Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to marry Pip, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

So now we know who bonked George on the head. Will the stunning revelation Hmm lead to anything interesting or credible happening? Answers on a postcard, please!

Will Alice and Rex become an item? Will Amber come to her senses? Has Adam's constant languor and fatigue now removed his ability to speak on air?

Over to you!

And I don't know why my asterisk is showing up as a bullet point!

Markdown

FatRosie · 08/03/2026 18:23

The same happens with a - followed by a space.

A number followed by a full stop becomes a numbered bullet.

  • asterisk
  • dash
  • A three followed by a .
  • A one followes by a .

A hash sign is a heading, 2 hash signs a 2nd level heading etc.

four hashes

*asterisk with no space after it.

Does Kate have ANY redeeming features?

Does Kate have ANY redeeming features?

Not that I can remember!

Does Kate have ANY redeeming features?

Um... she isn't deliberately cruel to animals?

TheUsualChaos · 08/03/2026 20:25

Would agree with @Sidebeforeself. Have felt myself withdrawing from the thread lately. Partly that life has been busy and I'm a bit behind with episodes but mainly that when I have popped on to the thread recently to catch up it has felt rather out of sorts here. A bit too negative and hostile rather than the welcome relief from life's stresses. Sort of kills the inclination to join in.

TheUsualChaos · 08/03/2026 20:39

Kate definitely does have some good qualities! Just give me a minute....

...

...

Oh yes! She's always so kind to wealthy American tourists in need who could easily afford the nice local hotels but would rather turf someone out of their own home instead. The angel of Ambridge really!

DeanElderberry · 08/03/2026 16:46

I mis-spelled 'consonant' as 'vowel'.

So it's just as well that I have been repeating that mis-spelling doesn't matter, it's singling one name out from and treating it as more complicated than, for example Freddie/Freddy Lynda/Linda Lilian/Lillian Lawrence/Laurence Carol/Carole/Caryl Philip/Phillip.

Thank God Ambridge doesn't have a Geoffrey/Jeffrey.

I don't think it's being singled our, all of your examples are regularly mis spelled and NO ONE CARES.

BeatriceBatchelor · 08/03/2026 20:47

I enjoyed tonight's episode. Except the multiple mentions of Martha. Alice & Rex could work as a couple. And Kirsty seems quite content with her FWB arrangement with Erik.

The car beeping at George could be ominous.

I CARE!

Hercisback · 08/03/2026 20:51

Why?

Really, they're name on a SPOKEN drama show.

There is no need to be patronising.

Hercisback · 08/03/2026 21:00

Says you that picks people up for incorrect spelling of a fictional name....

Anyway can we please keep this a safe haven on MN of kindness and positive intentions from posters.

DeanElderberry · 08/03/2026 21:03

I don't care how they are spelled or mis-spelled.

I care that the one Irish name in the bunch is singled out as 'unspellable'.

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/03/2026 21:06

FatRosie · 08/03/2026 20:58

There is no need to be patronising.

The only way we know how they are spelled is to look at the cast list and I never do that so I live in blissful ignorance. The spellings I do know are from this thread but I really don't care that much. It's radio and I listen to it.

DeanElderberry · 08/03/2026 21:06

I also care about what that allegedly speeding car was doing, when George went for a pee. Is there going to be a Tragic Road Death of Ambridge Father to Be?

Hercisback · 08/03/2026 21:11

DeanElderberry · 08/03/2026 21:03

I don't care how they are spelled or mis-spelled.

I care that the one Irish name in the bunch is singled out as 'unspellable'.

Multiple posters and posts show this isn't the case. Linda, lynda Freddie, freddy are all the same as ruarir, ruairi, ruari etc....even Rory is phonetically the same.

You're reading offence where none is intended.

FatRosie · 08/03/2026 21:12

The brothers in Aberdeen who Helen said won the Food & Farming award, do they have a dairy and might they be looking for a cheesemaker?

Agapornis · 08/03/2026 21:15

I too enjoyed the horror in Tracey's voice at the thought of Helen being her neighbour.

Another mildly annoying incident of time travel tonight. Alice said "don't tell anyone, especially not dad, he made a clumsy attempt to set us up a few weeks ago", but it was only on the 26th, 10 days ago.

I'm glad Kirsty's arrangement with Erik is still going strong.

FatRosie · 08/03/2026 21:20

@CaptainMyCaptain , for example Freddie/Freddy Lynda/Linda Lilian/Lillian Lawrence/Laurence Carol/Carole/Caryl Philip/Phillip.
Freddie is the most used spelling, as are Carol, Lilian and Philip.
Lynda just isn't a Linda, and it's been mentioned on air that she's Lynda.

I wondered about the car too.

Hercisback · 08/03/2026 21:20

I wish we heard more of. Kirsty and Eric. They're such a good couple. Perfect chalk and cheese.

FatRosie · 08/03/2026 21:23

He's Erik. Smile

DeanElderberry · 08/03/2026 21:27

The post that prompted my objection was on Friday morning. I won't mention the poster's name but I found

They went in November because What"s-his-spelling could book the holiday for cheap.

offensive.

As has been demonstrated, there are lots of names with alternative spellings.

Um... she isn't deliberately cruel to animals?

So she’s unintentionally cruel to animals? Interesting 🤔
