Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to marry Pip, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

So now we know who bonked George on the head. Will the stunning revelation Hmm lead to anything interesting or credible happening? Answers on a postcard, please!

Will Alice and Rex become an item? Will Amber come to her senses? Has Adam's constant languor and fatigue now removed his ability to speak on air?

Over to you!

There are about a dozen different ways of spelling Ruairi. I would assume anyone who misspelled it just made an innocent mistake. Who, on this thread, has laughed at or mocked the name because it’s foreign? I’m not sure if I’ve missed something.

Brefugee · 07/03/2026 14:47

Since i'm one of the ones who was accused of being - xenophobic rather than racist? - Totally In The Wrong (for not caring to look up how it is spelled for the reason i gave at the time: I simply don't care enough about The Archers in general and that character in particular to look up on the site how to spell it - I'm going to add my last piece on this issue. I simply do not car enough how the SW or the PTB in Archerland spell his name. I had already seen enough different spellings on these threads to be unsure, so added "(sp?") each time i wrote his name. And got jumped on.

I CBA with that. So from no on he will be, for me, That Character, or He Who Can't Be Named (HWCBN) and the umbrige takers can lump it. (laughs hollowly with a celtic first name that nobody in the history of anything, let alone Starbuck's has ever spelled correctly first time, and a surname that nobody where i live, and plenty of people where it comes from come to think of it, can pronounce properly. Also celtic)

Brefugee · 07/03/2026 14:48

as a change of subject: does anyone else think that Helen's Great House Purchase Saga will end with her in the Farmhouse, and Tony (who is in a snit because of the Anguses) will decide to finally build his house?

And after Helen has gone with her offspring - can we PLEASE have at least one scene chez Sausageboy and Gnasher where they do a "phew! i thought they were NEVER leaving"? PLEASE?

Bruisername · 07/03/2026 14:01

But the mis spelling was the problem

people were constantly being pulled up on it and being accused of being racist. So afaic it’s just become a running joke because whatever happens it’s going to be wrong

Edited

It's a running joke because it's an Irish name and the convention of having an 'i' before a vowel that has an 'i' after it is too quaint and hibernian to follow, and who cares anyway because the Irish are inferior and undeserving of respect, and the only point of noticing they have names at all is to laugh at them.

If people pull you up for being racist, don't assume it's because they find you amusing.

MorningCoffeePlease · 07/03/2026 14:49

I've found the spelling of Ruairi's name easy to remember if you just think of the middle bit being "air" and the rest hangs together from that.
(I am NOT implying any hidden meanings about the character by the way, purely a handy way of remembering an arrangement of letters).

Bruisername · 07/03/2026 14:51

Yeah I think I’m done with this thread. Very easy to throw out accusations at people that are actually pretty vile and says more about you and your assumptions.

Brefugee · 07/03/2026 14:52

but, @MorningCoffeePlease the point is that isn't how the name is spelled by some.

FatRosie · 07/03/2026 14:55

@Bruisername , it's not racism but there's a hint of xenophobia about it.
Why are people getting it wrong?
People don't get Siobhan, Niamh, Caitlin or Sean wrong (other than omitting the fada on each one), and I think that's probably because the names have become mainstream.

@CaptainMyCaptain , by name has phonemes not used in some languages too and I think my name sounds cute when they are said that way. The 'your name is silly because your language/nationality is inferior' undertone isn't there.

I'm sure nobody thinks that. See my post above about my English surname which contains sounds many languages don't use. I have never thought that anybody who has a go at spelling it is poking fun.

FatRosie · 07/03/2026 14:58

@DeanElderberry ,I'm entirely with you on this.

Brefugee · 07/03/2026 14:59

it's the chippy accusations that are annoying me.

@FatRosie i'd never get any of those names consistently right or even the same. Give it a rest will you?

I'd get Siobhan & Niamh wrong. Just as I would get names from any other nationality wrong if they didn't conform to English phonetics. people know Sean from Sean Connery, Caitlin is phonetic, though again you have to guess C or K and i or y.

If it were a real person I'd make a conscious effort to try to get it right. But for a character on radio TV where you don't see the spelling I think it matters less.

See also people mis-spelling Lynda Snell as Linda Snell.

RegimentalSturgeon · 07/03/2026 15:02

This is all very boring indeed. I did enjoy the mutation of Siobhán into ShagBandit either on the BBC board or Mustardland way back when.

FatRosie · 07/03/2026 15:17

Wasn't she Shovehorn?
I like the deliberate misspellings. Brine is a favourite but Madam got stamped out by the thread police.

I totally get that some people just struggle with spelling some words. Typos happen. It really isn't about typos or misspelling.

The issue is more to do with if we sensed that Noluthando was being misspelt out of disrespect, we'd get 'Dean and Rosie, you've got a point'.

DeanElderberry · 07/03/2026 15:26

'chippy assumptions'

Nice new spelling of croppies lie down.

DeanElderberry · 07/03/2026 15:31

People spell Lynda as Linda quite often. I've never noticed anyone calling Mrs Snell 'the unspellable one'. Because she is seen as having a valid and repectable name.

MorningCoffeePlease · 07/03/2026 15:45

Brefugee · 07/03/2026 14:52

Yes I do get that, but I was just meaning to suggest an easy way of remembering the spelling of the name for the particular character in TA whose name we are talking about on this thread.

TeenToTwenties · 07/03/2026 15:51

Anyway to get back to the plot.

If Helen is pregnant, is it Fynn's (sp), or could it be Dane's?

Will Tony give up the Angus's?

Will Stella go through with marrying Pip?

Will Chelsea be allowed her hard worked for success?

The Unsnellable One?

I'll get me coat...

FatRosie · 07/03/2026 17:01

Finlay's. it will turn out to be a spot of wind from a dodgy bit of Mankwold.
Will Tony give up the Anguses? Hope not.
Will Stella go through with marrying Pip? Not if she has any sense. If she does, could she be in a wife and step-daughter murdering SL.
Will Chelsea be allowed her hard-worked for success? - Hope so.

if only there was a Sniff emoji.

FatRosie · 07/03/2026 17:10

👃the Snell Sniff emoji?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 07/03/2026 17:35

Isn't it a Snell Snyff?

FatRosie · 07/03/2026 17:42

I've only heard it so can't help there. Smile
