Do these things exist? did you get the romantic proposal you dreamed off? or did you settle for a less romantic one???

What a prat! Did you report him? Perhaps that would have caused more trouble though. Sounds like he may have had 'little man syndrome' - trying to prove his power... idiot.

JonesTheSteam · 09/01/2006 21:49

Yeah - rang the police - they came round and talked to him.

He denied it totally, but his girlfriend had obviously been crying and wouldn't look the police in the eye, or speak to them.

DH moved pretty quickly after that.

He (the neighbour) had only moved in two days before!!!!

myturn · 09/01/2006 21:54

Good for you!! Perhaps he was extra stressed from the move, but absolutely no excuse whatsoever. Poor girlfriend. You had a lucky excape.

myturn · 09/01/2006 21:55

escape even!!

JonesTheSteam · 09/01/2006 21:57

Nah - think he was just a thug - the blacked out windows of his Vauxhall Nova and the baseball cap gave it away!!!!!!

myturn · 09/01/2006 21:57

Lol!!!

Pixiefish · 09/01/2006 22:06

He wanted to propose at the top of the Eiffel tower but I wouldn't go up the last bit as I'm scared of heights (didn't know I was spoiling his plot lol)

In the end he texted me at work

zaphod · 09/01/2006 22:14

I asked dh. It was a leap year, we were sitting in the pub...... I'll never forget it. I just asked dh if he remembered, and he thought it was at Christmas (no), and in a completely different pub. Obviously not a earth shattering proposal then.

In a cottage on the Great Ocean Road, Victoria. We'd spent a few days in Melbourne, then planned to drive to Adelaide, winding along the Great Ocean Road. He'd disappeared when we browsing some posh shops and then when I found him again he refused to take his coat off, or even sit on the tram when we left! Definitley thought something was going on, but getting married had been a sore point so was still not getting my hopes up. So we took off in the hire car, had a beautiful day and stayed in the this gorgeous cottage. Over a bottle of wine, he whips out a Tiffany's bag and I think 'oh, lovely he bought me earrings' for some bizarre reason. Then he opens the box and holds it out and I squealed and slapped him, screaming 'You've got to say it, make sure you say it!'. He looked a little put out and said ' I was going to, but you started hitting me'. So somewhat romantic! Spent the night getting out of bed and sneaking to the loo to admire my new ring!

Beetrootfultoyourself · 09/01/2006 22:22

He was going into hospital to have his nose 'done'. I was 5 weeks pregnant and did a pretned waddle down the road. He was admitted. All around ther were men with bleedingnoses, and bandages and football playing int he background. He asked me to marry him...how sweet and romantic...he said it was the waddle

paolosgirl · 09/01/2006 22:24

On the ramparts(sp?!) of Stirling Castle on bended knee. Well, half bended knee amd half standing - every time he started the romantic speil, another busload of American tourists appeared from nowhere!

It was a lovely, romantic day - the best

Heathcliffscathy · 09/01/2006 22:50

in a field full of bluebells on an island in the middle of a loch in scotland....we'd rowed out by boat and he'd smuggled a bottle of champagne and two glasses with him....i said yes and burst into tears...he built a fire and we sat by it drinking....

eidsvold · 10/01/2006 00:39

he had asked me a number of times and I had said yes jokingly - we had not been together very long at all.... I then went back to Aus for three weeks and the day I got back - he pulled out this gorgeous solitaire diamond and said this was the last time he was asking - not amazingly romantic but who cares... two dds and a move to the other side of the world - we are still together despite some tough times.

Some of these are really funny - love the ice cream flamesparrow!

Not read all the posts but am I the only one to have had 2 dh's?!! Can't rem a thing about first dh but did get fancy 'Diana' style ring which we chose together.

2nd dh he asked me about a week after we started going together... well not ask exactly he just stated that he wanted to marry me as we were driving in the car. I was a tad shocked (still married to dh1 at that point). It took 9 years to finally get round to it, very romantic in Gibraltar. Didn't get a ring though, didn't really want one but got beautiful and expensive Raymond Weil watch instead.

Parsleypants · 10/01/2006 10:04

Dh told me that he was going to marry me within a month of getting together . I was convinced he would do it on Millennium Eve but oh no - why propose in a romantic hotel when you can do the deed three days later in the pouring rain whilst walking down the street en route to buy a duvet cover in the John Lewis sale? He then said "Well, you can have a proper ring or really nice wardrobes in the bedroom, I can't afford both!" Fool that I was, I chose the wardrobes and we bought a white gold and cubic zirconia (sp?) ring - finally bought a proper ring a year after we got married and had just had ds!

rudeynudey · 10/01/2006 10:26

I have never told another person the real way dh proposed!!!

He surprised me with a trip to Paris. Got there in the evening and in the morning after "doing it" and with him still on top of me he said "marry me please". Of course I said yes!!! I was a little disappointed there was no one knee and ring etc. But the in the evening we went out to a restuarnt and when we had finished he then got down on his knee and asked again with a ring!!! - that's the clean version that we tell people!!!

veuveclicquot · 10/01/2006 10:48

Proposal No 1) At super posh hotel that I'd paid for after lots of drinks. I was thrilled but the next morning he took back his ring and for the next 8 years pretended it hadn't happened.

Proposal No 2) When I announced that DD and I were going to Australia whether he liked it or not - In Germany, on our balcony 'Oh alright then I'll marry yer'. I told him to sod off.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 10/01/2006 10:59

VC

He took the ring back and pretended it hadn't happenned..

When he asked for it back I would have said certainly dear, bend over, I would have then inserted it in a place that would have seriously reduced its resale value.

bakedpotato · 10/01/2006 11:05

can't believe all these bended knees!

Paris, here, too, my birthday treat
Eating amazing dauphinoisse in a restaurant
He went rather white and asked me
I was terrified, and kept him hanging on for a week during which he moped around looking satisfyingly pitiful and finally said yes while eating fishcakes in front of the telly back home
How shameful that food looms so large in my story

gravity · 10/01/2006 11:07

some of these are great! - mine, gee what a nice memory- on my birthday we'd been clubbing with friends, he drove me to Kings Park overlooking the city, took me to the look out where he had been naturalised, got down on bended knee and shone the most beautiful rock at me! then we went to a hotel and had the most fantastic night....... oh happier days!

gravity · 10/01/2006 11:09

aah... baked potato, my dh's bended knee was rather wonky though.... too many knee reconstructions! but he tried!

RachD · 10/01/2006 11:12

No, wasn't romantic, but I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

One night, lying in bed, he said " will you marry me"
I said "yes, of course"
He said "terrific" and rolled over and started snoring.

We had been together about 3 months (having had the whole love at first sight thing) when I bought him a trip to Amsterdam for his birthday. As you may know (I didn't although he still won't believe me!!) Amsterdam is famous for diamonds. So about 2 weeks before he asked me if I would like us to choose a diamond for my engagement ring while we were there (we had talked about getting married after about a week together) but that he didn't want to propose as I still had to meet his parents. I thought that would be lovely, so once we arrived we went to a couple of diamond factories. In the second one we found this beautiful emerald cut diamond that they fit into a simple platinum setting. We had to go back the next day to collect it. Once we did he said i couldn't look at it again until he proposed. It was a lovely spring day and we sat in a beautiful square with drinks and started talking about what we would tell people about our weekend. I didn't want to tell anyone until he had proposed but he was saying it was a shame we couldn't tell anyone. He then said 'Of course there is a way we could tell them' and I still didn't get it. Next thing I knew he was down on one knee with the ring in his hand asking me to marry him. I was very shocked, which seems a bit silly in retrospect after what we had been doing, and asked him if he was sure. Very quickly after I said yes! He said that he had never intended to ask there but had realised this would be the only chance he would have to surprise me with his proposal as once we got home I would be expecting it. And that was more important than me meeting his parents.

I love him more now than I ever thought possible and we are expecting our little boy in Feb!

In the middle of the Venezuelan rainforest underneath a waterfall (or rather behind it where someone had carved a path). However, before you think it sounds like a Bounty commercial, we had been in the jungle for 3 days, hadn't washed, were more filthy and smelly than I have ever been and were both recovering from dysentery. Dh was actually wearing my t-shirt as his own was too wet and disgusting to put on. What was really, really amazing though was that earlier that morning we had been to another waterfall and our guide told us that it was a wishing place and that we should dunk ourselves under the water and make a wish. I wished to marry dh - it took 2 hours for my wish to come true.
