My mum and dad have a 12 year age gap.

bleedingheart · 10/09/2012 14:26

12years here; some negative comments when we first got together but those people have seen their relationships end while ours as become a kind of touchstone for normality so..?
He looks a good 5-10yrs younger than he is and I have always been mature so i don't notice until he talks about children's tv.

MmeGuillotine · 10/09/2012 14:26

My DH is eight years younger than me and I've never had anyone comment on it. I get the impression though that because um we're both of an alternative persuasion (ie I'm a stonking great goth with stupid pink hair and he has a face full of piercings) people assume we're both about the same age.
